    Seagull 1963: where to buy?

Having not bought a new watch in, ohh, more than a month, I'm now considering a Seagull 1963. I found this site http://www.watchunique.com/featured/1963-air-force.html which claims to have them in stock for €125. Has anyone bought from here, or can you advise me of a better/cheaper/more reliable place to find one?

    thanks, Tim

    Hello Tim,
Read your post and went looking for the watch. Great looking watch, something I'd buy.

Looking at other watch forums, I found this chap cnmark Marcus, at ww.watchuseek.com

If you read the posts, he seems a respected memeber of that forum who lives in Hong Kong. He seems to trade in Seagull watches

    http://forums.watchuseek.com/showthread.php?t=62127

    Hope this helps

    Also found this

"Other than Markus, there's another place you can get the seagull chrono,

    watchunique.com

There are quite a few WUS people who bought from that site"

The 1963 looks nice and i like it, could do with a brother to this Seagull that i was lucky enough to get off SC last year.

    Lovely movement.

Ditto, although i gave mine away to my sister, so can't complain really. They're lovely looking.

Markus doesn't have anymore in, I know as I got the last one!! So it looks like watchunique is the only new source for now.

Marcus has a couple in stock that have failed his accuracy standards - he's willing to offer them at a lower price, but I've not as yet asked what that would be.

Just got mine from Ivo at Watchunique - 2 day delivery from Holland! I immediately put it on an Eddie brown open ended aviator, 18mm, it looks great!

Re: Seagull 1963: where to buy?

Mine arrived from Holland this morning. I don't think it's quite as nice as the last one I had - the winding and pusher operation isn't quite as positive - but it's still a lovely looking watch. Everything works, timekeeping seems ok from what I can see so far.

The pushers appear to have chemically blued in a slightly hamfisted way, unless it's a coating or sticker or something :? It's not horrible but it's not necessary either.

Overall I'm still glad I got it.

jd I think that's a protective sticker. Seen that quite often on watches from "far east".

Re: Seagull 1963: where to buy?

I got mine from there last Wednesday. Ordered the previous Thursday midnight.

It will get one of Eddie's straps in due course. So far it's keeping good time. The knurling on the crown isn't very pronounced so it's not the easiest of watches to wind.

Re: Seagull 1963: where to buy?

From what I've gathered, the watchunique version differs slightly from Markus' version.

Markus' first batch had the unfilled star, 19 zuan on the dial and solid caseback. His subsequent batches were mixed and some of them had the red filled star and some were offered with the display back.

Watchunique's version has 21 zuan on the dial and a red star, IIRC. The solid back is standard but an optional display back can be purchased (when in stock).

lysanderxiii tore down a ST19 a while back and at least that one had 23 jewels but you see the ST19 advertised as having 21 or 22 jewels. It may depend on the variant.

    Cheers,
    gigfy

Re: Seagull 1963: where to buy?

True, this does have the red star and states 21 jewels.

Here's an interesting comparison. It's reputed to be the case that the ST-19 is an old Venus movement bought from the Swiss. This image is borrowed from thewatchspot.co.uk

    with that Venus movement in.

Image nicked from rongood.net on WUS, hope he doesn't mind.
Note the similarity between the dial of this watch and the Sea-Gull's.

Interesting stuff. I'm not normally a fan of 30 minute chronos but its such a pretty dial and handset... and different. I may compare mine to my old one, which my sister has, if I get the chance.

haven't got mine yet -- but hopefully as you lot have yours, mine is in transit somewhere (I wonder did it go from China to Holland and now back around the world again to Australia?).

Re: Seagull 1963: where to buy?

I ordered mine from Watch Unique too. It arrived in four days. So no problems there! Their site was kind of scary though - apart from the Seagull everything looked like overpriced sh-t.

The watch looks great. I've been eying it on various online WIS-forums for the last year or so and now I finally pulled the trigger and bought one. The bluening of the chrono pushers looked weird but, as jd wrote, it was just to remove it with a fingernail.

Everything about it feels very mechanical in a good way and the ticking is loud and noticable when you have it on your wrist.

Here's a few quick shots. I was to lazy to use the tripod...

Seen that index/numeral type more recently:

I found some pics of my old one - it was a 19 jewel version. It would be interesting to get the backs off.

Re: Seagull 1963: where to buy?

Hooray! Mine turned up today. :P

What a good-looking watch: I've had a hankering for an 'older-style' chrono for a while, but of course good vintage Swiss models are very expensive to buy (and can be even worse to service). I think a brown leather strap will be going on this one ...

I assume now, if I want to pick one up, I'm limited to waiting on the SC/ebay etc?
