    Forum outage

I received a phone call from my hosting service at 2040 hrs on Friday evening, informing me that my websites were the target of a Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attack. More than 300,000 connect requests were made to the server in 30 minutes, bringing the server down. My hosting service took my websites offline whilst the attempted to divert this traffic into a "black hole" but as at this morning, the attack is continuing at the rate of around 70,000 connect attempts per hour, which is why the forum and website are still running slowly.

It's almost impossible to discover who is orchestrating this attempt, all the connections come via infected "zombie" computers worldwide. It could be a competitor, disgruntled customer (most unlikely  ) or something as simple as kids demonstrating what they could do. Steps are underway to minimise the chances of this happening again.

    Glad you’re back up now.

Could have also been one of those that have been banned from the forum of late

Glad to have the forum up and running again Eddie. It never ceases to amaze me, the depths some scumbags stoop to, to get their kicks.

    +1 and more!

What I would like to know is:

    1. What can be done to stop this happening again?
    2. Was it by any chance a rejected speedposter?

    Aye...

I just wanted to say many thanks to Eddie for sorting the forum, and whilst it might sound sycophantic, he deserves enormous credit for making this place run as smoothly as it does. So, thanks! :D

    Re: Forum outage

    Welcome back!

I really cannot understand the point in DOS attacks on such a website. It's not big enough for anyone to care... maybe 100 people tops were affected... I mean, if someone hacked BBC's website and put some sort of message, that'd be a real trophy but most people haven't heard of your website nor your products (it's not a negative statement about your business or products, of course, but reflects on the specific nature and focus of your business). And it's not like you'd be down forever so the dent on your business would be minimal; it just gives your ISP more work. It can't be a "that'll teach him" unless they say who they are and why they did it. It's a wholly pointless exercise. It's as irritating as someone breaking into your shed and stealing a screwdriver.

Great to see the site up and running again.

    Thanks Eddie.

How very sad that a small minded individual, or a group of small minded individuals (collective noun please) can attempt to ruin other peoples fun and Eddies lively hood out of spite.

Lock them in a small dark room and ignore ‘em.

    Re: Forum outage

Good to see things are (almost) back to normal 8) I used to work for an anti-DDoS technology company and appreciate the headaches these attacks can cause.

Could be a random attack but it's not uncommon for them to bet targeted and coupled with an extortion attempt (i.e. pay us XXX and we'll target our botnet somewhere else). Scumbags!

Welcome back Eddie. Can't understand why anyone would want to target a little known corner of the Internet like this?

It's good to be back 'home' at last. My missus thought the whole attack was great and that I deserved to go cold turkey for a while.

The few days absence has made me realise what a great site this is...thank-you Eddie! :D

Gosh--I didn't want to join another forum but was beginning to think that I'd otherwise have to make my peace with real life--and the terms weren't good...

My sympathy to Eddie for having to go through all this, and thanks that he sorted it.

    Re: Forum outage

Given that to mount such an attack takes planning and thought it's a form of perverse compliment.
First you need to create a virus, then seed it so it's picked up by hundreds of thousands of stupid people's unprotected computers. The virus is created such that on a set time/day/date it goes off and the DOS begins.

It's a fairly common form of attack and has hit major industries as well as, now, Eddie. Often there's a ransom involved to stop it.
