Yeah when I went hunting for a new guitar it wasn't quite what was on my radar.

There's a Les Paul version of this and whilst it's faintly ridiculous, i quite fancy the matching pair!

    Nothing wrong with a pair!

Aye, it's finding one that's the problem! There's one for sale in UK and one in USA, but that's the only ones I can see.

That looks really cool. Love the way you described making an 'accidental offer'!

Speaking of changing strings, I recently purchased this Music Nomad Cradle Cube workshop stand for working on the guitars:

    https://www.amazon.co.uk/MN206-Cradl.../dp/B00TV90MT0

I suppose it’s expensive for what is essentially a plastic and rubber box but it is really well thought out and keeps the guitar very stable.

Looks very good, I’ll add it to my Xmas which list for the wife.

After watching Mick on That Pedal Show on Youtube, I started lusting after a PRS DGT.

When this came up for sale locally, I'm deeply ashamed to report that I had the breaking strain of Kitkat but Mother of God is it nice.

    That's the spirit!

Don't forget to stretch them with your fingers before tuning up the first time.

I'd recommend watching a couple of tutorials on Youtube. You'll see what Neil means about stretching the strings and there's a technique to lock the string at the winding post which will prevent slipping.

    Thanks Neil.

Didn’t go too well... just tried to re-string the guitar and broke the first (thickest) string I tried to fit! Now I’m not exactly a ham fisted person so was a little taken back but carried on fitting the rest and just thought it must be me. Then snapped the thinnest string when winding it on! Thought something wasn’t right as I’d even refitted old strings which you’d think would break easier.

Went to google and typed “fake Ernie ball strings?” And would you Adam and Eve it I’ve managed to buy fake strings! Took me to a YouTube video of original verses fake going through the packaging and everything showing mine were fake. There’s minuscule differences in the packaging but it’s there and it would tie in win my fitting experience!

    Off to try buying again.

Thats a bugger! Try somewhere like Strings Direct or a local music shop as more likely to be genuine.

Curious where you bought them from? Just eBay or a local dealer (or online shop).

Since there's no LP Halcyon available at a reasonable purchase price or distance I've been drooling over this today. If it doesn't disappear by the time this work trip ends i think i might make an offer.

Was eBay. I messaged the seller saying I think they’re fake and got an immediate refund and this message...

Cheers Neil, Despite the fact that it was a head chassis used to produce the combo, I was always yearning for the full on head and cab again. Will certainly make getting it serviced more convenient, and heads are less prone to microphonics than combos at high gain.

Someday i'll have a full fat SLO 100... will see what's left from the sales of my watches once the priorities are taken care of.

    Tekbow,

Sorry if this is an obvious question but why have you got the amp up off the floor on a wee stand?

    @hotbaws,

If you have an speaker cab flat on the ground the floor can soak up some of the bass and weaken the response. It can also transmit sound thru to the neighbours.

The stand angles the speakers so that they're pointing more at your head, as well. If you want to see the difference that makes, get your amp up on a table or crate, play and stand in different positions in the room, it'll sound different in different places.

    Thanks for the info.

I’ve only just recently bought a Blackstar amp to go with a LP but I’ve only had it plugged in a couple of times as I’m struggling for somewhere to keep set up on a permanent basis so it’s been sittin up on a footstool since I got it.

I’ll have a play about with it next time I’ve got the house to myself and see how it sounds in different locations.

    Cheers

    @hotbaws,

Another way you can check the effect out is on YouTube. If you search something like Mic positions for a guitar cab, it'll sound different as they move the position of the mic relative to the speaker cab, which is basically the same as your head

Nice choice, Blackstar are great amps, you'll have fun with that!

    My first, and only guitar.

I thought I might as well get a good one and be done with it.

Got a few guitars but need to make more of an effort, I always wanted to play but it is a steep learning curve..

This might be of interest to some guitarists, I hope it’s genuine and need to get it checked out but he didn’t sign much before his untimely death..

