New Old Stock.
What's NOS?
And at the risk of being accused (correctly) of being a pedant, surely She Who Must Be Obeyed should be SWMBO, and not SHMBO?

Or Nearest Offer (OBO: Or Best Offer)
The word "who" is spelled, um, "who", not "hoo". So it is indeed SWMBO

NOS is short for New Old Stock in the watch world (amongs others), but although this term is supposed to mean something which is genuinely "new" ,"old", "stock", as in "never worn, never sold, but long departed from the price lists", it's been roundly abused to mean any old junk. "NOS, some scratches, with receipt" is amongst some of the most desperate crap I've read over the years :)

Otherwise, a watch that is caked with a thick layer of dried oil, dirt, dead skin, and other crud of unknown origin that should be soaked in bleach for 24 hour prior to handling.Originally Posted by Galea

A few days ago I was having some work done at my local garage. A blonde came in and asked for a seven-hundred-ten.
We all looked at each other, and another customer asked, "What is a seven-hundred-ten?"
She replied, "You know, the little piece in the middle of the engine. I lost it and need a new one. It had always been there."
The mechanic gave the blonde a piece of paper and a pen and asked her to draw what the piece looked like. She drew a circle and in the middle of it wrote 710.
He then took her over to another car which had the hood up and asked, "Is there a 710 on this car?"
She pointed and said, "Of course, it's right there." Click here to see the 710!

Excellent idea. My dictionary (a big one!) doesn't even have a definition for crown as applied to watches. Also I came across 'pheon' the other day. Fantastic word for the crow's foot military marking (I'd credit the person who posted that here if I could remember where I saw the post, but I'm sure you know who you are so thanks and well done.
AD was the one that took me ages to fathom when I first started browsing this forum. :)

Might it be an idea for this thread to be made permanent at the top of the forum? Save people like me asking questions which regular users find irritating.
