Thread: There's something about wrist shots...

  1. #1

    There's something about wrist shots...

...that just freaks me out a bit. Am I alone in thinking they look a bit weird? All that flesh, hair, freckles and veins. If it wasn't for the watch, and occasionally a cuff, there are various other parts of the body it could be. And nobody has a particularly good-looking wrist, do they? You might say they're there to give a sense of scale, but I've no idea if you're built like Hulk Hogan or Montgomery Burns...

Here's an example. If it's yours, please don't take offence - but do you see what I mean? The vein? The wispy hair? I'm sure you're a handsome fella, but your wrist isn't your best feature, and it's just distracting me from the watch...

You're not alone, 2wrists - I don't even like seeing close-ups of mine in photographs.

What I'm finding really funny here is that:

    a) I'm not the only one who thinks there's something a bit repulsive about wrist shots, and
    b) That you've created a formal thread on the issue

Actually, I find wrist shots useful. Seeing a watch without a wrist is seeing it out of context, so generally I'd rather see it on the wrist than off.

I agree,in fact I hunt good quality amateur wristshots on the net.... for future reference  .For example,I wanted desperately to buy a Steinhart Nav B-Uhr pilot but when I saw (realised) how big it was on a wristshot I forgot about the whole thing !

That would be my wrist that.

Taking a recent photo posted here and publicly ridicule it is IMO very poor form.

Sure this is a relaxed watch forum but you sort of p***ed me of commenting on my shirt and hairy wrists. If you had exposed yourself for a witty comeback or shown something freakishly "weird" yourself showing good sports about it I wouldn't have been so provoked I think.

Anyways this is probably my low blood sugar ranting but I have promised to never let steam build up inside for such unimportant things as snug remarks hence I write this blow some steam of and let you and other as well know that I took offense.

    Cheers

It was meant impersonally, John - I think the point was that there's something a bit macabre about most wrists shots.

Always good to blow off some steam though :)

And nice Tudor by the way.

Nonsense! There's plenty of pics about where the photographer has placed his girlfriend on a vehicle, presumably to help the viewer judge the scale.

A bit macabre? Joining a watch forum and complaining about the wrist shots is far stranger. Perhaps you should start a Poll on the subject...

    Dear John,

Many apologies. I meant no offence, and I certainly don't wish to offend a man whose wrist shot makes a Tudor look small! My point was that NOBODY's wrist looks good - I have nothing against your wrist in particular. I certainly have nothing against your shirt - I have one just like it - or your watch, about which I left a complimentary comment on your thread.

I would happily post a picture of my own wrist for ridicule, but I don't think I've ever taken one for the very reason I started this thread.

    Once again, apologies.

Interesting subject! There sure are some pig-ugly wrists out there (including mine) but it does give a reasonable perspective especially if you haven't seen/handled a particular watch yourself!

Can`t believe the strength of reaction on this topic :o .

Wrist shots are a useful way of showing how the watch 'wears'. Omega did it in the late 60s with the original Dynamic. I find wrists neither attractive nor repulsive; as for the hair aspect mine are 'average' but I don`t see how this matters :?

As for the bear/check shirt comments, I thought it was funny but maybe lost some of the humour in translation :D

I`ll continue to use wrist shots when selling, I think they definitely help.

Re: There's something about wrist shots...

Well phew, thanks mate, Im just glad its now out in the open! I thought it was just me that felt like I might not be a proper watch enthusiast by finding anonymous mens arms a bit strange and also not wanting to share mine! Freud would have a field day!

I understand the whole scale thing but mm are more accurate. Im already treading a fine line with my lovely Mrs when we are sat together on the sofa, Ive got the laptop on my laptop, she'll say 'cars or watches?' and it will be one or the other. I understand her finding my passions a little strange but its not helped when she glances over and sees a big strange hairy man's arm resting on my lap!!

Of course, not meaning to disrespect the aesthetics of any chaps I might end up trying to purchase a watch from but theres another thing Ive just thought... Well, I dont suppose any of us like to think of our special partner with someone else. Well, imagine perusing here as we all do, the accidentally seeing your latest SC bargain with its previous partner, looking more tanned, toned, hairier and generally more masculine! It would be awful!!

As absurd as it may sound, this is quite wrong.
The way a watch "sits" on your wrist is far more important than the size in mm. What's more, the thickness of the bexel - and therefore the relative size of the dial- also makes a huge difference.
To be honest the wristshot is not the best guide (you have to wear it yourself and look in a mirror) but it brings far more info than any detailed measurements would.

The only wrist shots I had lying around of my little wrist... I have some hair there, enough to show its a not-hairy-guy or a hairy-girl, at least.

I think it's bad when people stretch their hand so that their palm is facing outwards, making the skin bunch up at the joint... especially when the crown gets buried in this folded up skin
