In a spare moment, I was looking for a few bits of info I'd forgotten or lost about the great man and found this article from the Independent. It's based on an interview conducted just before his CBE was awarded.

Excellent article, thanks.
He's a crusty old soandso, but I like his final word:
"It's an art form in itself," he insists. "When you consider the mechanical watch, it has historic, intellectual, technical, aesthetic, amusing and useful qualities. That is a lot to find in a small package."
Gray
Sort of comes across as a dried out old prune though IMO...
Disowned his daughter (whilst admitting he was absent for much of her upbringing)
Collects vintage cars but says you are silly buying a vintage watch when you can get a new one cheaper
Admits to being greatest living horologist?!?!
Reading this I was reminded of Peter Sellers.... a genius in one area but a bit of a dick otherwise...
this is just how it seemed to me.
I agree, humility goes a long way.Originally Posted by Beau

I didn't think of his statements as arrogant at all, he sounds like a real character.
Great man, thanks for sharing. Thoroughly enjoyed that.

Just my humble opinion.
Thanks for that an interesting article, especially his remarks in the final paragraph about the future. He predicts "a new phase of electronics" for watchmaking, with pieces "telling you everything you want to know, including your grandmother's birthday" flooding the mass market.

superb, thanks for sharing.
As an Omega guy, he for sure is one of my heroes. But maybe not so much on the private front....
Anyway, thanks for sharing :-)
