Which country was this taken in?
UK, Hertfordshire yesterday, ta, sorry for the blur, as mentioned it was taken by the 6 year old :-)
I've asked this on a couple of places, saw fly was suggested and rejected (not by me) as not having long enough antennae, a member of the Ichneumon Fly family seems to be the best bet which is a kind of wasp as per J111dja's suggestion. Since he's unlikely to be taking this as his Mastermind specialist subject I think we can call this one solved
Ta all
The way insects are identified is fairly interesting. You answer a bunch of yes/no questions, narrowing down your field to fewer and fewer options. I have linked an online key aimed at UK insects here. https://www.amentsoc.org/insects/wha...adult-key.html
There is a pretty good photo guide for wasps here http://www.naturespot.org.uk/taxonomy/term/19396
I would guess that its one of the parasitic wasp species: Ichneumon, Stenichneumon, etc. , but its not a great photo.
Yep... it definitely looks like an insect
It's clearly a wee beastie.
A quick check on google seems to indicate it's a type of Ichneumon Parasitic Wasp but I can't tell exactly which one.
Thanks all, Ichneumon is what we went with, we've used the 'fly' description as since starting school the word wasp provokes all manner of panicky response. He was absolutely fine beforehand so he's learned it from school fellows and teaching assistants (I actually saw one of the TAs freaking out about a bee on the school field, they really shouldn't be allowed to do this sort thing around kids!). Anyway, he is happy with the information and asked me to say thank you, so, thanks again.
