Sitting in an AD's safe for 20 years??! Surely not?!
I recently contacted a local (to me) Authorized Rolex dealer about a 5513.
Well, he only had one ready for sale, recently serviced, it was a gloss dial from 1988, not a big fan of the gloss dial so declined it.
10 minuets later I get a call back informing me that he has found a 1978 Matt dialed 5513 right at the back of the safe..
Well that was yesterday and today I went to veiw it.
Well, I just couldn't resist -
All original (As far as I can see) too which is great, it's also never been re-finished.
It has been sitting in the safe for 20 Years, so a service it probably due, he quickly put it on the timing machine and the accuracy was very good.
He usually won't sell a watch prior to a full service, but i have brought a few Rolex's off him before, and he was kind enough to let me take the watch today, he will call me when one of his on site Rolex technicians has a free slot to service it within in a week time slot. :)
Really happy with it. :)
(Now off to a family BBQ, I will post some more pictures later this evening.)

That's a cracker. Don't suppose he charged you 1996 price?
Tasty Rols!
1978 with a metres first dial. Hmmm.
Damn that's a nice watch mate. Congrats.
I've been hunting for a '78 for ages and finally gave in a bought a BLNR . . . If you ever get bored of it just let me know!!!
Rob
I agree with Bob, that dial is not 78. You may have stumbled upon the deal of the century here - I hope you have, superb watch and if it turns out to be a genuine 60s meters first watch, God only knows what it is worth, but I suspect a damn sight more than you paid.
Well done and fingers crossed.
Hope it IS 1968.
If so, cracking deal and chuffed for you.
Wow that could be one hell of a story. Congrats on the watch regardless! I just received my first ever Rolex today so im also in a happy new watch mood. But I suspect your story will be cooler :)
Still learning on Rolex so all I can say is I love the watch truly stunning. And I hope it is the more valuable model.
So can someone explain what it means metres first dial? Why is that more valuable? Is it the age only?

Stunning Karl
I don't often get jealous on here these days but in this case I'm prepared to make an exception!
Good luck everybody. Have a good one.
You are basically right. If you look at the depth rating it is meters first then feet. This layout was only used on the earliest dials and later ones had feet first. There is also a link to the age of watch and serial number range, so if a watch is meters first you would expect it to be made in a certain year and within a certain range of serial numbers. If all these things tie up - hey presto: more valuable.
Of course condition and matching hands and the overall condition of the watch also come into play.
Great find! Happy for you Karl. I just checked the back of my safe; I found some dust :-(
Bloody lovely that!
Dial lume and hands look right for a 67 ish metres first. That's my hunch.
Man.. If an old man will ever ask me to help him clean around I'll be happy to comply especially if he's some sort of an antique dealer. Then again, anyone would probably.
Congrats to OP. This is akin to striking a lottery.
My local ADs do their stocktake every year and clean out their safes in the process, so it's never going to happen to me.
Just had a massive deja vu. I'm sure a post was put up recently exactly the same as this, with an ad funding something in the back of a safe (can't find an emoticon for scratching head)
Looks a peach Karl, will be interesting to hear how the dial/date mystery unravels
Loosks great. No doubt the forum dealers like MarcJ will jump on this once it's flipped on SC
Just home from the BBQ.
Removed the bracelet and it was grimy....
Quick wipe reveals a 7 digit reference between the lower lugs starting 155****
1966/67! :)
Are you going to tell the dealer?
Well done fella, looks like you have a nice genuine 67 metres first, well done.
Birth year alert! I'm even more jealous
Good luck everybody. Have a good one.
Amazing! Massive congrats - great find!
Thanks guys. :)
It didn't come with box or papers through... But you don't wear them. ;)
How rare/valuable are these 67 ones?
I was only kidding, the way to get an indication of pricing is have a look on Chrono 24 and that will give you an idea. The thing with vintage is its all about condition so prices can vary widely for the same model from the same year, I doubt you would get a decent example below £5k.
What a find! Jealous doesn't cover it...

marchingontogether!
Great looking 5513 wear it in best of health
Definite keeper that one imho
If he sells a '68 as a '78, don't let him anywhere near your watch with screwdrivers ;)
Love it.
Fantastic!!
^^^^I was thinking similar thoughts ;)
(also don't let him discover the serial number....)
