yeah but its just a phase the 'daytona' thing we all get it. Ryan'l get over it and be back with another gs soon
Great watch Ryan! I pity the Rolex that has to face that one! :D
edit: and then I read the thread to the end and found out how much you really liked that GS... :x
To be fair to Ryan he "ummed and arred" over this for weeks and resisted my repeated offers at the GTG with good grace.
I knew he was bitten by the Daytona bug but was surprised when he finally did the deal because he was wavering even then.
Nevertheless I'm not complaining :blackeye:
Good luck to you Ryan :)

Wikipedia also explains it: The title is made up of the code-words that were used by the Japanese to indicate that complete surprise was achieved and is translated in the Japanese as "?" or "tiger", hence making the code for achieved surprise "Tiger, tiger, tiger"."Originally Posted by seadog1408

Flipping this GS for a Daytona
Or perhaps the GS was a "phase" as well. After all, "you must have a GS at least once" is an even stronger WIS doctrine than "you must have a Daytona".Originally Posted by Karl

Well since this thread has been resurrected I may as well take the opportunity to say what I think.
As soon as I saw it I loved it. I certainly think that it's very different from the Rolex GMTIIC - it certainly wears much biggger on the wrist.
The bezel is really impressive and very different from the Rolex (sometimes looks grey - sometimes black).
Like all Seiko's the dial lume is impressive too - way better than Rolex, none of which seem to charge as well in artificial light. The stand out however is the bezel lume - the way the arabic markers light up even in moderate light is simply stunning.
Of course the second hand is something to behold - very, very smooth and a constant source of enjoyment (sad but true). Even the crown fitted at 4 o'clock feels right.
The bracelet is much easier to wear because the centre links are only polished at the chamfered edges and so do not WABI. On the downside, the clasp is not as good as the Rolex (the weak spot on all Seiko's IMO) and the GMT hand looks cheap by comparison.
I really like the power reserve indicator - very useful for not only knowing how much is left, but also knowing how much shaking is required to get it back to full charge. The dial is big enough not to look cramped either.
I like the idea that there are very few of these around and anyone who looks will think it's a bog-standard Seiko (and there's nothing wrong with that in my book). Honestly, comparing the GS and the GMTIIC in real life is pointless - they really are so different that you can own both.
FWIW at first sight the watch reminds me of the Maurice Lacroix (you probably won't get it from looking at my pics, but from a distance I mean) - don't know why, but it just does.
Oh and it's a bugger to photograph like the GMTIIC :blackeye:
I will try to get some comparison shots with the GMTIIC so you can see for yourself.
That's the bit I'm always impressed by (and available in vanilla Seikos as well). But I wouldn't mind seeing these a bit more often, or indeed ever, in more outlets. GTGs are one thing, but it's a lot to plunk down on something sight unseen!Originally Posted by PeterM

I searched high and low to find any GS that I could actually look at from the first time I saw one posted here last summer. In the end I resorted to YouTube and the photos. Thankfully Ryan was good enough to bring his to the GTG. But you are right - it's silly, but Seiko do seem to regionalise a lot of their watches.Originally Posted by andrew
Availability only in Japan or via import seems really odd to me for such a big watch - it almost seems purpose-made for the Euro market :?
Seiya quote $6k (about £3700 on a good day) but then you have to factor in up to 20% duty which makes it the same as the GMTIIC at full list price... and that is really too much (for both the Rolex and the Seiko).Originally Posted by SternG
In other words, it's a great watch that is overpriced and nigh on impossible to find in the wild if you want to buy one.
I've played with this one, I own both Rolex GMTII,ExpII and Seiko 600M GMT.
In term of finishing and movement..Rolex can't beat this.
In term of resale value...Seiko of 4k GBP is hardly known to few..I like this more than the auto version.
I had struggled between this and 600M. I wished their hands were not with broken tips. While the 600M is made of bright ti and the 24hr hand is what I like..my choice is very clear.
"My" GS goes a long way! :D
Congrats, it's a beauty!

Bumping this. Interesting to see if/how attitudes have changes since this post was made. Seemingly so as a lot more people now own Grand Seiko/higher end Seiko and the prices have shot up since 2009 as well.
Goodness Ryan - some of us weren’t born when this post started! It would be interesting to go back to some one these posts and see how the watch world has changed.
My attitude has certainly changed as I used to be firmly ensconced in the ‘how much for a Seiko?’ camp. Then I met up with Kash of these parts and saw my first Grand Seiko, was immediately smitten, and had to buy. I had no intention of flipping the watch but then saw the Skyline GMT Springdrive on SC recently. In my current world I need to operate a one in one out policy so the GS went. The Skyline though is every bit as good as the GS, with Zaratsu polishing, the awesome two tone dial, and my first Springdrive true GMT movement. It is running to zero deviation after two weeks too. I’m smitten and also like the fact that in the current climate I can wear something this good and it slips under the radar.
I love the GS in question and a few other take my fancy like the snowflakes, but in recent years my appreciation of them has wained due to so many LE's/versions, to me it waters down what should be a top marque.
Bit like Bremont, certain watches like the MBII, original Alt1 are solid designs but all the limited editions involving every military unit and now the England Rugby team just fog over the really good watches..
Interesting thread. Certainly when this thread was started I can't say I would have even been aware of GS as a brand.
Now? Since buying a SBGE001 in 2017 it has been and remained my favourite watch of all time.
Key observation is the use of the term 'Rollers' in 2009. I've thankfully never heard that before.
I do think that the WIS community has a really good appreciation of the GS brand now however Seiko really needs to step up their marketing of the GS brand to encourage Joe Public. I've just had a look at the SBGP013 on the Goldsmiths site and it refers to it simply as 'Quartz'. Now to Joe Public, £2350 for a Seiko Quartz is ridiculous as you can get one of those for £99 from H Samuel.
It's slightly better on the Grand Seiko says which states....
Movement
Calibre no. : 9F85 Instructions Movement Type : Quartz Accuracy : ±10 seconds per year
....which might begin to spark some interest with JP but still no mention of the finishing or quality of materials.
