Ive got the same book, some great pictures.
Nice spot on the watch
Hello everybody,
Found a nice pic of him
in this book
The picture itself is quite remarkable and clearly shows McQueen's sense of humour
Have a look at his wrist.
Clearly a Hanhart as you can tell by the asymetrical pusher configuration and the small logo on the dial.
Steve had a great taste in almost every aspect of life... films, cars, bikes, clothes and shoes, women and of course watches.
William Claxton took many hundreds of photos of his friend over three decades. But in this book there are only one or two pictures where he is actually wearing a watch. No Heuer, no Rolex but this old Hanhart and one golden dress watch.
Hope the pics don't turn out too gritty

Great spot, never knew that, those guys at Hanhart are missing a trick there! think Tag!
You mean is Hanhart not missing a trick by firing up some marketing executives to fashion demand out of some tenuous, and very old, connection to a long-deceased icon of urban, and rather un-German, 'cool' and pass on the no doubt exorbitant costs to the slobbering consumer? Yes, I suppose they are :)Originally Posted by explorer 1

Looks very much like the Tutima Carlton Brown bought from me. I do think Mqueen looks like Daniel Craig in one of those shots, very cool guy.
I've been trying to resist a gratuitous Tutima pic. I think that the difference between the Hanhart and the Tutima is with the asymmetric pushers.
Mmmmuuussssttt rreeesssiiiiisssst. Oh bugger!
In the Sotadic Zone, apparently.
I do like that Tutima every time I see it 8)
The Tutima Luftwaffe replica is a tad smaller in diameter (38.5) than the Hanhart re-issue (40-41). A couple of days ago I've been to a local Tutima dealer and he had all new models on display. Tutima seem to have updated their range of watches. Gone are all 7760 and 2892-2 models but their chronographs are now available in 42mm cases which appeared to be very well made. The watches had high dome crystals, display backs and decorated movements. Probably not everybodies cup of tea, especially when you are looking for an exact WWII replica, but the manufacturing quality was remarkable.
I think you'll find that's like a Hanhart 417 Flyback, made for the Luftwaffe in the '50s. Typical of McQueen, they are rarer than the WW2 Hanharts with only 1,000 made, split between the stainless steel cased ES and the chromed base metal cased E (they have different NSNs). The hands are different to the earlier versions - note they look a bit like a Heuer Bund's - and the case is smaller too. It's one of my favourite watches. There are other photos around of him wearing it, particularly when he was racing his bike.
There is a McQueen reissue Hanhart - Grand Prix Legends were selling a ltd edition one on a bund strap.

Jon, thanks for your detailed reply. Indeed it's not the WWII version but the one introduced shortly after the FRG was founded. But I think it didn't last long as the Luftwaffe opted for the Junghans and then for the Heuer, Arctos, Orfina,...afterwards.
I somehow felt that there was something wrong about the hands as they were too straight and bold...good you noticed!
Very interesting, these new things appear all the time
Glad I could help Jan. When I have the chance I will photograph my Starfighter watches - Hanhart ES 417, Junghans J88, Heuer Bund (3H small T) plus Sinn 757 UTC which looks like the cockpit clock. The Hanhart, Junghans and Heuer would all have been in service when the Luftwaffe were flying F-104s.Originally Posted by Jan

Nice watch although I suspect McQueen could wear a lime green plastic kiddies watch and make it like cool 8)

Yes please - the J88 is a particular favourite of mine!Originally Posted by StampeSV4

Interesting thread, however so that we have balance - here is Steve wearing his 5512

You can't beat Mcqueen for style, check the folding Persol shades in the above pic.'The Sand Pebbles' is still my favorite rainy Sunday afternoon flick. 'This ain't the Chinese Navy! 8)
If you are in the UK and have Sky movies they are currently re-running Warlovers in HD, noticed that he appeared to be wearing a Tutima/ Hanhart fliegerchrono in that (sad b*stard that I am). That obviously is now confirmed as it seems to be the actual watch down to the Bund type strap.
Agreed, coolness personified, I have a pair of folding 0714 Persols, but it saddens me to say they don't look as good on me.

As much as I think Daniel Craig is a good actor, I don't think its right to say Steve McQueen 'looks like Daniel Craig', if anything its the other way round.Originally Posted by Chartman69
Steve McQueen had a 'coolness factor' few actors ever achieve. He did most of his own stunts, was a great motorcycle rider and car driver. Apart from his good taste, evident in his fabulous collection of vehicles.
The stuff big screen legends are made of ... my opinion, of course :)
Top shagger and great watch.
Probably, but he never dida that is why he is an icon :wink:Originally Posted by boddah

My Replika is one of my favorites, simple lines, a real classic IMO 8)
THIN is the new BLACK
Nice to see he wears his watches on the correct wrist 8)
Strange, I knew he wore a Hanhart but I hadn't noticed he wore it on the right .Originally Posted by taffytoon

He even made the Ford Cougar (I think - may have the wrong name ) look cool in the ads a couple of years back... so i reckon he could wear any watch on earth and its credibility, cool and desirability would be enhanced. 8)Originally Posted by boddah
it was the ford puma, but yeah you are right he did even make that look cool!
I wear mine on the right wrist too. Thought Mc Queen was aRolex buff?
The man had style!
