After 5 months living with the GS Mini, I've learned to love it. I got over the initial short-scale teething problems, and it really is an amazing guitar considering its size and price. It went on holiday with me this summer, which was exactly what I originally intended it for, so it's all worked out nicely.
But… but… I've been missing the dreadnought size and shape. The GS is small and sitting on the 'playing chair' in the dining room it can feel like a toy sometimes, although never sounds like a toy. I just crave a bit more heft.
Anyway, I'm on a budget after some unexpected household expense, but had a few guitars in mind when this popped up, used, but in great condition, for £250:
Yamaha FG830. Cheap, cheerful and extremely well regarded on pretty much every acoustic forum I've been lurking on. I couldn't resist.
I visited the Yamaha store in Soho in early summer while I was in town and got to play the FG800, the FG830, the LL16 and the FG3 Red Label. I nearly bought the FG3 there and then. It was just perfect. I held my nerve and maybe one day I'll go back and indulge, but for now I'm looking forward to playing the hell out of the brand's workhorse.
