Nifty trick for Tesco Clubcard users, subscribe to Clubcard premium, you get awarded 2 10% off big shop vouchers per month and can be cancelled within 30 days at no charge. Tesco have quite a few malts on Clubcard offer prices anyway so for example Ardbeg 10 is £47 normally, £37 with Clubcard and then using the big shop voucher it’s a further 10% off. Handy if picking a few bottles up at the same time.

Does anyone watch ‘Ralfy’ on YouTube? His whisky of the year was Arran Distillery 10 year old, so I went and grabbed one earlier from my local merchant to give a bash.

  8. #3408
Yup, big fan of Ralfy. Not tried the Arrans yet so will be interested to hear your thought. The Bladnoch 10 was a revelation!

Gents, I have a good friends significant birthday approaching. I’m thinking of a Macallan 12 Sherry Oak, as that’s one of his favourites, are there any other alternatives in a similar vein that he may not have tried that I should think about?

If that’s one of his favourites then it seems like the right choice in my opinion. If you want to get something different, here are a few options:

    Nikki Coffey Malt
    Hazelburn 10 year old
    Old Pulteney 12 year old
    Amrut Fusion
    Lagavulin 16 Year old

These are all different from one another.

Agreed that it’s definitely a good choice but it’s always nice to broaden horizons, i don’t know enough to give a good comparison though. I don’t particularly want to stray too far but offer a different choice in the same vein if possible? Dalwhinne 15 for me tonight.

If you want to stick to that flavour profile it would have to be a GlenDronach 15 or 18, or GlenAllachie 15 or 18, or a Dalmore...

Thank you, a quick glance and the GlenDronach 18 looks good. I shall investigate further.

I recently found GlenDronach 15 to be disappointingly average....for the price point.

Don’t get me wrong, it’s a lovely whisky. But just not stand-out.

Just started my journey into the whiskey world. I was gifted a bottle of Laphroaig for Christmas and have been dipping into a bottle of Powers Gold label.

Any other more mellow recommendations I should try?

I have his book 'Search For A Whisky Bothy' in a queue to be read, by many accounts it's worth the time.

If you like the Powers I'd highly recommend a bottle of 12year old Redbreast. A superb whiskey.

A Scotch that I reckon is superb in that vein is the Clynelish 14yr old. A fantastic whisky that.

If you are looking for mellow then pour the laphroaig down the sink.
Macallan,Jura,Oban and Highland Park are all easy drinkers.

I can confirm that the Glenrothes 12 is a cracker....especially for £34. Recommended.

  28. #3428
Have got a couple of bottle here, but most have been mentioned in this thread.

I got given one of those malt advent calendars last Xmas, and there was one in there that was really different so I tried tracking a full bottle down.

Only just managed it, but it was definitely worth it. Its a French malt called Brenne, and it's got quite a distinctive taste, my lad who is a malt drinker doesnt like it but I really rate it. Couldn't place the taste at first but when I googled it, people mentioned those foam banana sweets and that pretty much was it.

Quite a distinctive taste, but possibly not for everyone!!

    Anyone else ever tried it?

I haven't tried it, or even heard of it before, but banana is a not uncommon bourbon trait, and I recall foam bananas being noted in one particular review I watched on YouTube! I'll try and track it down.

Do you know what grain(s) your French one is made of?

Its made from Barley, and as I remember, from Cognac so whether any crossover there, I don’t know.

Not many samples/miniatures have made me root out a full bottle, but definitely worth it for this.

Taste buds are knackered due to a touch of the sniffles (negative C19 result yesterday, thankfully) yet I feel compelled to attempt to wake the buggers up.

    Ardbeg's 10 should do it!

on the Tamnavulin double cask tonight, quite decent for £20.

i'm tempted to go for a Glenfarclas 105 as my next purchase, but i'm dithering between that and pushing the boat out for the 21 or 25 as they seem well priced for such ages - thoughts?

    Whiskey

I can confirm when buying a bottle of Macallan you need to factor in

    1) Shipping Box
    2) Transit box
    3) Protective foam
    4) Whiskey Box
    5) Papers
    6) Whiskey bottle

They must of been intering with Rolex over the summer

Don’t be fooled by the price of this, it’s a truly wonderful drop and a pleasant change.

Nose: Toffee, Apple, Nutmeg and Rosewater

Pallet: Caramel, Vanilla Custard, Muscovado, Mild Oak, Warm Spice.

Brenne Cuvee Special - yes to foam bananas, and one of the worst whiskies I’ve ever tried in my opinion! Sickly sweet and I’m a fan of PX and other sherried whisky

See you at the virtual tasting
If you're on this too, Stewart Buchanan keeps talking about the 21 and 25 having peated whiskies in their mix. No mention of that on the website, but I can see specific 21 and 25 peated variants. The ones in the set are the standard though...did you receive the peated ones?

I can taste hints of peat, but I can't tell if that's just because he keeps suggesting there is peat! (I was on Octomore 11.3 last night, and that might still be lingering on my palate)

Get together with a couple of pals tonight. Fire pit on, blankets at the ready and three whiskies i know will be present are Bunnahabhain 12, Aberlour 12, and Benriach 12 sherried.
Few bits of cheese, some date and walnut cake and meats etc, can't wait
