Awesome Jed, absolutely awesome. :headbang:
I often find it amusing when people call only some watch brands ' fashion watches' surely pretty much all of them -with the exception of the highly technical -fall under what we describe as branding success or failiure at any given time... as for panerai some people say there is no heritage, and admittedly there is a bit of a disconnect between the original manufacturers and what is being made now but I bg to differ...............
the panerai 6154, dating from 1953/4 and special order for the eygptian armed forces one of 30ish thought to have been made and one of 9-10 known of today. The case, crown and glass all by rolex, the movement a cortebert 618 improved upon by Rolex, the dial by panerai, doing that they did well back then.... a huge thank you to, Mike Wood, Paul J, Ralph and volker, Hagen in germany and for AndyG ,for all the help with the watch.
for a bit more on Vinatge panerai, Jake has done a real nice introduction and i highly reccomend the vintage panerai books if you want to see some great heritage...

Awesome Jed, absolutely awesome. :headbang:
Wow! Any chance of a few more pics if possible please? This is a very special watch, must have cost a small fortune.
Awesome 8) 8) 8) 8) I'm totally speechless, surely this should be in a museum and not balanced on a twig? :D
Congratulations, Jed - the small Egiziano is one of my favourite vintage Panerai and has more identifiable Rolex parts than Panerai :) This must be your most impressive purchase to date
Wow! 8)

Very interesting read, one question though, is your's safe to wear ?????????  :shock:Originally Posted by jedly1
The first Panerai watches made by Rolex for Panerai had the Panerai Radiomir designation on the dial and these radioactive watches were produced up until 1954.
Ironically it is still unsafe to wear these old Panerai watches because they still emit an unsafe level of radioactivity as we see in the two photos below that were taken by Philippe of a geiger counter measuring the current level of radioactivity being emitted by the radium. Since the half life of Radium is 1602 years, it will be many, many years before these watches are safe to wear.

wow
I'm speechless :bounce:
Yabbadabbadabbadoo!
(or the Italian equivalent!)
Welcome to "the silly oversized watches with history club"...
Nice stick, btw...
:D
What an icon. It's a privilege to see it here.
This watch is more than 100.000 $ watch ?
Right
With all that brown, I almost took it for something else :D
Sorry, it's not for me. :)
I have a great fondness for historical watches (ie, watches with a history rather than simply old ones) and I would happily own this one. Great find and yes, I'm a little jealous  .
Eddie
Whole chunks of my life come under the heading "it seemed like a good idea at the time".
Jed, I really hate you :D :D
Fantastic find
For me, it is also the history that makes it interesting.
I have to admit looking at the photo before reading the post and wondering whether it was faux wood dial :D
(I know, blasphemy!)

shane more scans after a minor service, desperately need some case screws as theya re long since gone :)
no probably not safe , but neither is driving :)
I'd be looking at that minor issue as a "man-challenge" if it was mine. :DOriginally Posted by WORKSIMON
Very nice piece of fashion history!
I'm soooo jealous.
Wear it in good health!
It’s great Jed , and to get the history would be icing on the cake.
Regarding radioactivity it doesn’t bother me too much.
Dad wore this as a pocket watch for 50 years swinging by his balls!!!
Died of heart related problems age 86 years.
But I believe sperm count goes up somewhat mum gave birth to 3 kids in 12 mths, BEWARE!!!!!
Best
Jed, you already know my thoughts on this watch - only wish it was mine  Glad I could offer a hand.
Seems a shame that its heading down under though - I think it should stay in the country - in fact I have space in my nice new safe in which it could rest its head :D.
As an side I have having a private bet with myself that this will be the next histroical re-issue we can expect from Panerai - especially after the Big Egizano re-release.
Best wishes and wear in good health.

Stunning (just mind it doesn't get picked up by a dingo  )
That is really very nice and also very special 8)
Absolutely fantastic!!!!
Nice one Jed - not bad for a fashion watch
When you look long into an abyss, the abyss looks long into you.........
Well, i suppose if you needed someone to caretake it for you, i could make a space for it 8)
That is very nice :) Enjoy!
That is something truly special...............................
Wow! What an amazing example!
Plus you had me reading into the history of Panerai for the past hour or so :)
Alex
oh good God.. that's pretty incredible i have to say...
That simply blows my mind.
I also like the laid back fashion it´s presented, like I would talk about my latest contemporary Seiko purchase.
Congrats !
Just finished viewing the link to the history of the brand.
A fascinating read and a great looking watch. The weathered tan coloured strap looks very "right" as well.
I had no idea that Panerai had that level of history behind it.
I was going to ask about the unusual beige face which could almost be part of the design but the question was answered in the text.
damn damn beautiful :)
hmm this one or the 5517 ? i just dunno likes , i probably like this one more
that browney dial is just amazing , glad its all sorted now looks totally amazing
good new look for yer new chilled out life , it suits ya mate :)
you can bin all those crappy rollies now :D
This is not a fashion watch.
It shd be in the Panerai Museum in Florence. :)
Absolutely amazing.
How long did it take you to piece this together?
The deal happened quite quickly to be honest and is one of those fate things, i had literally just played with some vinatge panerai at the Rolex GTG mentioned in a thread higher up, when the phone went and it was offered to me.Originally Posted by chrispat
as most people know the watch was pretty much as is,apart from the hands which were painted in gloopy black material , i think to make it easier for the elderly owner to read, so the real job has been in finding some original hands. with the help of some old, and some new friends i managed to track down some with a collector in germany who featured in the new vinatge panerai book and he was happy to release them in the name of a good and genuine watch... Mike was kind enough to donate a NOS Rolex glass and bobs your uncle...
sweeeet.....
Amazing
Great Work, Absolutely Stunning 8)
This one has even one my misses over and that's saying something :)
Very special watch - more pics please!
Good luck on finding out the history of the watch too.
Interesting watch, thanks for sharing this.
Hadn`t thought about the radiation issue....but I don`t think it would worry me :)
Paul
Looks awesome
Had a 0188 unil recently but its nothing like this great example
Really nice
Kin awesome thats is just soooo coooool
WOW
OMFG that is a tremendous vintage Panerai!
Look at that amazing dial!
However many you had to sell off for this one, it was worth it!
Cheers

  Beautiful.....congrats!! What providence brought you to that watch? I thought I'd done well when I got a luminor marina from a local antiques dealer for £450 knocked down from £500!! That was 2 years ago and still my greatest bargain moment. You should have seen my eyes light up when I saw it!! Especially as they had no clue!! Sadly I went a bit overboard gushing about the watch after I bought it!! I think they will be more clued up if they ever get another one in!!
There is one currently for sale on the Vintage Rolex Forum - $135,000.
Still cheaper than PAM 21 - what is that all about??
