It is a great choice of guitars.
Loving the Fender amp as well.

    New Amp Day...

It is massive and loud and it is purely for home use - what have I done?!

Possibly (especially with my playing), but that job has been claimed by our son as he plays the drums!

My middle son used to play the drums but he's in Florida now so I can't hear him! That said it's nice to have a bit of accompaniment when guitar playing.

Those Champion 100's are OK on the clean channel and you can always turn it down.
    Cheers,
    Neil.

    Thanks Neil.
Only had the amp a day or so and haven’t really had a chance to see what settings I like etc.
Just fancied trying one out and don’t think I’ll be turning it up very much!

I bought myself one of these :-
    https://www.amazon.co.uk/NUX-Mighty-...5&sr=8-1-fkmr0
It means that I can "play away" (pardon the expression!) without bothering the rest of the household. An amazing array of sounds/amps/ etc., all controlled by your mobile phone, directly into your headphones. Preset sound No.5, had me sounding like Hank Marvin and that's never happened before! It even got me to attach the tremelo arm for full effect! There's an updated version too if you want to splash the cash (isn't there always these days).

    Epiphone Studio LT Les Paul.

Bought at the start of the first lockdown, with me thinking I’d teach myself to play. I haven’t.

It mocks me every morning in my office.

Should probably sell it to be honest.

Any view on the price? They are £199 new.

Check out reverb for an idea on prices. I think a lot of guitars bought during lock down are finding new homes now. Never too late to learn

Don’t give up. Dedicate 10 mins per day to practice, learn and understand. You’ll be surprised how suddenly you move forward

There 'may' be a seat & steering wheel / pedal set up being delivered tomorrow lol.

Guitar sold to father in law.

Just the Hercules stand and a Vox AC30 headphone amp to sell now.

They are Seinhesser HD600’s and are great open back headphones.

Going into a Universal Audio Ox Box which allows silent playing using the tube amp.

I've been really enjoying the Fender Telecoustic I picked up a couple of months ago. However, the poor action higher up the fretboard was really starting to limit progress and frustrate me.
Today I removed the neck and shimmed it to reduce the action and the difference is incredible, nice low action higher up, no buzzing lower down. For a ten minute job that cost zero pence I couldn't be happier.

I would be interested to know what you used as a shim, and thickness to achieve the desired effect. I have a cheap telecaster I would like to try this on. It was a kit build that I did with my daughter, ok sounding guitar but the action is very high. Nothing to lose if it doesn't work, the real enjoyment was putting it all together, sanding, spray painting and lacquer applied over a number of days. Nice little project

Here’s my completely scratch built Telecaster that I made a couple of years ago. I went on a guitar building course at Shuker Guitars.

You start with three pieces of wood. A body blank, in this case Alder, a piece of maple for the neck and finally a piece for the fingerboard. I chose Rosewood. You do absolutely everything from bandsawing the rough shape, routering, sanding - lots and lots of sanding!! Shaping the neck, the fingerboard radius, fitting, levelling and dressing the frets. Making your own nut. Make your own Scratchplate. Soldering all the electrics. Setting it all up in the end. The only bit I didn’t do was the clear coat finish to body and neck.

I chose the spec which is standard Telecaster Alder body, Maple neck and Stainless frets with Seymour Duncan Broadcaster pups, Kluson Bridge with compensated brass saddles, Gotoh vintage tuners, standard wiring with CTS Pots, Switchcraft 3 position switch, Orange Drop capacitor and Switchcraft Jack.

The course is five days and is very full on but enormously satisfying. I learned so much!! The result is a guitar that is up there with anything coming out of Corona and far superior to anything made in Mexico.

Planning and saving for the next build which I think might be a Tele DeLuxe

I used a business card, two slivers about 5mm wide by the width of the neck cutout in front of the two screws nearest the guitar body. By pure luck they were right. I could maybe go a little thicker but won't bother trying until I need to change the strings.
Business card is fairly non-compressible but if it does an old credit card will do the same job. Good luck with it, its a quick job that doesn't cost a penny.
PS: hopefully on this photo you can see the new angle produced, I don't have a before shot sorry.

Thanks guys, I will give the credit card ago. Its just to make it more playable for my daughter, like I say a kit assembly. The fun was in the build.
The project self build tele looks great 👍. There was a guy doing a similar course (guitar build) in our town, unfortunately I discovered him too late as he was moving away but it was somthing I really fancied. Some of the results were quite stunning, especially in the more natural finishes.

Looked at them as a possible place to sell but they also charge the seller 16.5% + VAT, basically 20%. I’d no idea auction charges were made to both buyer and seller!!

Obviously you get the exposure in a specialist sale but I do wonder how prices achieved compare to eBay.

That looks like a great build! Must be so satisfying to play knowing it’s all your own work.

Have often thought about going on a course to do something similar. Will have a look at the one you mentioned. What did you find the hardest part to do?

    Cheers

Thanks! It is really satisfying and when people ask about it and you see the look on their faces when you say I built it from scratch is absolute gold.

Hitting the timing deadlines is the hardest part. It’s a five day course and you have to be at certain points at the end of a day to make sure you can finish it in the time. For example: being able to glue the fretboard to the neck at the end of a day so it has time to set over night or having the body finished and ready for lacquer at the end of a day. I over ran and needed the Saturday morning to make the nut, finish the scratch plate, string it up, set the intonation. Fortunately it’s less than an hour from my house so I didn’t need an extra night in the pub I’d stayed at.

I must say those self build courses do look interesting and will certainly give you transferable skills on your other guitars.

    A lovely job.

