"Chronometer" means a measurer of time, just as a thermometer is a measurer of temperature. However, "chronometer" has become a technical term, used just for those movements that have been certified to meet some standards set up by the Swiss watch industry. Many movements that meet those standards haven't been certified. Not all automatics have been certified.