Hi folks, I used to strum a few chords as a young lad but never got very far with it. At the ripe old age of 43 I've decided to have another crack at it. I just picked up my Squier vm 70 strat and Vox pathfinder today, she's a beaut for the money. I've quickly realised that I've forgotten everything I thought I knew. There's a wealth of online knowledge out there now compared to the tab sheets I used to stumble through as a young lad. I'm just wondering where to start? Any recommendations for online learning resources would be much appreciated.
    Cheers 😀

in case you don't, have a look on You-tube at Guitar of the day which is a series run out of Norms Rare guitars in LA. the manager picks a guitar and talks about it then plays it. Ok it's a global sale tool but he is knowledgeable about the brands and they have some astounding guitars be they vintage les Pauls/Strats, basses etc. they had a first year Epi casino the other week that was just glorious.

Worth watching the vid when Norm arrives back at his shop with a lorry load of mouth watering vintage guitars.

The current electric-family photo looks like this.

L-R: '83 Gordon-Smith GS-1; '13 Fender Custom Shop '72 Telecaster Custom Closet Classic; '13 Patrick Eggle New Wave; '15 PRS S2 Standard 22; '07 Fender USA Standard Telecaster; '05 Epiphone (Peerless made) Dot (front).

    1983 Gordon-Smith GS-1

Rarely played, can't bring myself to sell it. It isn't worth much but it owes me absolutely nothing and you just can't get a mass-produced guitar made with this quality of wood anymore.

2013 Fender Custom Shop 1972 Telecaster Custom Closet Classic

Relics don't do it for me and I would never go out of my way to buy one. I wanted a 72 Reissue for years and in 2007 I bought a Japanese one from a grey importer. It was lovely but then I walked into GuitarGuitar in Birmingham 6 years later and spotted this one. It was SIGNIFICANTLY better, subtly modified by the factory (it has a 'belly-cut' on the back for example) and plays and sounds exactly as I want a Telecaster to. The whole package with the reissue G&G case, case candy and the Cruz Tools toolkit is just lovely. The relic job is supposed to reflect a guitar that was built and put into storage and just looks like it's been made a bit swirly with some wire wool. Prices have started climbing already too, which is nice.

2013 (ish) Patrick Eggle New Wave

This is an interesting and quite unusual guitar. It's made in the UK and is part of the new range of Eggles made by the current owners in Leicestershire. This is a kind of hybrid/prototype between New Wave 'Pro' and 'Stage' models. It's semi-hollow, all maple (top, back and neck), ebony fingerboard and instead of a tone control it has a treble roll off on the volume pot and a 3 way rotary switch which works as a coil tap to switch between either the inside or outside coils of the humbuckers.

    2015 PRS S2 Standard 22

Colour is apparently McCarty Tobacco Burst and as far as I can make out, it's a Miracle with a trem. I wanted a Mira, I could quite find one I liked and spotted this second hand, so I bought it. The S2 stuff is kind of PRS's midrange - made in the USA but about half the price of their Core range. I think the pickups, trem, tuning machines are made in Korea but the guitar is built in Maryland with the Core range. It's got a 3 piece neck (rather than one), the body has a flat rather than carved top and I'm guessing the pickup routing is a bit more 'agricultural' hence the use of a pick guard, but all in its a really nice guitar that cost me less than an SG, so I'm happy.

    2007 Fender USA Standard Telecaster

Everybody should have a least one Tele and it should be one of these. Or a 52 RI. Or a 72 Custom. Or.....oh well you get the idea. I picked this up cheap and I really like it.

    2005 (ish) Epiphone Dot

Bought this new from Thomann, who sent me a Chinese one. It was rubbish and they graciously accepted it back and looked in the warehouse for a Korean one (I asked nicely). This guitar is probably part of the last Korean production and was made in the Peerless factory (makers of their own mighty-fine semi-hollow guitars). I took the stock pickups out and fitted the Burstbucker Pro and the Rio Grande Texas HB pickups from the Desertburst LP STD when I fitted a pair of Pearly Gates. It's a really nice sounding and playing guitar and the panic doesn't set in like it did when I took a proper ES-335 out to a gig.

