It's the "reserves" that are causing me problems too. Hard not to pass up some of the new releases, as they are becoming harder to find (and more expensive on the secondary market).

I've not really spent much time with Glendronach, but note you have a fistful. I take it you're keen on sherry?

Great stuff I'll open mine over Christmas!

Another Glendronach fan here - but their peated expressions are also top notch! This was me getting my collection out for a tasting session with my best man a few weeks ago. The 12 yo is a fantastic malt for the price. You can pick it up for £40, 43%, NCF, natural colour, and aged in PX as well as Oloroso casks. A dozen times better than the Macallan 12, which is £55-60, 40% and chill filtered (and nastily sulphured the last time I had a bottle).

Just opened a Pulteney 2006 11yo, bottled by Cadenheads. Rather nice. Wasn't what I was expecting at all, but rather enjoyed my first dram.

The old pulteney 21 was fantastic but now it's discontinued the prices have gone silly.

The Lagavulin and Bowmore are great drams. I have tried loads of others but I always go back to those 2. the Bunnahabhain 18yo will be included in my next batch of purchases.

By 'Reserve', I meant that a bottle will be replaced with a like-for-like when it's finished. but yes, the 'reserve' bottles can go quickly. A lot of them get stashed and will appear on the auction sites soon after. The Glenfiddich Winter Storm is a classic example.

I do like a sherry cask. Glendronach 18 is the bottle I've drunk the most. It really is a great Whisky.

Just stocked up on aberlour 12. Preferred it to the balvenie 14. Can anyone recommend a similar whisky to the aberlour 12?

Yes. Glendronach doesn't have the brand power of some of the 'bigger' spey malts but I think they are still producing great whisky.

Some of the bigger distilleries are so occupied with filtering (no pun intended) coach loads of Americans through the door that they've forgotten the thing that made them famous in the first place.....

Glengoyne 10yo is a great dram for the money.

Ah. I feel a bit better - my reserves are probably quite limited: I bought multiple bottles of the latest Springbank 10, and have a couple of the Local Barley 16 and 11yo. Also a second bottle of the Balvenie Peat Week. And the Kilkerran 12. Oh, and the Auchriosk and Glenrothes-Glenlivet. Bother. I forgot the Hazelburn R&K and the Glen Scotia 25. This *may* be getting out of control.

I was just about to ask about cabinets.

Any recommendations? Wife has said we can look for a dedicated whisky cabinet in the sales - something fairly tall and not too wide.

I do like the idea of these whisky barrel ones, but not sure that'll give me enough space:

The barrels are lovely but quite big once you get them inside and you cant store that much.

I got mine from coscto but I just checked and they don't have it anymore.

    something like this? https://www.johnlewis.com/house-by-j...83?colour=Grey

Good luck with that, the Bunnahabhain 18yr is an all time favorite of mine, seemed to be out of stock everywhere last time I looked, and the price now over £100, was £80 when I bought my last bottle a year or so back.

    A Happy Christmas indeed!

Batch 16 is due in February, I think. It'll have an already used ABV (Batch 13, perhaps?), but will be distinguishable by the packaging. Springbank were never ones to make things easy!

Worth keeping an eye on Cadenhead's: they have a few Bunnahabhain casks lurking in the warehouse - the last release was a 27yo (42.6%). Chiltern St has sold out, but there may be some bottles in Campbeltown / Edinburgh.

I bought a 'Speyside' single malt the other day from Lidl..... I must say I was impressed for the price - I think it was only £17.99....

    Worth the money I think

Glad to receive a bottle of Arran 14 for Christmas. Very much liked 2 bottles of 10 yo i've had in the past, hoping this is even more of a treat.

3 new arrivals for the Christmas period, a Caol Ila Distillers Edition, Benromach 10yr and the lovely Bunnahabhain 14yr Pedro Ximenez finish.
The latter is a lovely intense raisin hit!

I'm in Austria for a skiing holiday and today's après bar had a Tirol whisky. A three year old single malt. I had to sample it and can report that it wasn't too unpleasant for the age but could do with a few more years in wood. It's amazing where whiskey is being made these days.

Had a Macallan rare cask given to me last Saturday by a very good friend.
Very very good, even to my unrefined palate.
