Top 20 favourite films. Add yours:-

In no order (because it would change regularly!)

    My favourite 20:

    Raiders of the lost ark
    Star Wars (1977)
    Die Hard
    Predator
    Leon
    Shawshank redemption
    True lies
    Platoon
    Aliens
    Pulp fiction
    Back to the future
    Jaws
    Goodfellas
    Live and let die
    Blade runner
    Halloween
    ET
    Apocalypse now
    Gladiator
    Unforgiven

They are all awesome, and 16 of them are usually voted into the top 50 films of all time in most polls....

Honourable mentions above and beyond are:-

    The matrix
    Goonies
    Coming to america
    Point break
    The untouchables
    Usual suspects
    La confidential
    The departed
    Trading places
    Se7en

And "first blood" just to remind me that Stallone was once a truly great character actor.... The torment in that film is breathtaking......

Jean Renoir’s two masterpieces do as good a job as any film in cementing cinema as a serious art form:

    * ‘La Règle Du Jeu’ (The Rules of the Game) (1938)
    * ‘La Grande Illusion’ (Grand Illusion) (1937)

In addition, Elia Kazan’s 1954 masterpiece ‘On the Waterfront’ is pretty much a perfect film in my opinion (i.e. acting – script– music – cinematography).

As for British cinema, I don’t think it gets any better than Powell and Pressburger’s ‘The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp’ (1943)

I could regale you with textual analysis and historical context for these films (which is pretty interesting for all four of them), but there are plenty of internet resources out there if you fancy finding out more.

(That said, there was a thread on favourite film scenes a while back that I referenced Grand Illusion, OTWF and Blimp in should you be interested: http://forum.tz-uk.com/showthread.ph...=1#post2952802).

Cant believe this has only featured on 1 of the above lists???

It may be a case of people not having seen it great story great cast superb acting the tension and conflict between Defoe and Hackman is electrifying. If you havent seen it give it a watch.

No need to be sorry - it's a thread with lists of favourite films (i.e. those we as individuals have enjoyed the most for whatever combination of reasons) one man's meat and all that.

    Cheers

I've seen it but not in my top twenty favourites.

There are some in my list that nobody has duplicated but at the end of the day it's all personal opinion.
    Cheers,
    Neil.

I've seem Mississippi Burning - great film. But like I said in my post no one can really have a top 20 favourite films because it changes everyday.

    I didn't include
    Kes
    Battle Royale
    Magnum Force
    Yojimbo
    Ipcress File
    Get Carter
    Audition
    Au Bout de Soufflé
    Asylum
    Manhunter
    Aguirre The Wrath of God

You could just go on and on surely. I'm more amazed at some of the really mediocre stuff that has struck a cord with folk. That's the joy of cinema though, horses for courses....

I'm shocked to see a film with Danny Dyer in someone's top 20 though ;)
