Defo! The CS is a classic TCP bomb...and the sherry oak a much more rounded, elegant and sweeter dram, as you'd expect...price is a bit steep (same as the cask strength, and...well...not cask strength).

Picked myself up a travel version glenlivet nadurra for the holiday...disappointing that it's watered down to 48% for the 1l bottle, but it's first fill olorosso casks so still delicious

My brother in law sadly died recently and according to my sister he had a stash of unopened single malts dating back several years, as no-one else in the family likes whisky I`ll be 'inheriting' it, I`ll be seeing her tomorrow so I`ll give her a gentle reminder.

I`ve absolutely no interest in the potential value, I won't even bother checking. Whisky is for drinking in my opinion, not for storing as an investment and bragging about. I see no appeal to owning it (other than bragging rights with fellow enthusiasts) if you're not going to sup it.

Get it down your neck, that's what it's for. I certainly won't be pontificating over the 'nose' and whether it tastes of pastry!

Whilst I approve your thinking, may I appeal to the Yorkshireman in you and ask you to briefly check the prices before opening? There is the potential for some big surprises!

Regardless, it sounds like the vGTGs have a new venue when you inherit them!!

(Sorry for your sister’s loss btw)

Very much this - it's really worth checking Paul, if you're not really that fussed by subtleties whisky can bring, then you may find that one of what your brother in law had may well fund multiples of your usual drams.
Even posting them here will provide some guidance, though if it's a substantial collection a dedicated whisky auction house can help, as they often do free valuations based on photos alone.

Well, the nights are drawing in and the Damasko is reading "over the yardarm", so time to slip into slainte mode for the months ahead.

A GTG at your house would help resolve your excess whisky issue.

When i first tasted it, I've got to be honest, i was a little bit underwhelmed. Then i started thinking about what I'd eaten for our evening meal. Lots of dairy in the way of milk and cheese. I sometimes think these can affect the palate with whisky, anybody else think this??
Anyway last night i tried again and had a much more enjoyable experience.
The nose is sherry heavy and i get raisins on the nose and palate. Not Benriach 12 sherried raisin level but still quite evident. Spices on the tongue also but not heavily so. Very smooth, which again was nnot evident on first try. Decent finish :-)
Best bit was it was only £42 in Booths at Penrith. Last bottle though and had never seen it before. The also had Glen Grant which i already have but had not seen in there before.
All in all a worthwhile purchase.

I see some people have a large collection. Any one cares if a bottle is opened and hasn’t finished it in 9 to 12 months? I noticed some bottles say that it can’t rest long.

Does it turn the taste having a bottle laying around for more than a year?

In would like to have some special bottles to save for special occasions.

Bottles should last 2-3 years when opened, oxidation will have an effect (which can be positive or negative). I would suggest that if you have a bottle down to the last 1-200ml and don’t plan on drinking the remnants in the next 3-4 months then decant into a smaller container.

Depends how much is in the bottle - I think the general rule of thumb is ⅔ left, it'll be fine left for a good while. Anything less than that and you may start to get noticeable degradation. Any actual double blind evidence? None that I'm aware of.

I use the vacuvin gizmo on bottles that I'm really fussed about. Another option is argon which is heavier than air so displaces the air within the bottle and theoretically doesn't react, but it's expensive and I don't think my taste buds still notice... Interesting videos from DeviantOllam on YouTube recently on the impact on wine, but just one chap (with a lot of bottles of the same wine though!)

I honestly find noticeable variability with what I taste from the same whisky one week to the next from a nigh full bottle. So, so many variables impact your experience.

Watching the footy, enjoying this one. Very simple and a change for me, no peat!

Whilst it's unpeated, to me if you said it was peated, I'm sure I could find it! It's like there's a hint of peat just lingering throughout.

Octomore is the freshest whisky I've ever had. Green grass everywhere. But it's also the most heavily peated whisky in the world, on average.

Of the four variants I've had, it's the freshest whisky no matter which variant I've tried.

How is the Sauternes cask? I recently bought the bodega sherry cask which is lovely.
