Was instrumental in the abolition of the fixed wage for footballers.
All these millionaires who he helped make should be making some kind of charitable donation in his name.
He was always forthright but professional, no agenda's.
Like many on here I was brought up with him on the telly...
Seemed like a very nice chap too

Maybe a little hyperbole here, but the man was a legend. http://www.bbc.co.uk/guides/zqvtn39
RIP Jimmy Hill.
I remember him running the line in an Arsenal match when a linesman was injured in the early 70s.
His work at Coventry in the early 60s was phenomenal.
His innovative ideas were way ahead of the time.

Like others, I grew up with him presenting Match of the Day, puffing away on his pipe - those were the days.
Did a lot for footie at many levels - top man - RIP Jimmy.
Sing up Sky Blues - RIP Jimmy
Very sad to go that way...RIP Jimmy Hill.... the complete footballer.
Huge here in Coventry
RIP a man with opinion
He loved to wind up us Scots. RIP.
He has an innovator is so many ways; abolition of the £20 weekly wage, entertainment in football grounds, TV pundits etc.
I have amazing memories of watching him on MOTD with my Grandad.
RIP.
As a Coventry kid he was always in the news and generally for the right reasons. RIP JH.
I was watching Arsenal at Highbury as a kid with my Dad many, many years ago when the linesman injured himself. Apparently they didn't have spare officials in those days and a call went out. It was anaswered by Jimmy who came from the crowd and ran the line that afternoon and took some merciless but good natured banter in a great spirit. RIP Jim.

Vey sad. Another true icon of my childhood is gone.
Bon voyage Sir.
Loved watching Jimmy on MOTD as a kid, RIP Jimmy
Did it all.
Player, manager, chairman and the first football pundit.
Great character too.
RIP Jimmy
Cheers,
Neil.
+1....I`ll quote the old Yorkshire saying: 'if you can`t say owt nice, say nowt'. I honestly can`t understand the pleasure Howdy gets from his behaviour on this forum and the value of his presence here has to be questioned.
I have good memories of Jimmy Hill on TV and it's clear that he did a lot of good for the game. Like most of us I didn`t know him personally therefore I can`t honestly say I`m grieving in the true sense of the word, but I`m still saddened to hear of his passing. At 87 he's had a good innings and hopefully that's some consolation for his nearest and dearest.

Jimmy Hill not the best player nor Manager, pundit but a true football legend nevertheless whose legacy will live on across the football world a real "game changer" so unlike the "special one" who thankfully was shown the door by my club
I take no joy from his passing, but imo he was a nasty little Englander that had no place at the BBC. Hill and those that have followed him, the likes of Motson and Lineker are cut from the same bigoted, jingoistic and England only focused cloth, you only have to listen to the likes of the late Bill Mclaren to see how impartial and unbiased commentary should be done.
He was an extraordinary man and one to whom football owes a great debt.
RIP, Jimmy.

Ignorance breeds Fear. Fear breeds Hatred. Hatred breeds Ignorance. Break the chain.
Gents, it's the George and dragon, not the pit.
My thoughts exactly - I loved Saturday nights, stayed at my aunties with my cousin and his dad while mom and dad were down the pub. Nan used to buy us a couple of chocolate bars, crisps and pop and we'd watch Starsky and Hutch before MOTD and then I'd get picked up at throwing out time. Early 70's........
