    Oris? Any love?

I've seen and tried on a few Oris, especially the Aquis and Titan chono diver fairly recently.

I must say that I found the general build quality and fit to be excellent.
Despite the Titan chrono diver being 44mm it wore more like a 40-42mm even on my 6.75" wrist.
The Aquis was 43mm yet seemed to wear slightly larger although it does have a less rounded case and the lugs seemed slightly longer and did not seem to curve in as much as the more traditional "cushion" case of the 44mm Titan chrono diver.
Even so it still wore very nicely even on old girly wrists here :)
Here are links to the Oris site showing examples...

    http://www.oris.ch/collections/collecti ... odelid=415

    http://www.oris.ch/collections/collecti ... modelid=36

    http://www.oris.ch/collections/collecti ... odelid=274

So it has triggered me to ask a few questions here of anyone more knowledgable on Oris than I (which means pretty much everyone I'd think!)

1/ How do they compare with regard to build quality, reliability etc vs the usual suspects i.e. Omega, Rolex. Tag, Breitling and even Sinn etc...

2/ I assume residuals are low so I'd take a shafting on re-sale?

3/ Movements? It seems some use Selitas SW200-1, some use the 7750 and some use an ETA?
Either way how do they typically perform? How (if at all) are they modified?
They are not AFAIK COSC certified but then again niether is my Sinn 556 but it still performs at a steady +4 per day on average.
I am used to COSC rated watches such as Rolex, Omega, Breitling etc so would find a huge gain or loss each day unacceptable.
My Sinn was a gamble but it paid off.

4/ Generally, any love for them? Do we hate them? Either way why?

5/ Any Oris owners have pics? In particular divers as that is the way I'd possibly go.

    Cheers

    Neil.

    Re: Oris? Any love?

Hi Neil. I had one with selita movement. Kept excellent time, fitted well on wrist with its bracelet but you are limited to OE rubber or bracelet due to small 16mm lugs. Over all it was an excellent watch, good lume but not as good as seamaster. Oh, and one more thing if you scratch the bezel insert you have to send to Oris for a whole new bezel and insert as it's part of the case. No simple swappping out of inserts. Other than that a great watch for the money. Regards. Kev

    Re: Oris? Any love?

OK so not a diver, but I have had this Oris Miles Tonneau for 8 years:

I love the looks (shades of Frank Muller in the tonneau case / dial design) but have only worn it sparingly over the years. In fact, my wife now wears it regularly and I can't remember that last time I wore it anywhere!

Build quality is good - certainly up there with Tag etc. The case is beautifully finished and it keeps good time. I have not worn it enough recently to have tested the accuracy.

Residuals seem to be fairly low. I bought mine in Singapore and on a good day I might get back what I paid (it was less than the UK list at the time) but on the whole a I suspect a used (couple of year old) UK-sourced Oris is likely to go for about 40% of list.

The movement is an ETA 2836-2 with day and date complications, and fitted with a signed Oris rotor.

I do genuinely respect Oris watches. They have always been a great balance between quality and price with some lovely designs. I did contemplate an Oris Diver a few years back but ended up opting for a Glycine (another underrated brand IMO) Lagunare 300.

    Re: Oris? Any love?

I have two Oris, a Divers Titan Chrono (44mm) with a Val 7750, and a BC4 Flight Timer with a ETA 2836-2. Have had both for a while now and they are permanent in the collection. I think the quality is superb, and the detail is very impressive with some interesting innovations (especially on the Flight Timer, which is a flagship of the range). The Titan on bracelet is the most comfortable watch I've ever tried. The combination of the shape and size, as well as lightness and warmth of titanium, make it very easy to wear.

The timekeeping has been within COSC for both of them when I timed while wearing them, but I didn't do it scientifically in different positions, etc.

Great watches, hugely undervalued second hand so a great buy.

Quality-wise, they are fine. Above the Oris price point you are largely just paying for the name in my opinion.

The Selita is every bit the equal of the ETA movement.

I have had several and still have two. A 1990s rectangular and a late 2000s TT Diver.

    Re: Oris? Any love?

Great watches, build quality is very good, residuals aren't brilliant. Generally speaking, I'm a fan. Probably not as nicely built as an Omega, but not that far behind (and not as far as the price distance suggests).

I've only got one at the moment (a Miles Tonneau just like one earlier in this thread), but I've had several others over the last couple of years. The chronos I always found to be very accurate, but I've typically found that with most 7750 based watches. I had a Sellita movement diver and from memory it was very accurate, and they do wear well on a smaller wrist (and not as big as the dimensions suggest).

Other than the red rotor, they don't really do anything to the movements, apart from the worldtimers, which are pretty extensively modified.

As per all of the above, they used to be more keenly priced but repositioning and general price rices have seen them creep up, that said, used prices have increased as well. I buy almost all of mine used so I keep a pretty close eye on such things. I have found their size increases to be a little annoying recently, I too have smallish wrists, and one of the things I liked about the original TT1 cases was their barrel shape making them wear a little smaller. haven't got any of the new divers but here's a couple of older models

    Re: Oris? Any love?

Oris, one of the pioneer and well known brand that make good pilot watch. I am a fan of Oris, I have at least 8 of them, of which 5 are Big Crown, and one diver, and I am still on the lookout for at least one more diver. The build quality is very good and it keep good time. The movements, if I am not wrong are modified from ETA movement. Personally, I feel it is better than Tag which I have two of them.
May be this is the trend, it seem like the OD of the case is getting bigger, particularly the diver, fortunately, most of it if not all divers are using titanium, at least you don't feel much weight on your wrist.
Frankly, it is undervalued brand. If you are looking for quality watch with reasonable price tag, Oris is one of the good choice.

Lovely, I keep meaning to pick up one of those black ink dial divers but every time one crops up on here I'm low on funds, same for that lovely vintage Chronoris which was up for sale the other day

I think they're like Fortis and Longines - they offer a good quality, reasonably priced alternative to the usual brands.

    Re: Oris? Any love?

I have the 44mm TT1 Meistertaucher which wears fantastically well for its size on my 6.5" wrists again due to the case/ lug design.

Paid what I thought was a decent price here on the SC aware it was in need of a new bezel and crystal but on receipt found it needed much much more and was running slow. Been with Oris UK service centre for a good few weeks now (hence lack of pics) and needless to say it is going to cost me far more than what I expected/ wanted to pay but on its return it should be as good as new.

Off the top of my head I can't remember exactly but small by today's standards, about 40mm without crown, I'll check when I get home. Long out of production and becoming sought after although not quite as much as the person selling one on the 'bay from Japan thinks, he's asking over £1000  http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Auth-Mens-...item4ab608f1d9

No problem, I see my guess of 40mm was pretty accurate :)

I like them & like many respondents posted here - have more than one...

Maybe the fact that people have more than one shows that they are decent quality ?
If they weren't up to much, surely you wouldn't get another ?

Had a BC3+ and a modded Classic XL, as below.
Still have the bottom one and would buy another Oris in a flash.
Not keen on the latest huge ones though.

Love Oris, founded in 1904, the same year as my football team!. My wife bought his for as a wedding day present 8 years ago. It came on a steel bracelet which I still have somewhere! But had this leather strap made a while ago. Great watches, this is the titanium cased version, very light.

Great watches & this has been reflected in the price rises of recent years, I guess. A 'COSC' certified Oris chronometer was my first forum purchase!

My favourite has to be the BC3 day-date - the clearest dial ever, in my opinion.

There's a lot of love for Oris on this forum. It's a small independent company and good luck to them.

Not that I am sending you away but did you know there is a dedicated Oris forum?
