To be confirmed in the next 24 hours.
Excited?
Another nail in the coffin of the English national side.....
Pleased for Sam, at least we will now have a manager with the cojones to stand up to the wet blankets/media who have picked the team for the last 20 years.
He will be a marked improvement on any manager since Venables.
My concern is they should have gone for him after the Brazil disaster.
Still, the problems with the England team go deeper than the manager!
Great.
Bungs, allegedly.
Sam Allardyce said that he had placed the matter in the hands of his lawyers. He also confessed: “As a father it is painful to watch your son talk tall and exaggerate his influence for financial gain.” On 25 September he announced that after lengthy discussions his lawyers had advised that "I have a very strong case in relation to the programme, and I am planning to sue the BBC over the false and highly damaging allegations. I have therefore instructed my lawyers to prepare my case against the BBC." Allardyce added that he would discuss the matter with Bolton chairman, Phil Gartside, as well as his wife before he took any final decision. Allardyce has not yet filed any legal action against the BBC, meaning the allegations remain legally unchallenged.
Agreed, but not getting relegated and grinding out results in tough times is something England have been sadly lacking for many years. We've won f'all in my lifetime and seeing how well pretty average groups of players who are well drilled can do in major tournaments gives me pause for thought.
Yes it's hardly inspiring but having tried the big money foreign managers and more thoughtful genteel mind of Woy Hodgson we do have to try something different.
Also I'm not too upset that Sunderland have lost their manager just at the worst time ;-)
It's all down to money apparently:
Klinsmann wanted £6 mill a year.
Steve Bruce wanted every Saturday of to go to weddings (Twitter-Steve Bruce at weddings).
Ranieri wanted licence to tinker with the team.
Big Sam wanted 18k pa, a Vauxhall cavalier (SRi of course) and unlimited pork scratchings.
It's not exactly exciting but there were worse candidates
We will go no where with big Sam. Sure heart in the right place but he's won fu.. All
Goes to show if we stick to English guys what choice do we have ?
Always been a fan of Big Sam.
However, is he the best we could get? FA by name
He's had more jobs than Mr Ben.
$h1Te choice IMO...

Allardyce, this is how low English football has sunk.
Must be true.. anounced it on his twitter feed: https://twitter.com/TheBig_Sam
Seriously can he do any worse?
Personally i I would have given Hoddle another run at.
Whoever does not know how to hit the nail on the head should be asked not to hit it at all.

I'm not so sure he'll make any difference at all. He won't go against the grain despite his image. There will just be another team structured around a big name player who is clearly overrated that will ultimately fail because it is built on a poor foundation. You only have to look at West Ham when he managed there to see this. We played some of our best football under Sam when Carrol was injured but no sooner than Carrol was pronounced fit he was back in the side, tactics reverted to dull, uninspiring football and we lost our way. It'll happen again but not in Claret and Blue. Good luck England, you'll need it!
I'm Welsh, so it's of little concern to me who manages England but play fair... it's not unreasonable to believe that Sam Allardyce has always got the best out of the talent at his disposal. Now it's true to say he's never managed a top team so had limited class players available to him, and therefore has had to formulate tactics accordingly usually adopting a direct or 'long ball' style.
We all know that in club football the prime directive of any manager is to avoid relegation and the secondary consideration is to produce attractive, quality football. Now we've seen precious little of the latter (but it's fair to say the same for Hodgson) but he has always succeeded within the limits of his playing staff and one thing you can say: he plays people in their proper position.

I wish him well, but seems like another manager at the end of his career who will achieve nothing with a team of dullards...
English football needs something radical - We've tried English managers, we've tried foreign managers - We need to try to get some decent players.
First off, I'd suggest a ban on any more than 3 foreign nationals per team on the pitch during any Premiership match, as the real problem seems to be a dearth of talent ON the pitch.

I can see the headline now ...
England select new manager - Iceland quake in boots
... or similar
FFS! The FA showing a complete and utter lack of ambition.
I agree with Mr Goat.
As long as the FA don't grind him down I think he will do OK. He definitely has a way of getting the best out of players which is just what is needed now.
Venables - an opportunity messed up by the FA, too much his own man, and possibly a bit of baggage.
Same reason they wouldn't have Clough.
Cheers,
Neil.
Pleased for him, of course, but can't help feeling a little under-whelmed. That said, I have had very low expectations in relation to the England football team (unlike our rugby and cricket teams!) so probably can't be disappointed any more than I am already.
It would be nice to think the long term health of English football could be demonstrated by Big Sam being announced as England manager on the day Pogba is signed for over 100 million. Sigh.
Listening to Talk Sport on the way home last night, they talked to Ian Hendon (ex player at Notts County) he talked at length about Allardyce and his tactical awareness and motivational skills I think he is the right appointment at this time. England are a Championship side at best at the moment, lets see what he can do!
lets get behind him i say he's always done a reasonable job with reasonable players so let's see what he can do with the so called cream of english football! some will be in for a rude awaking as most of his old players say he doesn't suffer fools gladly
Has he finally been appointed? (There must have been some hard negotiating about his chewing gum allowance).
Yep, definitely appointed!
We need better players. I'm not sure the best manager in the world could get the current lot to win anything, they're not intelligent, skillful or mentally strong enough. So, although I'm not a fan of Big Sam I do think he's probably as good as the team deserve.
Over-rated and Under-achieving. Applies to him, the England team and majority of Premier League players.
He has a track record of putting together teams comprised of relatively poor players who arguably over-perform through an effective, coherent style. Sounds like a good fit, really.
The Guardian isn't popular on here. Which means folks miss: https://www.theguardian.com/football...and-the-oscars

After so many years of mediocrity and underperforming, my overwhelming response is that I couldn't give a toss. Very sad 😟
Why all the negativity? With Phil Brown as assistant what could possibly go wrong. ...
Great. The FA have only got themselves to blame.
Sam Allardyce: England manager allegations investigated by FA
I cannot judge as I hold no evidence but it does not look good!
Irrespective of whether he is guilty of being 'bunged' on this occasion, he demonstrates appalling judgment as England Manager in allowing himself to be in this situation. NOT impressive from any perspective!
