My son and I were in the usual Friday evening car park that is the M27 last evening, and there was a particularly lovely example of this in the outside lane - left-hand drive but on British plates with a J suffix. It just looked so elegant and tiny amongst the new behemoths around it - lovely slim pillars giving a 360 degree view without blind spots and no unnecessary "styling". I just had time to notice the wood-rimmed steering wheel and give the driver an approving thumbs-up before it moved away.
There was an Alfa and Lancia dealer in Winchester Road Southampton many years ago, and I always tried to have a look at the cars in the showroom. I was always attracted to the simple, elegant lines of the Alfas of the time. Equally, I was always put off by the legendary unreliability.
I suppose you could always admire the looks while waiting for the recovery service.
Somebody will be along shortly to tell us that they've covered a quarter of a million miles in one without as much as a plug change.
