    Tell it like it is....

I've just been listening to a press conference regarding the murder of 4 people yesterday in the UK. The (alleged) murderer surrendered himself to his local police station.

A high ranking police spokesman (a superintendent) said.....

'... the bag contained what appeared to be a silenced handgun'

OK, I wonder what else it could have been?? a spanner perhaps, or a multi tool??

I wonder if he realised just how stupid it made him sound!!

Since handguns are illegal, I think it's unfair to expect a high ranking policeman to know what one looks like, let alone use the correct term to describe it. Assuming it wasn't a spanner or a multi-tool, it could possibly be a handgun fitted with a sound suppressor or indeed a true silenced handgun like a Welrod, although they are extremely rare.
Obviously his desire to get before the cameras resulted in a very sloppy performance. Understandable in a tabloid journalist maybe, but inexcusable in a police officer.
    Regards, Jon.

or maybe he was just an inarticulate pleb, surprisingly for a senior police officer

There is a curious phenomenom that occurs when people speak in public, they become strangely verbose and circumspect in their phrasing. I suspect that this is an example of that.

Modern man is constantly faced with the risk of being recorded and held accountable for even the slightest slip of the tounge. I believe this plays a major part in this development

    Cheers,
