For FCUK Sake!
Someone was just asking what WIS stands for... this thread needs a bump ttt :)
This is excellent, now I can work out what people are saying to me...or calling me
a WIS is a watch enthusiast or collector... but what does it actually stand for?

Thanks guys...
I now see that it's on page one as well... so fully accept the 'I' piece is relevant to me on this occasion!

How about , MUG = Person who buys an ETA in a fancy case & box for 20 times more than it's actually worth.
I see what you're getting at but an ETA movement by itself doesnt tell the time very well. Hairs get in the mechanism for starters, and the sweat can make bits go all rusty :pukeleft:Originally Posted by CLOCKMAN

TTFN: Ta Ta For Now
PFC: Portsmouth Football Club or an abbreviation for something that appeared to be good once, but was really punching well above it's weight :( Probably a good idea to think well before investing a lot of emotional time in it! I'm sure you can suggest a similar timepiece.
When you really need a laugh, you can always look in the:
http://www.urbandictionary.com/popular.php?character=A
For example, I always wondered what a DILLIGAF was and after quick search on the Urban Dictionary I have been enlightened.
Have only just seem this, LOL! :-)Grail:
Brilliant watch for which I have been saving, and searching for years. It will be for sale next week.
Bump for the newbies :D
Good resource this - was wondering what WIS and wabi stood for
I second that, all those abbreviations are really hard to read when you're new.. :lol:Originally Posted by Hammerhead

A couple more that are popular here in the colonies......
DGAF - Don't Give A F**k
FIGJAM - F**k I'm Good, Just Ask Me
NAAFI - No Ambition And F**k-all Interest
I know, our vocabulary isn't that great
Great read, learned a lot.
I read somewhere that a beater can be descibed as FUBAR.
FUBAR = F**ked Up Beyond All Recognition
Brilliant post! had me laughing over the 9! pages
People are asking what WIS stands for... time for another bump :D

BOHICA (Bo-Hee-Kaa): to be used in reference for a repeat seller of substandard goods or items not as descibed. Can also be used to describe the situation when, through no fault of their own, a buyer has been supplied with substandard goods or items not as described on multiple occasions and finds difficulty in resolving the matter with vendor.
BOHICA- Bend Over, Here It Comes Again!
SNAFU (Sn-Ah-Foo): Accurate description of situation where members have not heeded warnings about repeat offenders/Vendors of substandard goods/watch repairers with little or no customer regard.
SNAFU- Situation Normal, All F**ked Up!
PPITA (P-Pi-Ta): A gentleman who extols the virtues of a certain 'Italian' watch company that produces fine watches to the cost of ALL other manufactures to such an extent that his presence in most watch discussions has no relevance and is not required.
PPITA- Panerai* Pain In The A*se
*The initial 'P' in PPITA may be discarded in favour of other letters eg: R=Rolex, B=Breitling, O=Omega, S=Seiko etc, dependant on context.
A new word I just heard today...........
Shonk - A broken willie
Anyone care to try to use it in a sentence??????
A gentle bump for our new arrivals.

Bumpette for the noobs :D
Dreadnought - A watch, but also the name used for the clock displayed to the top left of this screen. Be aware it takes time from YOUR computer, not the internet!
H O G
Horologically Obsessed Guy :D
I actually looked up OHPF earlier today, couldn't for the life of me guess what it was.
Should this be stickied?

Very helpful thankyou :)
Very useful read for a newbie like me..
...and not understanding half of these abbreviations makes you feel like a PEBKAC ? :bounce:
could this perhaps be sticky -ied? as a newbie i needed a couple of hints that are in this thread and its not easy to find, unless every newbie is enlightened to type 'glossary' into the search field (which i am obviously not and had to be directed to this from another thread).
LLYBAS - looks like you blew a seal - as in, your megabuck diver monstrosity is leaking in the shower... :)
I could well be missing the bleeding obvious but SOTC?
It's bugging the hell out of me having worked out so many other terms I see here.
State Of The Collection - a few people post updates of their watch collections - sometimes it's enlightening, sometimes it's mind-numbingly tedious.Originally Posted by thebuffoon
I wish I had found this years ago. I have slowly worked out pretty much all of them for myself, but when I first got here it was a bit like the opening chapters of A Clockwork Orange...

OP sometimes used in replies to threads on the forum?
I have always assumed it meant Original Poster but, having read some of the posts here, it could be much less complimentary!
An informative thread. Thanks.
thanks for this
Thank you very much. I was always wondering what NOS could mean....
