Ah the Maxi-Cosi, our choice too. That makes it two little ones in MC seats inside fast Scoobies. Nice.Originally Posted by Jonmurgie

Having just spent an arm and a leg on a service and some new tyres for a completely OTT car that I barely do any mileage in, I wish I could trade down to something a damned sight more sensible :(
Thinking back, the best practical car I ever owned was a 2.0 Mondeo estate.
Peter, do you enjoy it when you drive it?Originally Posted by PeterM

I had a classic that I rarely drove but that always seemed to cost me money. The idea of it was better than the reality and even driving it lost almost all the appeal. I ended up selling it but it took me too long to do so. I replaced it with something that I drive seldom but when I do, it makes me smile from ear to ear and any time I have to spend money on it, I simply don't mind. :)
TBH Simon, the love of driving a nice car disappeared years ago. Not sure if it's age, apathy, the stupid laws, cameras or the general ill-will that faces motorists and driving enthusiasts nowadays...
IMO driving in this country is rarely a treat. The roads are poor, the rigid enforcement of ill-conceived legislation is ridiculous and there seems to be a majority of road users that are very poor drivers indeed. Perhaps I should jump back on 2 wheels to get a kick, but after 20 years I doubt that would be a good idea :?
As for my car - it's just never met my expectations (which is pretty sad) and there aren't really any other cars that I think would honestly put a smile on my face. Going back down to a Mondeo would not bother me in the slightest. The trouble is that, in this economy, selling it would only result in losing an awful lot of money.
Maybe I'm just going through one of those phases like some do with watches - you look at what you have and how much you have spent, but just don't feel anything. It's probably just the weather and being hit with a monumental bill has made me grumpy.
I'll probably perk up when the sun comes out :sunny:
I have a 09 plate Audi A6 in black. Lovely car to be in but undoubtedly the colour is a nightmare.
Peter, I can understand where you are coming from and have been there myself. As you state, the roads in the UK, scameras, and a load of other factors tend to take the joy out of driving. Track days are the best ways to get the need for speed fix but on road, I found that cars with bags of personality, that you don't have to drive fast to enjoy are the way I can still get pleasure from driving.Originally Posted by PeterM
Once the black cloud of the bill dissipates and the weather improves, with some luck you'll get your petrol-mojo back :D

I haven't really enjoyed driving since I had to give up my VW Thing. A few years after that, I just gave up driving altogether. That was about 19 years ago. Sometimes I think it would be convenient to have a station wagon, but I get by.Originally Posted by AM94

PS I am astonished. I see on eBay that the Thing can go for more than 10 000 USDs. I paid 400 USDs for mine. (It only lasted 5 years. Massachusetts winters are hard on car bodies.)

There is a lot of what you've said that I can emphasise with. In addition I've found that so many modern cars are simply boring, I feel more and more like a passenger in them whilst driving, that I'm having less and less input and so my involvement is lessened. Hence my preference of motorbikes for transport.Originally Posted by PeterM
But a restoration of my driving enjoyment has arrived in the form of a TVR: just about everything a modern car isn't! You have a constant involvement when driving her, feedback through the steering, through the seat, through your ears,.... in fact it is the closest I've come to having a two-wheel experience on four wheels. Sun out or not, it works for me.

Believe it or not, the Lupo GTI is much rarer :P
I've also lost my car mojo at the moment - I used to be a real obsessive. I guess life gets in the way sometimes. I run a BMW 635d day to day and bought an MX5 last November for track days. The BMW has done 7k miles in 15 months (almost all commuting across town each day for work) and the MX5 has done a single track day back in February. I've also got an old CRV and I'm now thinking of chopping all three in for one practical car. I guess its a lot easier for me to enjoy watches day to day than cars for me.Originally Posted by AM94
I would highly recommend a classic car to take care of the obsessiveness (or lead to bankruptcy, whichever...). There is always something to do, something to fix or improve. At 60 they feel like you're going a 100. They sound gorgeous. And they open doors to clubs and events which can become a really fun lifestyle to contrast the mundane everyday life. With my Lotus in the garage I couldn't care less what I drive as a daily mule. No modern sports car can be used properly on the public roads, so seeing supercars out an about just makes me feel that they were a huge waste of potential stuck at the same speeds as my Lupo... Plus classics and watches seem to go hand in hand. Most classic car magazines talk a lot about watches too.
A '74 MG Midget or a '71 Land Rover - both have cost unreasonable amounts to sort out - but I wouldn't part with the
The Midget my be in line for an engine tweek
There is an element of truth in this but you can still wring the neck of any car, usually cross country, and mostly at night :)Originally Posted by adigra

