I can see small specs of light in the sky at night.
Probably distant stars, and I bet they are a fair few miles away.

Surprising. I would have thought it would be under the horizon at that distance.
I can see the isle of Sheppey. I'd rather not though.
Sea level about 30 miles. Further depending on your altitude.
About 93,000,000 miles.
There is a viewing table outside Sheffield at an elevation of 360 m/1200ft. On a clear day looking east you can see Lincoln Cathedral and the Humber Bridge (43 and 52 miles). Ideal conditions don't occur too often...Autumn mornings can be ideal. From the top of Kinder Scout in the Peak (600m), people have taken pictures of Snowdon with a long lens camera, which is more than 90 miles away across the Cheshire plains.
If I climb the tree in the garden I can see the nubile 18 year old next door in the shower.
Oh, wait!
In my old office in Canary Wharf you could see the Crystal Palace transmitter, telling visiting septics that it was the Eiffel Tower never, ever got old ;)
I can see the house in front of me and the house behind me. From the front garden I can see PhilipK's blueberry tree.
"A man of little significance"
I've posted this before but I like it and it's relevant, so here goes again...
The view from Parliament Hill (Hampstead Heath). What I especially like about it is the fact that you can see the Queen Elizabeth II suspension bridge at the very far left (east) when zoomed in, which I would have never have expected. The view over central London has changed a bit (new tall buildings) since this picture was taken too.
Also, if you look very carefully, Nelson's Column is visible in this panorama.
Click on pic for full size version. Probably best to download the full size version and view it in your local image browser.
(This image was made by someone who uploaded it to Wikipedia; it is not mine)
If I can remember over the winter, I'll go up to Parliament Hill and take an up to date version of this photo.

A few years back, I attended a metro training as a part of the Dutch yacht master title.
The guy in front of the class told us that genus cumulonimbus clouds - the ones that produce thunderstorms (with the 'anvil' top) can be several miles high. In fact: when standing on the North Sea beach of Holland, looking west, you can see these clouds above Ireland! That's about 200kms west!

I can easily see various city/canary wharf buildings from my house about 20miles away.
Regularly see France when down on the coast.
Clear day = Scotland, England, Wales and Ireland for me ;)
It's just a matter of time...
Well my eyes are clearly better than most because I can actually see Paul McCartney strumming and singing that bloody awful song in the OP's pic...
I thought I was doing well to see the Isle of Wight - from Bournemouth.
On a clear NIGHT it is possible to see 2.5 million light years (Andromeda Galaxy).
That is (apparently) the furthest object (or collection of objects) visible without aid.
Cheers,
For me, Devon and Lundy...
Distance to the horizon: link.
You'll need to be pretty high up to see something at that distance, or it'll need to be pretty tall itself: link. When I'm sailing in a yacht I usually assume the horizon is about 3 nautical miles away, and that I can only expect to see the superstructure of big ships and high land beyond that.
Visibility is another matter...
Is anyone familiar with the satirical rock group 'Bad News'?
I won't quote them as that would bring down the tone, but this reminds me of one of their quotes
This was taken at our old house last year; Isle of Gigha to the left, Antrim in the middlle and Rathlin Island to the right. About 45 miles to the furthest point.
I was in Oldham the other day and could see Liverpool cathedral 53 miles away.
Sorry to be so pedantic Lammylee - it's not like me, I'm lovely really.
I used to work close to St. Readymix, and live in north Manchester, so as I was on mileage the distances are etched large on my expense account.
I live on a 1,000-foot hill in San Diego, noted on the map below by a red splotch. As you can see, the two closest islands to the west and northwest are about 85 miles away. On a clear day, I can see the entire outline of each island standing above the ocean horizon. They are even visible here at about 800 feet of elevation.
Fascinating.
I think at sea level a man standing on the shoreline can see about 2.5-3 miles. That is there his horizon would be. If the object being viewed is above sea level clearly you would be able to see it further away and the taller it was the further away you'd be able to see it. Similarly if you increase your own elevation you can see things at grater distance. Probably one reason why the crows nest was set so high up on old sailing ships.
This is what I found: first column: hight from the ground, second: how far you can see
