a precista prs10 sounds ideal, could be beyond budget though. Have a look at the timex originals.
Am looking for a watch for a 9-year old boy, something fairly cheap but decently made and waterproof enough for swimming.
- Quartz movement, non-digital
- No "Kids" or "Cartoon" designs, just something simple and rugged in design
- Water resistant enough for swimming, snorkelling
Found this, but wondering what else might be a good option...

Anything "diver"-ish would be nice.
Thanks....

Good luck everybody. Have a good one.
Got both my girls a Baby G from WatchHut sales - both have been abused but still working fine.
Here it is 4 years ago...
(she keeps her watches longer than me )
Here's a boy's equivalent...

I can recommend the Lorus. I recently bought one for on of my grandsons. It has survived being dropped, stood on, nearly eaten by the dog and is very good value for money
Thanks for that, always good to hear from someone else. If I don't find anything else I may go for that, seems quite a bargain, and Amazon UK have it in two colours for 14 quid delivered:

That said I still like the idea of a Seiko diver, as he is quite into snorkelling and diving. Does Seiko still make any cheapish quartz Ladies divers? I presume a Ladies diver would fit a boy. I did some searching and found some but all out-of-production....

If they take it off for swimming you could get cwc g10. Apart from that, I've seen some decent looking pulsars in the local jewellers window at around fifty quid, some of them might be a bit large for a nine year old though. Did you see the timex indiglo on SC for fifteen quid? Looks ideal
Good luck everybody. Have a good one.
A little off brief but I have these 2 for my boys who will be 9 and 11 shortly.
I am going to put them both on nato straps when they start wearing them

A Vostok is a cracking choice. Tough as old boots, meets the budget and is mechanical. The Amphibia would be my choice over a Komandirskie as the Amphibia has better water resistance but they're both good. Meranom.com is the place to go.

Yes, got mine from Meramon #1 son also has this....

My vote would be for a Baby-G.
Lots of features to keep children amused and fascinated, rugged, waterproof, relatively child-proof, and ultimately a very cool watch for both adults and children!

May I suggest a vintage Seiko diver?
A 6458 or 4205 for instance.

My kids have these Casio HDA-600s. 100m WR, 10-year battery, under £10.

Unless he's expressed an interest in vintage or mechanical watches I'd steer away from these - that lorus or one of the casios suggested would make far more sense I think
You can get that 'argos' diver on Amazon, in various colours including a rather natty red version for about the same money. Thinking of getting one for my youngest - I know G shocks are probably tougher but you need a basic 'hands only' analogue as your first watch IMHO
Not a diver Casio Analog Digital Illuminator Telememo:
...but it does claim 50 m WR.
i bought a vostok before, but arent they manual wind? not automatic? i picked up a momentum a cheap diver. or watch for sales from deep blue.
Pretty much grew up on analogue Lorus and ana/digi Casios, used to pop down the jewelers with my dad and raid the cheap ones every other year or so. I think spending anything more than £20 is a waste because they're kids, and they're gonna take a beating/get lost etc. Not sure if it's a present etc, but I really enjoyed just nosing at all the watches and being allowed to pick the one I liked :)
How about the trusty old Casio F-191W, digital, water resistant and can be had for about £7 on Amazon

Sorry my bad just saw it said 'no' digital

Kept meaning to start this same thread.
I need something for my 7 year old, again no digital, he needs to learn to tell the time.
I can't decide if the watch should have both hour and minute numbers of does that confuse too much and just have hours for his first.
Was pretty thrilled when my daughter said she quite fancied the idea of a watch for her b'day in a few months. Was not quite so pleased when she said she liked the blingy type Michael Kors ones.
Happily she kind of understood when i explained she could do quite a bit better than that for roughly the same money; trouble is an expert on watches i'm not, an expert on ladies/girls watches even less.
Get her the MK raise her interest in watches with what she wants then introduce other "more worthy" watches

Didn't think you were arsey - I see quite a lot of MK watches come through my office so they are pretty popular in the fashion watch sector
The gold coloured ones stand out often chronograph versions - now I wouldn't wear one personally but we are not buying for me !

Looks better not on the dreadful bracelet and to answer an earlier question- automatic.

That doesn't look too bad, but from the specs here:
http://www.casio-europe.com/euro/wat...DA-600B-1BVEF/
"Dimensions approx. 44,60mm x 41,00mm x 13,40mm (H x W x D)"
....seems quite large for a kid?

Does that fit the bill, only £14.99 rugged and diver looking with a rotating bezel (granted rotates both ways)
I have one myself for when I have to go on some of the petro chemical sites that don't allow metal strap wrist watches, it's been bashed, dinged and scratched and is 3 years old, it still works perfectly including the date function.
Try a Momentum - my daughter has a very nice white dial Momentum Mini on bracelet bought for US$105 from Amazon - 31mm case for the ladies version is good for a child - good WR and looks good.

I'm amazed nobody's recommended a sub yet.
I buy the Sekonda divers on a Velcro strap for my son. They're about £25 to £30 in most airports. Velcro strap means you can get a good fit on a slim wrist, and just cut off the excess strap. The watch is plastic body, reasonably robust, and about as much as I'd consider spending for something with an expected lifespan of 6 months to a year (losing them seems to be main cause of their needing replacement).
On offer: Timex Black Uplander Analogue Watch...while they last (cf Amazon).
Seems like a good deal.
I have two grown up children to swap for any working watch!

Faced this question with my older boy, circa 10 years old. Settled on an ICE watch for about £50, fits the brief and his friends have been happy with theirs.
First post not related to Rolex. Need to lie down.

Nice find... that's a great-looking watch. But while TKMaxx have it listed under "women's" I see most other places have it as Men's, and it says 44mm case with 22mm lugs... that seems kind of large for a kid, no? Here it is on Timex site:
