Great link, thanks.
Great link, thanks.
That was really cool. Incredible resolution etc. Lot's of switches on the ceiling. Cheers Tom!
Brilliant.
Is it my eyes or are the 6 computer info displays (the ones that aren't just green text) stuck on paper printouts?
I'm assuming they did this to give a better idea of what you would see in flight?
W.
just fantastic
How do they access the rest of the shuttle? there's no door?
I "think" the floor behind the two seats is a false floor and you access the rest through there.Originally Posted by vRSG60
Watched one of the numerous shuttle programs that have been on and saw someone standing below what he said was the flight deck above him.
Yeah there you go

I have had the good fortune to visit NASA on two occasions, once in 1978 in the days of Skylab and again more recently in 2005 where i got to see the interior of the shuttle and of the lunar lander, absolutely amazing. Highly recommended to anybody having the good fortune to go to Houston.
Brilliant link, thanks!
What an incredible, beautiful machine.
That's the sort of thing I see in an 'anxiety dream' Wake up in the hot seat, look around and arrrrgggggg!!

I spotted what looks to be the two entry points to the flight deck. I had to look at it twice but there is one behind each of the seats.Originally Posted by vRSG60
OP: Thanks for putting up the link. The lads in work are amazed. We're used to seeing airbus fligh decks in my place.
amazing, have spent a little too long looking at this today!!!

Designed by Amercians, and theres no cupholders?? :?

I always thought there was more room between the pilot's and co-pilot's seats and the back of the flight deck.
Could someone enlinghten me....if the commanders seat is the left hand one, & the pilots seat the right hand, does the pilot land the shuttle after re-entry, or is it the commander or both. Er, if you see what I mean.
I thrilled at being in the cockpit of Concorde, but that must be the ultimate pilots 'office'.
just think - all that technology powered by a Dell laptop!!!
Fantastic! But hang on. When I play on my playstation or wii, I can fly anything with just a handful of buttons! Why do they need all those buttons and switches! 8)
amazing - despite all those switches don't ( didn't)they land that thing without engines!.
Interestingly enough, the Shuttle's flight control system was based on twin IBM System/360 mainframes (or at least computers derived from them).Originally Posted by shinzomaeda
Is this the actual Discovery flight deck or the full sized simulator?
Can't seem to find the clock .............
Cool 8)
Where do you put your coffee cup?
Respect the past, live the present, protect the future
holy smokes, wow!
I wonder just how much of that can be condensed down given today's technology.
fantastic! :D
Thanks for the link!
Great link.
What the co-pilot doesn't get a cushion!?
