    New Arrival - Accutron Spaceview

Saw one of these in a watchmakers in Clerkenwell en route from a meeting the other day. My business partner, who was with me, immediately said 'that's f***ing amazing - buy it' but at £750 it was a bit pricey for an impulse purchase.

A week later on eBay, however, and £300 seemed eminently reasonable.

I assume the one I saw in the shop was a 'better' model at a bricks & mortar premium but this one is gorgeous and absolutely immaculate. Bought from seller grassbox2020 who seems to specialise in servicing & selling these.

Not 100% on the eBay green croc deployant yet...

It's a 1971 so fairly late in their production run. Shame it wasn't a year later - I could have ticked the birth year box.

I love it for its history and the engineering (first electric watch etc.) but, like you say, it's a conversation piece too.

I really like these, nice purchase!

Are they reliable? I assume this chap can fix them etc?

Very nice and a piece of history too. Sounds like you have saved yourself some money too by getting the one from eBay. Hopefully you won't have any problems with it.

Hummers are great. There's not too many people willing to fix them, but my watchmaker contact, who has worked with them before and used to have quite a collection himself, says - basically 'don't touch them unless they go wrong'. I'm not actively looking for a spaceview to add to my collection but I would never rule it out - certainly a conversation piece and horologically interesting too.

    My two -

Pretty iconic - enjoy. Watched someone discussing these on YouTube a couple of weeks ago - just cool.

According to everything I've read they're very accurate, very simple and therefore very reliable so fingers crossed.

I don't know anything about the chap who sold it apart from his having 100% positive feedback and that he's sold quite a few of these. I'm going to message him tomorrow to say thanks so if I find anything out I'll share.

Ditto. Sometimes modern battery voltages can make them a bit twitchy(original was 1.3, now they're 1.5 volts?), but that can be sorted I gather. Very cool watches IMH and the smooth seconds hand can make a Patek look a little drunk(not always a bad thing :))and that's a beauty and alone in horology, as far as I'm aware anyway, because the oscillator directly drives the hands. Well may you wear Sir.

With these you need to be careful that what you are buying is an original Spaceview and not a conversion from a more mundane hummer. All that was needed was to remove the dial and find the correct sized marked up crystal so many were converted like that. I can't speak for the one above, it may be original or it may be not but you would do worse than look at www.electric-watches.co.uk before buying.

I did a bit of research before I bought and I think it's original. However, given the price and looking like it does I'm more than happy even if it isn't. It's the appearance and the movement that I'm after rather than perfect authenticity.

It came with a spare battery so I'll check...

With the correct crystal I don't think there is any way to tell a conversation from an original?
    Cheers..

That may be true and in which case there is no issue but a lot of the time it isnt correct and has clearly been bodged if you know what to look for. Not that I am sugggesting that about the one shown here which looks nice.
