Been looking at the Archimede myself since missing out one here in SC the other week.

They look great with the unbranded dial and blue hands

I would go for the Speedbird III


unsurpassed VFM ( far better than the Orfina)and it will easily fit in your budget (and leave some money for some nice other things (a strap or two?)

Have a look at Stowa.

I have everything crossed for a swing in the exchange rate so that the Airman Original comes back down a little and can be my next buy. Alternatively, the Airman auto without Logo looks a nice piece and at a converted price of about £550, isn't so bad price-wise.

Well... I'm still looking - but am getting drawn back to Stowa. and the euro rate has improved for us Brits, but i'd still like to see it around 1.20 - as it was beginning December..

Then I'd probably opt for the Auto Stowa..

Although theres always the Sinn 606
And Damasko DA36

But how easy are those to get hold of ??

For an auto i would go for the speedbird!

£500 gives loads of choice pre-owned especially from Fortis.
It might even get you (or very close to) a DA36 (only 40mm) if you're both patient & quick off the mark.

I'll second Andy's suggestion of a Fortis- I've a B-42, which might not be exactly what you're looking for and admittedly is 44mm, but was great value for money (under your £500 budget from a very nice chap on this forum) and has cracking legibility and presence.
