I cant stop buying acoustic guitars, whats wrong with me!!

Im developing a fetish for buying acoustic guitars! I love the way they look and smell!
I bought a Martin a while back with a hardshell case and I play it about once a year as Im frightened to loose the smell when you open up the case!

Does anyone have the same problem?

Not that I'd own up to but I do understand.

That smell lingers longer than you might think. The inside of my 1944 Martin still smells lovely when I take it out of its non-original case that I use everyday. I still have the original too.

My Dad has the same disease - at the moment he has about 18 acoustics of various shapes and sizes in the spare room - including a pre-war Gib$on L-00 ( I think ) plus the modern re-issue, and a 1930's Kalamazoo version of the same thing.... He's even had me off on secret missions to buy and store instruments ( usually for him to restore) while he 'negotiates' their acquisition with my poor old mother!

I have the same problem with watches, although they don't live in storage, unlike my old Hofner and early 1990s Taylor. Not that I can play though.

Sounds like perfectly reasonable behaviour to me... I'd certainly have a vintage Bass problem if it weren't for watches! I am on the lookout for a nice pre Ernie Ball Stingray, if only I can put the money aside from the watch fund.

    Cheers,

    Rob

Perfectly normal and not a problem if you can afford it.

    They do smell lovely.

I'm mainly an electric bod but let's be honest you get so much more satisfaction and enjoyment from a well crafted instrument you can play rather than looking at yet another silly old watch on your wrist.
    Cheers,
    Neil.

It's called GAS. Common problem, easily solved by telling yourself the next purchase is going to be the last guitar you buy........honestly, I can stop any time I like.

I have managed to cut back to 2 electrics (1 Tele, 1 Strat) and one acoustic - will be getting a Les Paul for my 40th next year though

Of course, this thread is useless without pictures.

I've recently started to appreciate acoustics more than i have before (still love my electrics) but since i've been promoting acoustric artists, i have had the opportunity to play very nice guitars owned by world class players. Last week i played Thomas Leeb's personal Lowden. Bless him, he was very polite and i could'nt work out why i sounded like a four year old with a plastic toy until i realised it was tuned to DADGAD!

I know what you mean by the smell. The aroma coming from my Martin D-15 is intoxicating in it's depth and subtlety; a bit like the sound. All solid mahogany with cedar bracing (i think), it's a pity i have to sell it but i need one with a smaller body. If anyone wants to trade a 000 or 00 for it, i'd be up for that. It's a bit expensive to hang from the wall as an air freshener!

My Martin still has that smell after 24 years:

    Yes, I understand the sickness.

Had to sell my Eric Clapton Martin; still crying - stunningly beautiful guitar. Now using an Ovation Adamas, which is great, but smells of plastic...

That's because they are mainly plastic as you know.

I have owned this Ovation Celebrity Deluxe for over twenty years and have played it about six times.

I really must try to trade it.

    One day......

    Cheers,
    Neil.

My Taylor 614 is a bit of an air freshener, I should play it or sell it, funny when I bought it I just had to have it, now it hardly ever gets picked up.

Been there, done that. Desperately wanted a PRS. Picked out a beauty in store but it never really grabbed my attention when I got it home and finally got rid in favour of an MIJ Strat.

My Simon & Patrick has that gorgeous smell to it too!

It's heavenly when I open the case, probably like catnip to moggies

Strangely, none of the others have that smell

    Cheers, John

I'm so glad i'm not the only one smelling my guitars. I thought I was weird. I love the smell of my Martin.

I've got 3 electrics and 3 acoustics at the moment but I could certainly see another fitting in nicely should the right one come along. They look great on the wall which is probably just as well considering how bad my playing is.

I have, among others, a 1972 Felix Manzanero Peg head Flamenco guitar in Cypress and Ceader. I used it for some session recording in the mid 70's . It had been in storage till last year when I decided to have it restored.
Now when I open the case it has such an intense and evocative smell. It takes me right back to those days. Good memories.

    :-)

Madness I tell you. In my defence most of those get used regularly and sod's law dictates that if I sold one that doesn't get used often there'll be a phone call tomorrow for a well paid gig which I'd have to turn down ;-)

Yep, I'm fortunate enough to own a great 88 'Ray, probably as good as a pre-Ernie, maybes better with a 4 bolt neck plate, mutes etc. Oh and pornographic neck flame...

I don't keep my guitars in their cases now, use a rack, but my old Takamine vintage cedar doofer still has it big time...
