Having just paid for all new running gear for 3 garage doors that were installed by builders I am now a fan of paying a bit more to someone who can install the door so it runs smoothly and doesn't wreck the gear/actuators etc.
Hello Guys
I am having some building work at my house, and wil need new garage door (metal, side hinged, brickwork opening 248 x 2040). It is a bit of an odd size, so cheap online deals cannot be found.
Do you know of manufacturing/national companies where my builder can buy as trade? The various producers (Garador, Cardale) see to only sell through regional specialised dealers, where the price of the door goes up at leat 40%. The dealers like Howdens, Wickes, B&Q only have standard sizes.
Any advice is welcome

If its not a standard size a roller shutter might be a better bet.
I was surprised how cheap a motorised one with key fobs can be. You can get them powder coated too.
Bespoke and reasonable don't usually go hand in hand but I've used this brand twice and been happy:

They have installers across the UK and I did negotiate on price and found them to be reasonable once you've haggled.
Quality is excellent.
Just going through this process. Gone for a sectional door (that slides up and backwards over the vehicle) double skin galvanised and insulated, electric, remote etc.... The door sits inside the opening so it's easy to suite a non-standard opening like ours is. I looked at the various online deals and it was only a few hundred quid extra to get Oxley in to do the whole thing.... supply, new frame, fit, take away the old door and crap left over.
Have a chat with Mik and see if he can help you. http://www.snapes.eu/welcome.html
Thanks
the garage has to be as I said, i.e. side hinged - for reasons that are structural etc. I guess I may accept some quotes that insert a 4in architrave , covered outside by a pvc fascia.
Thansk for your suggestions

^^^ Very good advice.
My brother in law fits garage doors as his small business.
Based on the conversations I regularly have with him, I would estimate that around 50% of his work is sorting out bodged installations where DIYers/Builders have installed them themselves and got them wrong. They are not really that complicated, but conversely it is quite easy to get the installation wrong.
These are reasonably good quality:

Try JB Doors in Sheffield
I just had a motorised roller shutter door installed and would recommend highly! I went a bit overboard insisting on steel laths, but insulated aluminium ones are more than up to the job and don't need much of a running track or overly large motorised drum.
