Not been playing for a bit, been away a few years I think, but was asked by a friend to play a few acoustic numbers for her so bought my first ever acoustic guitar.

Not the best photo but will sort out a better one over the weekend.

    Valery Vaschenko was ace throughout.

Cost was less than i got for the 58 historic i sold on eBay! I got to choose the wood (blanks) board all the components fretwork! (went for very non 59 but very sturdy stainless which is slick as you like)

Plays like butter through Cornford Harlequin and a King of Tone or my latest greatest sound.... Earthquakes Acapulco Gold.

If any one wants a custom shop LP think about VV as an option.

Just got the modified WEM back from Guitar Aid in Putney (definitely recommend the guys there, 10% off labour for returning customers and they get parts cheaper than you can find).

This belongs to my Dad (well it would if he played still). He bought it when he was 16 in 1972 and has had it ever since. I have replaced the neck with a Mighty Mite maple one and added Gotoh machine heads and the rest is the 1960's WEM Sapphire body. It has a fresh set up and rocks two single coils for that stratty goodness.

It has picked up it's fair share of dings in its lifetime but I think it looks awesome and it plays very nicely.

This is my 'lite' set up as I live in a flat with neighbours!

2014 Gibson LP Classic (soon to be modded with Bare Knuckle Mules), Marshall JVM-1C 1 watt all valve combo, Boss tuner, OCD drive and MXR Carbon Copy delay on a Pedaltrain Nano with a Fueltank Jr power supply.

    Nice.

    That WEM's a weird one.

    Saw that earlier on FB.

My latest acquisition, from eBay (alongside all of the other late night alcohol fueled eBay purchases from that week!)
I have no need or practical use for a travel guitar - but the Hohner Steinberger GT3 which is always propped up next to my PC is probably my most played guitar.

It's pretty battered and could do with restringing and the bridge filling down a little, but for the forty odd quid it cost me I'm not sorry I bought it...

    That is epic!

Was it cost effective vs a modern reissue?

    Warning - Vintage Guitar Porn

Finally I found my grail guitar after a long time seeking it out. A 1956 burst Les Paul Junior. It's all original, although I'm not 100% not sure about the control knobs, but they are vintage and period correct. Apparently speed knobs were reasonably common on '55s and mostly by '56 they used the top hat knobs, but according to many, the speed knobs did go on some from '56.

It's got amazing checking and is in fantastic condition for a 60 year old. The single P90 is amazing, rich, fat, powerful and with enough bite for anything. It cleans up beautifully using either tone or volume and the neck is to die for. A stunner. This means that all apart from two others are going to have to go...but that's another story.

Lovely, looks in good nick as well.

Love a Junior, I've got a modern version.

My grail is a double cut in TV yellow.

Yes,it has its original thin frets and the intonation is spot on! Came fitted with D'addario 10s. I immediately took them off, oiled the fretboard and restrung with Elixir 11-49s, which it needed. The intonation with older 10s made it a little sharp (but hardly noticeable) higher up the neck but replacing strings changed that.

A few more fairly recent additions to my bass family:

First up, a 1973 Fender Telecaster bass. Bought from eBay (from the bass player out of Marmalade, if anyone remembers them?). Was in a bit of a state, and had had an additional Jazz pickup added. I sent it off, had the additional routing filled in, the body sanded to remove all the dinks, a repaint job, and a custom pick guard added. Massive sounding bass - those old 'mudbucker' pickups are well known for blues / ska / reggae / dub and for good reason.

Currently being used on tour by a mate of mine...

I liked that one so much, I got hold of another. This one is a 1977, and was in even worse shape than the other. The micro-tilt neck adjustment was missing, as was the original bridge, and this also had a spurious additional pickup added. Went off to the same luthier, who worked his magic, and it now looks like this:

Strung with flatwounds, and is my go-to bass these days. It's a bit of a boat anchor in weight, but I rarely gig these days, so it's manageable.

Finally, my new (to me) 1999 Rickenbacker 4003. My all time favourite looking bass (I grew up wanting to be Bruce Foxton from the Jam!). I've actually put low tension flat wounds on this, too, and get that nice mellow Sgt Peppers bass tone from it. Shown propped up against a Fender Bassman which I sold recently:

    Nice.

How are you getting with the wider neck and electronic tuners?

The brass nuts are known to wear but if you get in touch with Gibson they will send you a new titanium version FOC.

    Hi Neil

I've read and watched quite a bit about this model and I know "traditionalists" weren't happy about the changes. However as a learner I've not really developed any preferences regarding necks and I find the wider neck a little easier to play. I know the brass nuts were also an issue and on finding that Gibson would issue a titanium nut FOC I thought the 2015 was a no brainier compared to the price of a 2017. The G Force also isn't a problem, again possibly due to my learner status, I've tried a couple of alternative tunings I never would have bothered trying, and I find it really handy.

I can understand it's not for everyone but for me it's ideal.