2002 TVR Tuscan 4.3 RR (my baby lives in the garage and only comes out in the dry)
2003 Audi A4 3.2 V6 Sline cabriolet (everyday car)
1971 Ex MOD Land Rover Series 2 88" with 3.9 V8 (used only for offroading/green laning)
1987 VW Golf Gti 2.1 (my first car which im planning to restore)
I dont think greenpeace would be a big fan of my driveway! Im a bit of a car nut and have owned over 80 cars since passing my test 5 years ago. Im planning on getting rid of the Audi soon for something more interesting though.

Nice Tuscan BTW. There's one lurking in Sheffield that's all black - black wheels, black windows etc... looked mean when I saw it! I'm currently looking for a Cerb, was going to go for a Speed 6 variant but the more I think about it the more I want the full fat 4.5 AJPV8. Bit more saving to do methinks!
I was at a TVR specialists yesterday and tbh your combo looks quite muted compared to some they had there!!!!!!!Originally Posted by simonj

The red suits it quite well! The Cerb i was the interior was purple and yellow which is half what i was expecting yours to be thank god its not!!
Im trying to talk my dad into a Cerb at the minute he only likes them with the Tuscan headlights though.
Ha, no but I do have nice 'TVR Purple' rocker covers though! :) (Yes, yes, I have a small penis and bought the 500!)
A Cerb to me has to have the original single lights, but with the later rear lights and Tuscan seats. Having said that, if a solid car came up but had the Tuscan lights it wouldn't put me off. It's all about the chassis!
Sorry, is this TVR you're talking about? :wink:Originally Posted by simonj

Some of you may remember that I had a Mustang for sale on here a while back. Well, here's the sad tale of what's happened to it since I sold it. The new owner wrote it off after four weeks of ownership. This led to the poor old Mussie ending it's life in a most undignified manor - the Top Gear boys got hold of it for their live MPH show  Maybe they saw my name, Ben Collins, on the log book and thought they were punishing the former Stig :D
This was the car just before I sold it....
This was the car just after I'd sold it....
This was the car a few weeks ago after Top Gear purchased it from the breakers yard. It was only beyond economical repair so could have been put back on the road :(
Ben, a great car turned into a POS by Top Gits - I don't even want to ask what the point of the TG challenge was?! :(
What a sad end, it should have had decades of muscle car shows ahead of it :(
"I looked with pity not untinged with scorn upon these trivial-minded passers-by"
I saw it at the live show in Birmingham last saturday....wasn't even that entertaining, just ripping around on stage behind some badly modded jap motors and an f430 from memory :(Originally Posted by AM94

Yeah, I don't think there is a point to it at all. They could have done the same thing with the car patched up and looking OK. A relatively cheap way for them to get a 500bhp car, but I don't see the point of the crazy bodywork :?:
I remain philosophical about the whole thing really. When you sell a car you've lavished attention on, you'd like to think that the new owner look after it well. But it's no longer yours so they can drive it off a cliff if they see fit. To be fair to the guy who bought it from me, he was absolutely gutted when he crashed and went out and bought a new one straight away.
And that's the one saving grace for TG. They haven't trashed a '68 GT500 which are becoming ever more rare. If I wanted to I could go and buy a new Mustang tomorrow and make the same mods that I did previously.
Still, it's a shame as it'll probably end up in yard somewhere with the other TG project cars, when it could be enjoyed by an enthusiast. It was bloody quick and sounded fantastic 8)
Boring Citroen Xsara Picasso when in family mode, no pics - as previous have suggested why would i?!
When in fun mode, this
Not getting as much enjoyment out of it as i did 18 months ago when new (to me) due to time pressures, British roads etc.
Recent Euro trip with friends somewhat renewed reasons for buying it, although autobahns have their own traffic issues.
When suggesting to wife that the watch i really want will cost £XXXX she has issued the missive that i can have it if i sell the car, bizarrely i am thinking about that........ (i know, MAN UP)
B5 Audi S4 Avant......pretty bored of it at the moment. Its nippy but dull.....
