What are you doing for the new year?

Well this year i decided to go full blown and have a wild night out, UNTIL we found out a taxi was going to be £120 to Newcastle  and there was only going to be me and the GF, so fook that.
Sunderland is just no go on new years eve, so we decided to have a few friends over to her place.
    Whats everyone else doing then?
Ohhh and what watch will you be wearing?
I'll be wearing the Avenger Skyland.
    Thanks,
    Andrew

    Be staying in I think.

Over here in Yorkshire it's fight-night. Pay extortionate taxi prices, pay to get into places you usually don't pay, spend 30mins queuing at the bar and then end up in a fight with a kiddie who's night hasn't turned out how they planned.

Sounds exactly like Sunderland, just without the Guns and knives

What I've been doing for most free day/nights for God only knows how long: looking after my ill mother-in-law.

    Best wishes,

Round some friends for the night for a meal and then an evening playing random boardgames (to include the obligatory men vs. women Pictionary game). Not that interested in wild nights out, frankly.

I'll probably be undergoing transmogrification into an even grumpier old man as I commence yet another attempt to stop smoking.

You won't like me when I'm angry.

Just imagine or picture the inside of your lungs with smoke laden air and the hollow dripping sound of green coloured phlegm plus the eruption of same every now and again as you have a good cough ... and think back to when you were at school and learnt about Hookes Law ... and how a spring reaches its elastic limit ... And imagine what happens to your lungs when after all that coughing they eventually reach their elastic limit ... and cause emphysema and shortness of breath ... and resultant lack of oxygen in the bloodstream ... and thus in your muscles ...

And that is just ONE smoking related disease ...

Is it worth it? Do you really want to cut your life expectancy by 10 years?

if you can quit smoking you will probably feel like a new man and start looking much healthier and younger too and cease to think of yourself as a "grumpy old man"

    Cheers

Dinner with Beyonce Knowles, then a wild night with her in a hotel.

Or with a bit more reality, 20 of us going to Northwood Golf Club (no I am not a member - my intention is to take up golf when I am 93, I believe that is about the right age for that particular activity).

Re: What are you doing for the new year?

Going to my local for a "disco and bbq" with some good friends, one of which just happens to live 100 yards from the pub, so no expensive taxis required. They're charging £6 per ticket just to cover the food and the DJ and being, how shall we say, tucked out of the way somewhat, I don't anticipate the doors being closed....

The pub is roughly 300 years old and is in a lovely riverside location, and serves some great real ales from the cask...

Can't wait as should be a great night with all the regulars..including an old hippy who lives on one of the narrowboats and does a little bit of fire juggling when he's had a few... :D

Have a good time guys whatever you all get up to.

Off out for the first time on years!
My mate's got tickets for the local cricket club - live band, DJ, buffet and beer! :drunken:
Should be a good laugh - better than last year anyway when I spent it on the sofa with an ice pack and major pain killers due to wrecking my knee the day before :blackeye:
Have a good one guys!! :D

Re: What are you doing for the new year?

Off to some friends as usual...

    The hosts provide the food.

We take half a dozen bottles of champagne (my wife's various relatives come from the area and are producers).

Another couple do the beer/cider/etc and some port

Another couple do the white wine

Another couple do the red wine

Another couple get fireworks, cheese and silly drinks.

All in all we all spend about the same and have a great night :)

Re: What are you doing for the new year?

Staying in avoiding the overcrowded pubs, overcrowded (and lousy service) restaurants, overpriced taxies and obnoxious drunken women, (why are they ALWAYS worse than drunken men?).

That means I'll be enjoying some good beer, good wine, good whiskey, good food and good company well into the early hours of the morning. :D

Not made my mind up which watch yet, but likely the PRS-50.
    Best Regards - Peter

    Hi Mike,

No problem at all. If you ever find yourself in Bristol then please let me know, the 1st round's on me!

Myself & the good lady will be spending 3 days in Austria in June next year. We are going on another bike (motor not push) tour. This year we covered 13 different countries in a fortnight, but of all the places we visited we were blown away by Austria and Germany. The hospitality was out of this world (and the food and beer fantastic too).

So, yesterday afternoon I booked 4 hotels (2 in Germany, 1 in France and the other in Austria). So from the 16th to the 19th of June we will be staying at the Hotel Restaurant Seebichi, Seebichlweg 37, Kitzbuhel, 6370.

Is this anywhere near to you? Let me know and maybe we can have a beer somewhere.

    Steve.

Steve, I'm sure we can work something out! Just make sure to drop me a pm a few days before you leave!
Perhaps we could meet with Oli (Diverdan33), he's not too far away either (and he's got some niiiice watches) :-)

Re: What are you doing for the new year?

No particular plans. We'll probably stay at home, watch tv for the inevitable 'looking back at 2008' stuff and the great fireworks in Paris (where we aren't). A book, snacks, and of course champagne at midnight to celebrate that we have, again, survived another year without important mishaps and are not yet forced to sleep in a cardboard box...
In the first days of the new year we will, as is tradition in France, visit neighbours and friends to wish them a happy 2009 (people here also wait with sending off cards until the new year has truly began; maybe it's superstition...).
A few days later I will have to get serious about losing weight. :( Fuel consumption of my balloon is getting too high...
As for the watch: one of Eddies Ronda quartz-equipped models, either my usual PRS-10 or the PRS-4. On a festive orange TZ-UK Bond NATO.

In this thinly populated rural area there is, fortunately, hardly any fireworks, noisy rioting or similar stuff going on (setting off fireworks is prohibited in France for individuals; it's only for licenced professionals - so if any is being set off it's by a Dutch second-home owner). It will be dark and quiet, probably, while 2009 sneakily takes the place of 2008.

Just today I received a card from a designer I have worked with: night black on the outside with '2008', sunny print inside with the text 'Better Next Year'. I hope he will be right, but my confidence is not very high.

    I wish you all:
    - a roof over your head that is truly yours;
    - good health;
    - that you and your family may be well fed;
    - and that you may be surrounded by a decent handful of family and good friends.
If you have all that, as they say here, you are rich...

We are having some friends come to stay with us & going to a 'Murder/Mystery' evening at a local (& very good) pub. I'm driving & will be staying alcohol-free - apart from one glass of champers at midnight - as I don't really enjoy getting pissed-up much any more & watching the others do so is rather amusing..........

B-1 on my wrist tonight, so at least one reveller will know exactly when midnight strikes  - having said that we've got an extra second I believe?

Happy New Year to you all & I hope you all enjoy whatever you do tonight.

A dose of Night Nurse cold remedy please (Ive got man-flu) and at this rate, a dose of the Lithuanian vodka I was given for Xmas won't hurt.

    Then a long lie-in tomorrow...

Then I track down the pillock who decided to set my financial year end at 31 Dec and explain how the arrangement b*ggrs up my xmas break every year. Bah humbug!

A very happy, safe and successful 2009 to all TZ-UKers

    Regards

It turns out that I smoked a couple of cigars and read A.D. Nuttall's Shakespeare the Thinker, which was well worth the time spent.

    Happy New Year!

I'm working. Out of the past 11 New Years Eves, I've worked 10 of them and the one that I did have off, I watched my girlfriend sleep on the couch. I'm not bitching, mind you. I am extremely thankful and fully aware of just how lucky I am to be gainfully employed.

Good luck quitting, Eddie. I hope that you are ready to quit and find the strength and resolve to see it through to the end. If I can quit, anyone can. You just have to be ready.
