Sharing this update from Seiko Japan's Line channel
The conversation was between Shigatsu Tsuitachi, Senior Manager of Seiko Product Strategy and Maguro Tomayo, VP of Seiko Marketing. Translation is my own so forgive some summarizing. I got the screenshot though.
MT This is the first time you have collaborated with another watch brand, is that correct?
ST Yes, this time we have worked with Steeldive on one of our most iconic models
MT Can we see it? Is it too early?
ST We can show it now
MT Superb! Tell us about the SEA CHICKEN name
ST Well, as you know, our fans give our watches nicknames, and one of those is the “Tuna” after the can…
MT (interrupting)… an inexplicably popular way to serve fish overseas!
ST Indeed. In Japan, we are fond of a flaky tuna product called “Sea Chicken”, so we thought this was a good name for this collaboration
MT Tell us about what Steeldive brings to this collaboration
ST Steeldive has deep experience leveraging innovative local wage dynamics, and an entrepreneurial approach to IP
MT Cool. What about the watch design itself?
ST We began with a dial of deep FOMO Black, echoing the snowflake-blessed silver birches bordering the glimmering azure lake as seen from our idyllic atelier on a moonless night. Then, we removed the beloved Prospex logo, replacing it with a printed Chicken mark between the Seiko and Steeldive co-brands. Finally, on the back, we have changed our familiar Great Wave off Kanagawa to an original etching called (translation isn’t great here, apologies…) “Grand Chicken of the Seas”
MT Amazing, I've never seen a chicken surf. What’s that at 7 o’clock?
ST We used to denote the manufacturing plant, such as Suwa or Daini, with a little mark on the dial. This is a kind of Easter egg for the fans. Laid by our Chicken
MT Thank you for sharing the new Seiko x Steeldive SEA CHICKEN! When is it available?
ST It launches on Friday
MT In stores only?
ST That would be very foolish
MT Thank you very much, Shigatsu Tsuitachi!