I've still got my Crafter Lite and Martin HD-28V and have no plans to move them on. I ought to recover my '93 Squier Silver Series Strat from my dad, but he's keeping it warm with a PRS McCarty and a Core Standard 22, a pair of LP STDs (one of which he bought last week when I was deliberating over buying it myself and turns out to be fitted with a set of 60s Grovers worth approaching $350 - the guitar was only £750), a pair of USA Strats, Martin HD-28V and HD-28VS (beautiful), a '78 'The Paul' and God know what else.
I really need to update this as , just nosing through old photos, I’ve burned through more guitars than I thought I had including (but not limited to):

    8 Les Pauls (3 Standards, a Custom, a Special, a Classic and 2 Studios)
    4 SGs (3 Standards and a Special)
    5 American Strats
    5 Teles (including 2 USA G&L ASATs, a Jap 72, a Custom Shop 72 and a USA Standard)
5 P Basses (2 USA and 3 Jap) along with 3 Jazz Basses and a Stingray
A 335 and an Epiphone Dot
And lots of other stuff including a Ric 360, the Eggle, PRS S22 and god knows what else I’ve forgotten about.

For now I’m playing a USA Strat, CS 72 RI Tele Custom, G&L Asat Classic and the Epiphone Dot. The Eggle needs looking at and probably a new neck and I still have my Martin HD-28V, which is going NOWHERE,and recently picked up a dirt cheap (£30) Crafter parlour guitar which needs attention.

I have a thing for black/black/maple Fenders so the Strat will get a black pick guard and controls and I am on the hunt for a USA Tele which will get the black makeover and I’ve got a desire for a either an older USA Telecaster Deluxe (bound body) or a STD that I’m more likely to butcher for a neck humbucker AND a modern Telecaster Elite in mystic black. Once I’ve got those I want something that I can have refinished in sparkle silver and then that’ll do me!

Bought a couple more this week, Little OM sized Vintage 300 x2!!

I found the natural one on Ebay (Buy it now for £59.99+ £3.95 P+P), The blue one was on Freeads with a small amp, A couple more softcases and other bits for £100 but got the bundle for £80!!

I have a pulled shoulder that's painful using Dreadnoughts, These little ones are much less painful to use and I was surprised at how loud they will play!!

The blue one has Mother of Pearl bindings, Just have to fit some fresh strings as these are almost black with age!!

I also bought another bowlback (Westfield) that came with a nice padded case but don't have a pic of it!!

Some very cool guitars and set-ups in this thread!

Thinking of buying a cheap electro-acoustic for me and the kids to mess about with. Anyone got any tips or opinions on ones to look out for second hand? Only looking to spend around £100 ideally. Or is it worth getting a standard acoustic and getting the electric side fitted afterwards if it warrants it / gets used?

    Cheers

Although me and the boy only play at home, we’ve accumulated a few pedals which were starting to look messy on the sideboard so this week I purchased a pedalboard. I went for the Temple Audio Duo 24 and it’s really simple to get a neat looking board due to the unique mounting system. Not ideal if you buy and sell a lot of pedals but definitely good otherwise.

DIY solderless patch cables work best as you can pass them through the smaller holes in the board as well as the larger dedicated ones. I also included the 4 way patch cable terminal and completely unnecessary LED lighting. Looks funky though IMHO.

I’ll need to book mark that link as at the moment I’ve only got a Boss looper pedal same as yours & my old Zoom multi effect pedal but I’m planning on getting a few others.

Collecting pedals is more addictive than watches but at least they’re cheaper! I want to get rid of the ME-25 and replace it with a few more pedals but my boy likes some of the more extreme sounds it can produce.

That is a great looking set-up! Really like the led lighting with it as well. Which pedals do you find you use the most?

I like things pretty simple so it’s mainly the Tube Screamer for a bit of gain/crunch, the Satellite for heavier overdrive and the Double Feature for fuzz. Most of the other pedals are actually more functional than effects anyway really. I don’t tend to use the ME-25 as it sounds a little artificial to my ears so I bypass that with the Lehle pedal - The ME-25 can’t really be bypassed any other way as it doesn’t have an on/off switch like most traditional pedals.

    Thanks.

Does the guitar in the middle have a greenish scratch plate or is it just the light? Looks very cool in the green.

If you're worried about pedal addiction, you'd better not look at the 'That Pedal Show' channel on YouTube.

No it’s the relfection of our green wallpaper! The scratch plate is just about the least practical material ever - polished steel.

Not seen that before. I’ll (reluctantly) check it out.

Very cool! Have been looking at the Tanglewood series myself - where does this slot into their overall line-up? The back looks awesome.