Ps one thing that did concern me, the colour it's the trans Amber and on seeing it I thought nice traditional finish, perhaps I can go a bit wild on a PRS! GAS it's worse than watches:hopelessness

Well, seeing as we have a bit of a 2015 Les Paul thing going on, here's mine. The photo doesn't really do the finish any justice at all. The tiger stripe effect is much more pronounced in good light.

New guitar this weekend, and I think the first Jackson of the thread?

    It's a Jackson Professional Soloist.
Mahogany Body, quilted maple top and straight through maple neck. Seymour Duncan Distortion pickups and Floyd Rose trem.
Really lovely to play so far. Thinking of putting some EMG's in to make it the heavy staple of my collection.

I couldn't justify keeping my Gibson '56 Les Paul Junior. Too expensive, valuable and risky to gig with....sad but true. I put a thread in SC and it's going next week so I replaced it with a cherry Gibson Custom Shop '57 Historic reissue, made in 2008.

I have to be honest, there's really not much in it. Colour is different, obviously but in terms of tone, it's pretty much the same instrument. It's a little bit brighter and has a drop more mids, probably due to the pickup's age. The neck feels slightly chunkier at the nut (which is better for me) and it's a little bit lighter, so it does the job every bit as well as the vintage model, despite being not quite as aesthetically pleasing...overall it was the right thing for me to do. I'm very happy.

    Very nice.

Cheaper, and as you say hardly any different to the far more expensive vintage variety. Looks just like my non-Custom shop Jr.

I'd like a DC TV yellow Junior but I must admit am getting more into my Fenders of late.
    Cheers,

Decided to get back into guitar having sold everything off a few years ago: Jackson Surfcaster (deeply regret selling a beautiful and unusual guitar), Washburn Super-strat of some sort, couple of basses, and a excessively loud Marshall tube combo.

Just got a Epiphone SG 400 Pro, and one of the new digital Boss Katana amps from my local store (Mansons, Exeter)... cracking deal and really good kit... for a Chinese guitar and non-tube amp, it is amazing what you can get for your money these days!

I just got myself a Katana, It's a great sounding amp for less than the price of some pedals! it'll more than do me while I explore the sounds available and decide what type of amp I'd like to save for.

Heard nothing but good things about the new Katana - cheap too!

If I didn't have my Fender Mustang I'd be seriously looking at one of those.

They were a bit of an oddity, with the semi hollow, Rickenbacker style look, but very slim profile on the neck, similar to a "metal" guitar... and on some models a very powerful humbucker to compliment a jangly lipstick.... I really wish I hadnt sold it....

...but lots of guitars to try out if I stick with playing.... I would like to try a Ibanez JEM77... any PRS... something insanely metal from BC Rich....

I've flitted between guitars and had a few belters. The Rickenbacker 330 in Jetglo was a thing of beauty but I couldn't play the bugger. I'm OK talentwise, not great but steady, but I couldn't get the sound I wanted. My latest guitar is truly beautiful but again I am not bonding with it. When I bought it, I tried an ugly looking Telecaster which fitted me like a glove only to buy the Stratocaster because I felt it was more versatile. It might well be, but I want to change it for a Tele, preferably in Lake Placid Blue. Here's my almost new USA Strat...swapsies anyone? The rolled neck with those edges is just sublime. I should perhaps do a sales pitch in SC and might do I think. I almost got a straight swap deal from a local shop for a Tele but it was a hundred quid difference and I didn't fancy dipping in to my wallet. Pictures:

A late Xmas present to myself. A 2012 Jazz bass in Olympic White to match its '74 re-issue stablemate in black. Plan is to fit a fretless neck and see how I get on. If it doesn't work out, I'll put the fretted one back on.

The body is a scaled down version of the Taylor GS Neil, but it's only a little less deep. The scale length is only 23.5 inches, so a full 2 inches shorter than a standard neck. All of this makes it a lot more comfortable for me in terms of what chords I can reach and it sits very comfortably on my lap, of course the larger gent might not like this at all! ;-) The fit and finish is superb, as you'd expect from Taylor, and the shorter scale with a lovely low action makes playing the medium gauge Elixirs feel very light, almost like an electric. The comparatively deep body and large sound hole means the guitar still has a full bodied sound. There's no bracing on the back, which is laminated Koa (as are the sides) for strength and stability and is pressure formed with a curve to it, which helps project the sound. Here's a picture I pinched off tinternet, with a GS Mini between a Baby Taylor and a full sized guitar. I'll take some pics of mine next to my S&P dreadnought and post here in due course.

In a moment of weakness (read madness) I've succumbed and have just bought this.

    Pic nicked from the web

Probably shouldn't have really as I already have an early 80's Tokai Springy Sound and a MIM Strat. However I've always liked G&L (George Fullerton and Leo Fender for those that don't know) guitars and it has a coil tap so you can select the bridge and neck pick ups or all three pickups together. You can get a good Telecaster tone out of it. Plus the tremolo system is a lot more stable than a standard Strat.

Looking forward to getting to know it more.

    Cheers,
    Gary

P.S. G and L are my initials too, so I just had to really : )
