Less that 5mm seems unlikely. Try Nomos, they do pretty thin watches, but more like 6.5mm
Hello all - please be gentle with me! :)
The big four-o is rapidly approaching and a nice watch is top of the list for suitable recompense. Budget is ~£1k and I'm looking for something slim (<7mm) and not too flash. I'm not looking for a Rolex/TAG style and would be happy to buy SH from the forum or AD. I really like my Skagen beater.
Any suggestions appreciated :)
Edit to say <5mm is unrealistic so <7mm :D

If has to be slim then you re leaning towards dress watches;
May i suggest Baume & Mercier have a great range of watches that shold fufill your criteria! I used to own one & recommned!
Maurice Lacroix also do soem nice dress watches in your price range!
and Nomos is also one to consider!
welcome
Welcome to the forum foxy
I was going to suggest Movado as they are pretty thin - about 6mm - and are pretty cheap second hand.
Nomos for me. Their alpha movement is a very slim handwound 'Manufacture' movement. In the 'Tangente' solid back the watch is only 6.2mm thick. Classic, understated Glashutte loveliness :)
Read about the movement here:
http://www.glashuette.com/en/werke_alpha.html
and the watch here:

Can be had from Neil at Chronomaster for under a grand (900 notes I think). Definitely Specialish!
Edit: I have a Movado Museum Watch that is certainly slim... but would still rather have the above.
Thank you all for the welcome and suggestions so far 8)
The NOMOS is a great suggestion - I really like the simple lines and I'd never heard of them before
Need a bit more time to browse the others...
Why not try to find a vintage watch made 40yrs ago? You should be able to get something nice for that budget - say an Omega, or even a dress Rolex. Or perhaps a gold watch that you can date through the hallmarks.

A 40 year old Longines or Omega dress watch should fit the bill.
Thanks Tim & Gurmot, the sentiment there is very appealing - could you point me in the direction of an example?Originally Posted by erasuretim
Here you go Foxy, I did exactly the same last year for my fortieth and bought this 1968 Omega.
On the subject of thin watches, and admitting it's nothing like the Rolex or Tag you suggested, but Rado make a beautifully thin dress style watch called an Integra. Bang on your budget too, I think they're about £1,000 or just over now. They do different colours too, and are made from ceramics and stainless steel so extremely tough and virtually scratch proof.
And don't forget the birthday cake...! :D
You could try ebay with the search term "1969 watch" and see what comes up - here is a link to recent completed listings:

Actually, I said 'not' like TAG or Rolex :lol:Originally Posted by Ari

Hmmm, not really as virtually all of mine are well above the thinness that you require. :)Originally Posted by Foxy
Although I did have a Longines Ultronic that was a slim-ish dress watch and you should be able to get one for a couple of hundred

You need an ultra thin vintage JLC...
I reckon that would be special enough (but unfortunately for you it's not for sale... )
Good luck with the search. :)
You big tease!!!
Out of interest - if it were for sale, how much would it be?

In that case the Rado might do you rather well. Have a look here:

+1 for Nomos. It seems that a Tangente will be coming my way pretty, pretty soon.
I'm not convinced I'll ever sell it - it is pretty much the perfect dress watch for me. :)Originally Posted by Foxy
However, a quick search on the bay shows some similar JLCs going for around £650 - £700 (although most don't look in as good condition as mine... :D )
Happy to PM you a couple of links if you want but I have no knowledge of the sellers or the watches so it would be over to you after that...!
Cheers,
Paul
Thanks Paul, have had a look myself and seen quite a few - food for thought :)Originally Posted by lawnmowerman78
It has to be said that the Nomos is favourite at the moment - shame it's not automatic, but I guess it would then be fatter?
Absolutely :)Originally Posted by Foxy
For a really special piece I have no issue with hand-wound personally; you're probably not going to be wearing it as a 'beater' and more than likely not be wearing all the time, so constantly resetting an auto may wind you up (pardon the pun) :D
I do like them though. A lot. You have me thinking now... If you get one please post a review and pics :)
OK, so it's taken a while but I finally got that 40th birthday present - a little over 2yrs late!

First suggestion was the best!
Special thanks to parabola and kungbil' :)
Now the search begins for a birth year heuer or rolex :D
Only 35 more posts 'til i can get into SC!
I was just reading the post, not realising it was from 2009, and about to add my +1 to a Nomos. It turns out you've followed IMO the best advice and gone for it - congrats!
I just don't think much else can touch them for the money (even though I bet they were even better value in 2009)!

Yes , i think you're right!Originally Posted by robcat

Looking at the sellers history reveals he made a few quid on the sale to me after buying it from a German dealer who lised it badly - didnt mention it was auto in the listing.
