Thanks for posting. What is it with Russians ... printing pictures on the dials?

I believe the technical term is "icons".

To be fair, the issued CCCP Kommandirskijes mostly just have the red star... impressive collection, Duarte! Thanks and congratulations!
    Cheers,

Did the Russian armed forces really wear watches with pictures on?

If you were in the army would you have a tank on the dial or in the Navy a sub or whatever?

I've even seen KGB ones, surely they would want to keep under wraps?

I think the ones I've seen are just mil style churned out by the Russians to feed the ironic collecting habits of Westerners.

I've seen brand new Mig 29 clocks at boot sales very cheap, along with the Vostoks and fur hats.

    Anyone know for sure?
    Cheers,
    Neil.

My hunch is the same. I can see the red-starred ones being genuine issue, but all others are "theme" watches IMHO.

Yes, and no.. the KGB also had uniformed personnel, actually

The KGB had entire units (regiments) of uniformed personnel. They were not all "cloak and dagger" although I agree that most of the "icon" watches were novelty items. However, the "3AKA3 MO CCCP" watches are undisputably military issue.

One of my submarine dial Komandirskies is an MoD watch.

    <center><img src=http://onfinite.com/libraries/287323/a60.jpg></center>

However, this one, with the same dial design but different case and crown at 2 o'clock, is not MoD.

These 200 M Amphibia are not marked as MoD, but some may have been used by Navy divers possibly.. there was a 300 M Amphibia that almost definitely was Soviet Navy diver issue.

This one is marked "Space Defence Command, Ministry of Defence of Russia"

This is the current military issue Russian watch, as observed on the wrists of Russian peacekeeping troops in the Balkans in recent years.
(I have switched the bezel for an older model in this case). These ARE NOT specially marked.

    Here is the correct bezel:
