***FORUM GOING OFFLINE TONIGHT - 28 JAN***

No, not permanently but while it's being moved onto another server, it's clear that the hosting plan I have is inadequate for the server load the forum is creating. I currently share a server with up to 800 other sites and am one of the largest users of resources on this server . The migration will start around 2300 hrs and could take up to 4 hours. The new server will be shared with not more than 20 other sites and should result in faster loading (and so it should for 5 times the cost of my current hosting).

It wasn't until I started to rebuild the search index today that I realised what a load the forum placed on the server; after more than 5 hours the re-indexing is less that 30% complete.

    Thanks for the heads-up, Eddie.

Out of curiosity, just how much does it cost to run a Forum like this, and how do you recoup it?

    Cheers,

    Luke

Just how thick can one be?? I hadn't realised that the forum was changing servers, or for that matter, suffering any problems.

After reading this, I have to say thanks Eddie. I know that you've been running this forum as a labour of love, because I honestly can't see that without advertising (thank god) it can possibly generate a profit for you.

The more expensive it get's, the more I'm sure we all appreciate it. All of us, especially we regular users of 'Sales Corner' owe you an huge vote of thanks, and if at some stage, something like a Paypal 'donate' button were to appear, I'm sure most of us would press it :D

    A million thanks!

It wasn't particularly suffering problems Doug but when I started rebuilding the search index yesterday, the forum was running slower and it also slowed down all the other sites sharing the server .

Now that the search index has been rebuilt, you can search for things like "Dreadnought" and "Speedbird" without getting the response "Word is too common so was ignored" although I suggest you add another qualifier to the search or you'll get more than 5000 results for each search  .

I don't want a submit button for me, if anyone wants to give any money then please give it to a worthwhile charity. I provide the forum as my thank you to all my loyal customers.

    Eddie
