Re: what brands just don't grab you?

I think there is so much variety in most manufacturers' ranges, that with the most outrageous brands excepted (Jacob?), "dissing" an entire company is more a commentary on the people who buy them. For example I'm not at all keen on any of Oris's headline watches but I think the original BC - old fashioned, retro even, a bit delicate - is great. And I wouldn't give Omega a further thought if it wasn't for the electric-blue Seamaster, even though it's now been discontinued. So for me it's not about the brand as a whole, and more about an "average" (do I like, for example, more than half the designs they offer?).
...but what do I know; I don't even like watches!

That's their strength, they don't have to try so hard to be 'in your face' hence why they sell so well and are mostly sought after by WIS = brilliant engineering/finish/subtle designs that you don't tire of
    Peter
Thats the point; i'm not looking for in-yer-face design. I love subtle and the modern IWC's in general doesnt warm to me. There's always something somewhere on them that just doesnt look quite right and/or I just dont 'see' the quality in them. However, when i look at the vintage IWC's, i get it straight away.
Yews. must agree - it is the older GST styles I am referring to, apologies !
hence why I have a Aquatimer 3536ti version ''in my box''
The newer ones do not float my boat at all !

Very well put! Though most of the brands i mentioned i dont like any of there offering(eg dont like any Breitling)! Then in the brands i do like eg JLC i dont like diving range but i like everything else they offer ,same with IWC only like the portgeuse & nothing else really!

Didnīt really care for Rolex subs until I saw one in real life. Build quality was very nice and there are something with a Rollie, they just drag you into it.

Same with Panerai, thought the design was somewhat boring but after seeing one I donīt think so anymore.

I can't believe the number of times Breitling get a mention nearly every other one

As for me i'd give most things a chance but Seiko and G-shocks certainly wouldn't be in there :?

A few years back i would have listed Rolex. I found them vulgar, over-priced, and felt that they were generally worn by people that had a point to prove. Now much of this was based on a degree of immaturity on my part, i guess but also largely on lack of knowledge. Since becoming more interested in watches, i now completely 'get' Rolex's and why people like them... to the point that i now own one. So i wonder how many people that dont 'get' the Rolex thing have actually owned or worn one?
.......Or just don't know much about watches?

Whilst I can understand some people not being keen on the style of certain models I have never met anybody whose knowledge of horology I respect that hated Rolex.

I definitely think the hatred comes from something else rather than the watches.
    Cheers,

Re: what brands just don't grab you?

    Panerai
    G Shock
    AP
    IWC
    Hublot
Breitling (I used to like them but now I perceive them slightly differently)
    & Rolex.

The only Rolex I've ever seen that I really like was the green bezel anniversary Submariner. Do I like it to the tune of Ģ3.2k for a used one? No chance, I like it to the tune of Ģ200 for a second hand Debaufre minter.

Rolex - Can't stand ball & stick hands
Panerai - Don't like their shape or crown arrangement
Toshi - Because they mostly seem to end up on diver's watches
Breitling - It's mainly their bezels and slightly vulgar design

Re: what brands just don't grab you?

There are very few manufacturers that I would dismiss offhand as there is usually something in their line up that I would wear. However I have very little time for:

    Jacob & Co
    Graham
    BRM
TW Steel (Do they even class as a manufacturer?)

Re: what brands just don't grab you?

Wasn't going to add anything to this, but I then read Mike Wood's post on his new Ploprof. Rather than rain on his parade, I thought it more polite to state on this thread that they leave me cold.

Breitling 's are just too complicated for their own good, what with unnecessary bezel tabs and screws, AP's are the same with those bezel screw slots (plus they're really ugly), but the Ploprof really is 'orrible... ungainly, and if we're being honest, not a good design. I used to dislike Rolex Subs, but while they still (to my eyes anyway) have their faults, one can't deny that it's a cracking design, especially compared to the PLOProf...

    Your mileage may vary...

Re: what brands just don't grab you?

What you see here is what always happens...the most successful and popular brands are also the most hated. In football, Man Utd are always voted most popular team and most hated. They polarise opinion. Most popular and most hated DJ? Same bloke, Chris Moyles. It used to be Chris Evans. No surprise then to see Rolex and Omega frequently mentioned. They are to watches what Macdonalds is to fast food outlets. Highly visible targets to be loved and hated in equal measure.

Re: what brands just don't grab you?

Too many to list them all, but they fall in to about 3 catagories.

    1) Brands that on the whole I dislike the vast majority of their range - e.g. Jacob, Corum, G-Shock, Graham, U Boat, TW Steel, Festina, BRM & Frank Muller

    2) Brands that don't (as far as I know) make anything that I want to buy - e.g. Gucci, Citizen, Rotary, Bell & Ross, Cartier, Hublot, AP, ORIS, Tag Heuer (at least from the recent range), JLC, Rado, Ebel, Tissot, Ulysse Nardin, Ball, Maurice Lacroix, Kobold

    3) Brands that I only like a small proportion of their range e.g. Rolex, Breitling, Paneria

and before someone asks me if I'm sure I really like watches, that still leaves lots.

Why the hate for Tag Heuer? Seems to me that some WIS have a little snobbery over the Tag part. If it just said Heuer, would you be all over it? :?

because now instead of making iconic and timeless watches, they now seem either stuck in the '90s or just trying too hard. and too many quartz!

Not too keen on Panerai. IMO, they are a expensive fashion watch, only time will tell if the fad will fade.

I can't think of any brand where I wouldnt find at least one watch in it's range that I could imagine owning/wearing, but that's not to say I'd buy it!

I can't help but feel if another thread was started asking which brands DID grab you, then the same names would appear?

No, please don't anybody start one! :)

I can't see much wrong with Seiko automatics, I picked up a SNK803 for about Ģ30 which I thought was a bargain for a new auto, I must confess I don't generally wear it, a little small for me, so it sits on the winder and keeps relatively good time. I'm sure my Son will appreciate it when he's a year or two older.
