Dont like the GMT very much so thats a no go, and i dont like the cyclops on the sub so my vote goes to the SD.
If it had been fx a 14060(M) then it would have been harder to choose between the Sub and the SD :)
Hi guys,
I need your advice.
I’m planning to buy a Rolex; however, I have a difficult time deciding which model to get. I have narrowed it down to three: Deep Sea (116660), GMT II-c (116710LN) and Submariner (116610LN). I like all watches, but have some concerns.
Currently I’m wearing a 45.5 mm Planet Ocean (selling it to finance the Rolex), and I like big watches (hence love the size of the Deep Sea), so I’m concerned about the smaller size of the GMT II-c and Submariner. Perhaps I should add that I’m 6 feet 3 inches and weight 234 lbs. (all muscles :). As stated I lean towards the Deep Sea, but I’m very worried about its height. I have tried it on two times, and both times I concluded that I was too high, but now sitting at home, I have my doubts.
Does the GMT II-c and Submariner wear the same size?
I don’t really care about the ‘special’ features (waterproof to 1.000/12.000 feet or second time zone), and I don’t like the Cyclops eye, however, I don’t see it as a deal breaker.
I have read much positive about high quality and usage of the glidelock clasp on the Deep Sea --- does the GMT II-c and Submariner have the same clasp?
Is the bezel equally good on the three watches?
If you have experiences with these watches, please share pros and cons.
Thanks.

SubC.
I've had somewhere around 250 watches in my time, this is the one I will never sell. Perfection :)
My choice would be the Sub :)
When you look long into an abyss, the abyss looks long into you.........
Having owned both a GMT and a Sub I would always go for the Sub. Cant ever remember using the 24hr hand in anger , just an added complication. As for the cyclops thats down to personal choice.
Good luck with your quest
Alan
Deep Sea for me - I just like the Sea-dweller range - I;ve liked every model they have ever made.
It's just a matter of time...
I have tried the 14060m, but find it too small. Unfortunately.
Why would you choose the sub over the gmt? Are there other differences than the 24h hand and 1.000 feet waterproof?
I'm 6' 7" and 230lbs and the deepsea would be my choice (well actually it is my choice - wearing one right now) and you've got the frame and wrist size to carry it off nicely.
Forget about the height, it's a few mm more than any other dive watch and unless you walk around with your arms swinging about cowboy style then it's not a problem
I'd advise to give DS one more try may be side by side with SubC.. My personal choice would be GMTIIC but it is only because I want to add GMT watch to my collection and GMTIIC ticks all the boxes.. well so does 16710, 16750, 1.. :blackeye:
Fas est ab hoste doceri
My choice would be sticking with the PO. :) I tried on the DSSD before purchasing my PO, but just don't like how it wears on my wrist.
Out of the options available, I'd go for the GMT. A vanilla SD would be even better.
DSSD head and shoulders above anything else out there 8)
Personally - I use the second TZ a lot as I work for multi-national - GMTIIC gets my vote.. DSSD probably too bulky for me - If you aren't concerned about complications then get the new Sub. But it sounds like you have your eye set on the DSSD ;-)
I believe the case size of the GMTIIC and new Sub are the same - the clasp on the DSSD as similar on the new Sub, the GMTIIC has a different clasp - but still v good.
“ Ford... you're turning into a penguin. Stop it.” HHGTTG
GMTIIC for me, I find the GMT complication highly useful.
Was thinking about this the other day, can anyone confirm/deny that the cases are the same for these models?Originally Posted by MartynJC (UK)
If not, what are the differences.
Per previous posts, I'm not a fan of the deepsea.
I love my GMT, but it's a Pepsi. The new ones aren't
So by default........Sub for me
( but if it were me , I'd buy a N.O.S / B.N.I.B. 16600)

GOT...TO...KILL...CAPTAIN STUPID!
I was in a similar situation a while ago.
Having to choose between the DSSD, the Sub and the GMT. Having tried them all on, the GMT was immediately disqualified.
Now, I also wear a 45.5 PO, so the Rolexes took a little getting used to.
What you must remember is that the DSSD is the Subs older brother. It's big, but so are my arms, so it looks fine.
I chose to purchase the Sub. It's classy, elegant, has the glide clasp, and feels so right.
Now I have a big watch, the PO, and a decent Rolex, the Sub.
All the best in your decision.
If you don't desire any of them enough to know that they're the one for you I'd keep your cash in your pocket until you find a watch you're sure about.
I voted GMT. I own a P.O. and the DeepSea made it look puny - and not in a good way!
I also own a GMT, hence my preference 8)
DSSD for me, it's in a different league (IMO) especially if you like its heft. I find the others tiny by comparison. I love mine 8)
Sub c lv if it were me. If it has to be black then go for the gmt.
I voted deep sea, only because I saw one in the flesh recently and it blew me away.
I'd go with the Deep Sea of those 3.
Actually, I'd probably go for a regular Sea Dweller 16600 if it were me, as I'd prefer the smaller watch.
I'm about the same stats as you, also a PO wearer and have looked at these Rolex options. For me the DSSD would be the only choice purely based on size (in proportion to the rest of you), the others are going to look pretty small in my opinion. I’ve tried a DSSD on a couple of times and it is without a doubt my favourite Rolex and the only one I would consider buying, but... I would also say that although it is much thicker than the PO I still think the Omega has equal wrist presence with the extra couple of mm in the case size. If you are dead set on going down the Rolex route then go for the DSSD but I would give it careful consideration when you are the sort of person who can do the larger PO justice.
I like you have a PO and tried both a deepsea and a sub LVc
I found the deepsea just too thick, i much preferred the sub c
I thought the deepsea would be around the same thickness as a PO chrono, but it felt a lot thicker
I read somewhere that the only true way to see if you can live with a deepsea is to have the bracelet correctly sized before you try it on, AD are usually unwilling to remove links from brand new watches covered in plastic
GMT llc
Because:
Versatile with GMT function
Beautiful
Enough water resident....
DSSD for me presence and just that bit different for a Rolex.
SubC out of those 3, but if I could choose I would get Sea Dweller 16600.
DSSD is just massive, but not in a cool PloProf way...
I guess for size of your wrist it might look ok (if it's 8 inch+)
+1, you should wait until one of them really "calls" you ;)Originally Posted by Tony
For me it would be a no brainer, i just love the DS and if money was no object i would definitely own one
Another vote for the DSSD. Having gotten used to my Panerai, I tried on a couple of other Rolex watches and they were just too small. Since you are a big guy and used to big watches, I think you are going to find the others too small.
You're right, the DSSD is thick and heavy, but I find it very comfortable. The glide lock bracelet enables you to get a precise fit, which I've always found to be the key to wearing a watch comfortably.
At the end of the day, I don't think either of the other two watches are going to scratch your itch, and you're going to eventually end up with a DSSD anyway. Might as well get it before Rolex implements a couple of more price increases.
Was in the AD 2 weeks ago with a mate who was buying and asked myself the same question. If I had an open chequebook I'd have the DSSD (but I wish it came on a bigger strap) If i was spending my money it would be the GMT as it just looks perfect and has something over the sub. My mate wanted the best investment.. so bought the sub!
Why do you think the sub will be a better investment than the GMT?
I thought I preferred the sub but after wearing a Breitling BO1 and a Hublot Ice Bang and other 43mm+ watches I found it too small and too shallow, and so I went for the DSSD.
Little comparison with the wifes 14060M
I think the Sub (40mm) looks femalish on my quite big wrists. I only wear 42mm+ pieces ..
Based on your description I would go for the Deep Sea... BUT...
I was also in this situation before, checking the Deep Sea, GMT IIc and Sub ceramic. Deep Sea is too big for my wrists (6"), so it was a choice between GMT and a Sub.
I like the feature of the GMT since I travel a lot in different timezones, but every time I look at the Sub it just sings to me.
So my advice, if you think that the Deep Sea is too thick for you then look for another watch that sings to you 8)
i voted deepsea, but would vote sea dweller (pre-DS). i find DS to be a bit oversized..
I really feel sorry for all you big-wristed folks who have to go for 45mm POs and Rolex DSSDs...thank got I`m a skinny guy who can get by with a 40mm Sub.....plus a 36mm Datejust....and an Explorer 1......not to mention a few 34mm vintage Omegas :)
If the OP can`t make his mind up, is he REALLY going to base his decision on this poll.....I think not.
My advice is to keep trying all three until he makes up his mind.

Big lad = big watch = DSSD :D
I went by the local Rolex AD yesterday and tried on some watches to help me decide...
Tried on a PAM 328 and loved it
I also compared the size of the DS with my PO
^^^ Any preference yet?
DSSD for me, in fact got my new DSSD arriving on Thursday
GMT, bezel too cluttered. Not a fan of the green 24hr hand and dial writing.
SubC, still not used to the lugs
DSSD, everything is in proportion and while it's completely overspecced, it's a cool and great looking watch :D 8)
Here is a comparison shot...
Well, bearing in mind your magnificent physique, it seems to me your best choice would be the DSSD. Clearly size won't be an issue for you.
I'm less inclined to suggest either of the others as I'm not a fan of the case shape so that alone means I don't regard them as natural choices for a sports Rolex. That said, if you travel a lot the GMT is actually really useful/functional.
As someone said earlier, big man, big watch. I'm not as large but personally would be going for the DSSD, it is a class watch, period.
In regard to Rolex then the Deep Sea is the only option for me. An amazing, masculine watch that suits me IMO :)Originally Posted by Womble
But now I also got a thing for the pam328 :)
Forget all about the Panerai... ugly looking thing :wink:Originally Posted by KeWa
I would have the Pammy 328 in a heartbeat over a DSSD, however common as they may be there is just something about a Rolex sub that just sings to me plus much as i like the aesthetics of the GMT i doubt i'd use the TZ function much so wouldn't be my only Rolex. I'm not convinced about the new version yet so i went vintage & bought a matt dial version which works for me. There is no doubting that the sub, new or old is an extremely versatile watch (much more so than the DSSD IMHO) & suitable for any occasion as it will also fit under a suit, arguably all the watch you'll ever need. I also usually wear much larger watches being over 6" & 16 stone & was a little concerned with the sub only being 40mm (my smallest watch previously was my Speedy Pro at 42mm) but once on the wrist it wasn't an issue & was so comfortable it just felt right straight away. All three are excellent choices so you can't lose whichever you decide.