Agree. I’ve often looked at those courses but haven’t found any too close to me. Maybe will just have to bite the bullet and book a week one somewhere.
The Shuker one from the post above looks really good.

Am also planning a kit build first - the Solo ones look good and as we should have some visitors from Canada later in the year, might be able to get them to carry it over.

Fancy one of their LP styles. Are there good kit suppliers in the UK worth looking at?

I think if I wanted to build a kit I'd consider a Wilkinson.

I know someone who bought a kit Strat. He did a good job with the build but then spent a load more money on replacing most of the hardware with better quality kit. He’s now got a good guitar and a load of dog shit spares he’ll never use.

Rather than buy a kit I would buy a good quality body and neck from somewhere like Northwest Guitars or All Parts and then buy the hardware I wanted to finish the job.

I did buy a cheap partscaster a while back because I wanted to play around with the finishing. It’s stripped back and the next job is grain filling before painting.

And a Les Paul should never have a bolt on neck imo

That Wilkinson kit video was worth watching. Their kits do look very good, quite pricey but I suppose you get what you pay for.

A while back, I fancied trying out a SG - and found one a Vintage one on Facebook. Not great pictures, but for the price, it was definitely worth it. The word finish is a lot redder in real life than I've managed to capture in the pictures. I'm interested to find out what model it is, think I have the year worked out from the number on the headstock.

Set neck, rosewood fingerboard, stays in tune. Have cleaned it up but will take the strings off and do it properly in the next few weeks.

    That looks a nice one.

FWIW Vintage guitars always seem to get plenty of respect.

Thanks. I’m pretty pleased with it. Will take it apart a little when I clean it and change the strings to see if I can work out what the pick ups are.
The fretboard is pretty dirty so will need some scraping and the frets will need some polishing.
Not sure if I should clean the pick up covers and the rest of the hardware. Also not sure what would be best to use to clean those parts.
I have polish and lemon oil already.

A soft cloth and a non aggressive polish. You could try solvol autosol but be very careful as it may damage the finish. Try a little on the non visible side of the pickup cover perhaps

Broke out an old friend yesterday. Not getting used and prices have skyrocketed, so might be on its way out.

    Thanks!
It's one of the better backs, I think.
    Neck isn't bad either.

    Thanks, it is, aye.
One of my bucket list guitars but am playing a Gibson Dove mostly nowadays. Oh and a Jim Dandy - cheap and very cheerful!

Will restring, buy a little jazz amp and see if I get the bug again.

Here’s a few more of mine

EVH Frankie. I was contemplating building one but this popped up at the right time at the right price. The neck is fantastic with its no finish finish - just gets better over time.

Everyone should have something equipped with P90’s. Les Paul Special Tribute

Squier Telecaster Cabronita. 2013 Indonesian made. Gain hungry b**tard.

Mexican Strat from 2008. Doesn’t get played that often these days to be honest. I prefer my Telecasters

Unfortunately no guitars to see in this post but a little story.

Yesterday I went to pay my respects and celebrate the life of a family friend who recently passed away. It was a fabulous turnout with over a hundred people who all had tales of a remarkable lady.

Sitting opposite me was a humble man with an impish, cheeky sense of humour. We got talking and it transpired he was a luthier who specialised in acoustic guitars as well as mandolins and citterns. Naturally we chatted guitars for a while amongst many other subjects. He told me his name, said he had a website, so I made a mental note to take a look when I got home. Turns out this quiet, humble man was one of the UK's, if not the worlds, most leading guitars makers, Stefan Sobell.

Being honest I must confess I'd never heard of him, as acoustic guitars - especially of this calibre and I'd imagine price - aren't really on my radar. However is was fascinating and a real privilege to chat to him. You'd have never known he's one of the world's best luthiers, such was his humility. He was obviously striving to improve his instruments, despite their international recognition and evolving his craft to that effect. In short he's a truly inspirational man.

A youtube interview with Stefan for anyone interested.

    Cheers,
    Gary

P.S. I still can't get over the odds of me randomly sitting opposite him yesterday.

This is from Fender's "paranormal" range, made in China under the Squier brand.

    https://www.andertons.co.uk/brands/s...ed-transparent

It is a "Strat-O-Sonic". It's a bit of fun in which Fender have recreated the aesthetics of a Gibson Les Paul Special - the P90 pickups, the translucent cherry finish, the single tailpiece bridge, the minimalist pickguard, the black plastic knobs and the toggle pickup switch - and have applied them to a guitar shaped like a Fender Stratocaster.

These days Squiers are made in China and Indonesia. The Indonesian ones aren't bad but this one has reinforced my opinion that the Chinese ones are better - I honestly can't fault this. Beautifully finished and constructed. Whereas my Indonesian Strat is not finished quite so well and needed a bit of work after I got it - the frets were a bit rough and the fret ends were a tad sharp.

This one plays really nicely out of the box. I thought the nut might need a bit of attention - sometimes they're cut a bit too shallow in the Far East, but nope it's spot on.

It feels a lot like a modern Strat, with a 12" fingerboard radius. Has vintage style frets (not "narrow tall" as the Andertons site claims). The volume and tone pots both have push-pull switches for series/parallel and phase switching - that's pretty sophisticated for a budget guitar and wasted on me (these days I just play the neck pickup on everything).

It's very light. The body's made from Okoume; I think it's a two piece.

Check out the neck - by chance, it's been made from a rather nice chunk of subtly-flamed maple. Most Strat-O-Sonic purchasers won't be this fortunate (and some won't care, but I like it).

I just listed an Orange Crush 30r amp in sales corner of anyone’s interested.
Great practice amp, large enough for a small pub gig probably.
