As we approach the end of 2023, I'm forming my intentions for 2024.
I joined this forum 10 years ago, looking for some advice on buying a 'proper watch.' My first purchase was one of Eddie's finest, a Speedbird II. Over the past 10 years I have bought, tried and sold exactly 75 watches.
I currently have 11, with another on the way (purchased this year but it will arrive in 24) and two more up for sale.
I think I've ended up with some great watches that suit me and my lifestyle. To find your princess you have to kiss a few frogs. Some I have loved, lost and think about from time to time but I'm pretty happy with my current collection.
I'm still tempted to buy 'just one more watch' - maybe going full circle and getting something else from Timefactors, like a Smiths Military or a Speedbird III.
However my intention is not to buy anything in 2024. I have unsubscribed from all watch sales newsletters. I will try not to browse Sales Corner.
Is anyone else intending to join the abstinence club in 2024?

Sign me up, too, please - I still have far too many watches that haven't seen a wrist in over a year, and so need rehoming.
It helps that there's nothing on my radar since even my favourite mid-price brands have lifted their prices so high they're no longer good value.
Yep, sign me up.
I've come to realise that I have spent far to much time and money on watches over the years so I'm in.
I've a wedding to pay for, safe to say i'm in!
I’m doing better than that - I’ll be getting rid of pretty much everything I’ve got.
Fallen a little out of love with watches and since buying an Apple Watch, I rarely wear anything else.
Yep, I'm done for 2024

A tentative I'm in.
There is one watch that if it appears at the right price/time I may cave in for.
Other than that I'm done .....I think.
Can’t commit to abstinence but I will end 2024 with less watches than I have right now. Right direction.
I’m going to try in 2024,been clearing the decks so I don’t leave a lot of junk for my family to get rid of when I pop me clogs.Currnntly down to two watches ,plan to keep it that way.
I don't want to commit to abstinence but I will commit to just buying one watch in 2014. I'm 50 next year so I may push the boat out a little depending on how a couple of business things go down during the year.
It’s my 50th in 2024… so all I can say is that I will try to end the year with less watches than I started with, but I do expect to have 1 arrive for my 50th.
I attempted to be good in 2023.. reduced down to just 5 in the first 4 months.. all was going well, but I have gone up to 9 now.
I also joined here looking for advice, and because I’d recently bought my first Timefactors watch - an Everest Jubillee, which I still have along with 6 other of Eddie’s specials. This set me on a journey or buying watch after watch, but where I’ve gone wrong is that I buy more but never sell any. I’ll continue to read this thread with admiration for you brave souls and whilst I can’t commit to abstinence - I like buying watches too much - I will commit to selling a few in 2024.
Avoided any incoming in 2023 and expect nothing to change in 2024. Rather content tbh...

You called...... for those who may need context, I've just been on the walk of shame in the "2023 Watch Balance Audit" thread. I knew I'd been a bit lively with watch purchases this year but it turns out that 27 in and 16 out falls quite a bit outside the norm!
I'm not going to commit to complete abstinence but ignoring the Tornek-Rayville TR660 I've paid for and which is due in January, I'm going to try to add just two others in 2024, so I have a total of just 65. I really will try my best!
I shall state it won’t buy a watch in 2024, hoping that in doing so, WOS open the LV list up, and I get the call. I will then break my promise.
Reality is slightly less positive though.

I’m not joining, I would be lying to myself :(
I have a degree of optimism my Rolex GMT may arrive in 24, I have a meeting with my Goldsmiths chap to see the allocation guy. Maybe the numbers will be neutral if I liberate one of the PAMs, the Submersible
I’ve got stirring for a Big Block 79170, although if I can find the right one the Sinn 144 might need to go. Aiming for numbers neutral, but not financially neutral!

When you say abstinence...............................
Can that mean maybe getting rid of a few to get just one in their place, so downsize in general???
If that can work, then I'm in
I am done for a while.
Basically it’s just another way to say I don’t have any money :D
I intended to abstain from all watch buying in 2023, ended up adding at least 3 to the collection, which was disappointing having shipped all but one of the Rolex family in 2022.
The only spoilers would be if one of more of my desired older 44mm PAMs showed up.

There was similar thread last year and apart from the Willard I bought between Christmas and New Year last year I’ve not bought anything except a Seiko. ( A 1973 Chronograph)
I’ve sold two 14060M subs as I realised I didn’t need five Subs of various types and I always pick a date version.
I’m going to sell my Explorer and OP Red grape next year too.
Hoping to get the numbers down a bit.

Pfff, the world is sufficiently well stocked with misery to render needlessly giving up an enjoyable hobby superfluous.
I used to like buying / owning / selling watches, and now, for the most part, it seems I'm merely interested in owning them. I'm pretty sure that I was having more fun back when I was accumulating and disposing.
The master plan is to abstain for a year, whilst reducing numbers by half, then half again, to finally settle on 'Three and a G'.
Let's see how that goes...
I think the only time I could commit to not buying a watch in the next year is if I stopped breathing

+1....I’m 66 in January and keep telling myself I’ve grown out of watch collecting, but I still have the urge to buy something else. Really should take a ruthless approach and get rid of a few, I said that last year and it didn't happen!
I own 25 watches and a similar number of Fred Perry polo shirts.......wifey thinks I’m crazy in a harmless way.
Will definitely be having a quieter 2024 on the watch front, not sure I can commit to full abstinence though ?

Game on!
I was better in 2023 than previous years, but still made the fatal mistake of buying back models I had previously sold and couldn’t fully remember why I had parted with them (until I had them back on my wrist).
I have 5 watches today, 1 I don’t wear, but has sentimental value, so I have 4 watches that I wear in rotation. I may sell one of the existing watches, but if I do I will not allow myself to replace it. I have spent far too much money and time trying to refine and decide on a watch collection but that needs to stop for a year and see if it breaks the chain.
I pledge not to buy any watches in 2024. I will do a Friday wrist shot, avoid the sales section and delete my eBay saved searches.
My only caveat is if I am offered a 14060 at a price I can justify (which is currently about half of what they sell for, so that’s never going to happen!).
I am signing up to 2024. 2023 has been a bad year for incoming and outgoing, probably my worst.

I pretty much wore my Apple watch all of 2023, bought a moonswatch that's been worn a few times but that's about it. Am thinking of putting a watch or two onto SC but will make a conscious effort to start rotating through watches again through 2024, but no purchases!
I'm in
... Unless my AD phones me with news that my LV has arrived ... Which it hasn't done so for about 30 months!

I’ve tried to start off the year saying “no more watches” for a while now but 2024 I need to mean it! Got a Pelagos FXD last week and the high from that has got to last me for quite some time… may even need to put a couple of others up for sale at some point. Count me in for desperately trying to stave off the temptations! XD
Although previously one of my downfalls has been buying “just” another Swatch and then saying “oh well, that’s out the water then” and buying other brands. Now with no Swatch boutique nearby and the Covent Garden one I used to go to being a horrible experience because of the Moonswatch/Blancswatch security people I doubt I’ll be bothering.
My 40th in 2024 so no chance of abstinence:D
First abstinence stand up meeting/posts to declare no purchases made next week.
Stay away from all the Boxing Day watch sales.

I won’t be signing up for this. But for 2024 will plan for net zero:
“Maybe I will sell one watch and buy one. Can’t be specific, but a Zenith is missing from my collection”.
“ Ford... you're turning into a penguin. Stop it.” HHGTTG
Sign me up for 2024. Only one watch might persuade me otherwise if I manage to find one irl:
Today’s day one people! Stay strong and don’t look at the January sales! Or if you do then just buy a new strap for your existing watch or something.
