As little as possible.
Hiya,
I've been admiring some of the amazing collections people have and I was just curious as to what people did for a living or what sacrifices people have made to facilitate this rather pricey hobby/obsession !
I'm a lawyer by profession and although reasonably comfortable I did forgo an exotic holiday this year to purchase my Rolex Deepsea and Cartier Ronde XL. That's the sacrifice I made and no doubt there will be many more!
As little as possible.
What is this "work" of which you speak?

Oh sorry you said FOR work not AT work...
I am an investor in watches. Haven't made a penny though
I work in IT, but I have had proper jobs.
On the dole, pay for watches with my dole cheques and sly painting and decorating jobs mate. A few wins on the Gee-gee's s as well. After I've spent on a few tins and some baccy it's off to WOS and Wempe.
Will I get in trouble for this? Oi mate it's only a bit of cash in hand son!
I am retired - from the work merrygoround - just waiting for my employer to notice.

No, really, IT

Self-employed risk control and damage limitation technician. By the way, special price for TZ-UK members - 10 grand up front (Paypal gift OK - mechanic@banque.geneve.ch) and 10 grand on completion of the assignment. No women, no kids.
Sit on my arse and drink as much tea as possible.
General loafing.
No watch discussion?
I mainly play with spreadsheets.
I'm head of biscuit design for Aldi supermarkets. It's pretty simple really - I just rip off an existing biscuit and change the name just enough to keep the lawyers at bay.

Hours are long but the money is good.
I don't have a car here.....that's one of my sacrifices. Oh, and I am still using a Samsung S4.
I do sweet FA thesedays, apart from turning coffee into piss during the day and beer into piss in the evening. Manage to fix the odd watch or two between drinking and pissing.

I'm unemployable, that's for sure.
If you genuinely did forgo an exotic holiday, then you wife / family also made a sacrifice just so you could have a watch.
If you are going to buy a big boys toy, common sense dictates that you make no sacrifice what so ever. That means you can buy it without batting an eyelid and certainly you do not get into debt or forgo a holiday or car etc.
If you have to make a sacrifice, then something, somewhere is wrong.

Mick
PS I no longer work - I spend my time touring Europe and today was spent on a Spanish beach.

If you're confused, read The Magus by John Fowler. Actually, read it anyway even if you're not confused.
