Very, very sad. And the day after Easter. RIP, Francis.

It’s always sad when someone passes away.

In his case, I’m curious to find out how long it will take before his passing away is linked -in a mythical way- to Easter.

The last who came to visit him. (Note the yellow tie and white shirt, the colours of the pope):

I know he was poorly but I wonder just how much yesterday’s events took out of him.

    Rest in peace Father.

My ex wife and I had a personal blessing from him (from vehicle)
in Rome in 2015 at one of his Thursday drive arounds.
A Swiss guard, for some unknown reason, ushered us through three sets of barriers and onto a corner of St Peter’s Sq, just the two of us.
I was looking at the big monitors of him in the pope mobile driving round and working out where he was.
I said to Trish, “I think he’s going to come round this corner”
With that, appeared he did, vehicle stopped and he blessed us both.

I’m left foot and was quite moved.
Ex is atheist and was sobbing !!

My partner and I watched him do Mass in St Peter’s Basiiica last year at Easter after she was granted tickets in the ballot, my partner is Catholic and it meant a lot to her.

Our tour guide of the Vatican said he was really sick then so he did well to last another year.

Hopefully they will go for someone younger in the vote…

What a lovely phrase. Thanks for sharing.

And may his holiness rest now in peace, and rise in eternal glory. Very sad given his determination and commitment to serve his people and faith to the very end on Easter Sunday, one of the most revered days in the catholic calendar.

Interesting that your ex was upset, do you mind if I ask why?

How do you infer that she was upset? People sob for many reasons. I presumed from the context that it was because she found it a moving experience.

    Not at all David,
It’s exactly as Mr C inferred,
It WAS a very moving encounter that was just for us,
There were thousands of people there but it was just for us.

In light of his death it means a bit more now.
I wonder if Trish thinks the same…

If I was at all religious, he'd be my type of priest. He travelled in the right direction. At that level, an increasingly lonely journey.

Thanks John that's really interesting. As an agnostic atheist myself I can't imagine being moved by that but something clearly struck a chord with her that maybe she wasn't aware of or expecting. I get how the experience means even more to you now. I remember my Dad, a practicing Catholic, requesting an audience with the Pope ahead of a visit to Rome. Having heard nothing before they left they did the trip as part of an extended holiday in Europe. When they got home there was a letter waiting for them granting the audience. He was pretty upset at having missed the opportunity.

As an atheist, I fundamentally disagree with all organised religion, but Francis did seem to be a good, sensible, peace-minded chap.

I hope the new pope is cut from similar cloth.

^^^ This ^^^ His only downside was that he rooted for the wrong national team (Argentina). But hey everybody makes mistakes. I do know that he had an interesting CV: nightclub bouncer and janitor. 'Standing with both feet on the ground' kind of man I hope that the new pope has some 'knowledge' like that as well.

I guess that no one takes this job lightly. One is elected by peers and I don't know if there's a possible "No, not me" option (Anyone knows that?).

As an 'aside': it's the Kings Day here on Saturday and there's a lot of back-and-forth in the media about who of the Royals here will be attending the funeral on Saturday.

As I understand it, and the selection is a very secretive process, the role has to be accepted and I’m sure the cardinals will know between them who has no interest in the ‘top job’ before any votes are cast.

Genuinely, IF I put aside my atheism and indulge in the magic friend idea, I cannot imagine the Pope of all people being anything but utterly fulfilled and never ever lonely...surely that must be the way of it for such a believer in the role for want of a better term...? Otherwise itīs a bunch of hogwash wrapped in meaningless tradition.

Worth watching Conclave if itīs of interest, apparently they got a lot of the details right.

Some good performances by Fiennes, Lithgow and Tucci ( no surprise really) make it worth watching, just about. Not as much fun as Jude Law in the Young Pope imo.

    Thanks for the heads up.

I came to think: he was on my virtual "Spend 24 hrs with ..."-list. Imho, a very interesting person who made decisions that changed his life.

Seems likely we'll have the first ever Asian pope next. The favourite for the job is a Filipino Cardinal.

In Italy the favourite is believed to be Pietro Parolin (35%) vs Fuque (25%).

    There's a saying:-

"He who enters the conclave as Pope, leaves as a cardinal"

    Apparently the favourite doesn't win.

I watched it. A good suggestion! Worth watching. Not only for the details of the Conclave but also for the story itself.

Firstly and most importantly, RIP Pope Francis.

I didn't follow his history as the Pope, but the fact that he requested a "Basic" coffin and asked for it to be placed on the ground, as MOP filed passed paying their respects, speaks volumes about the gentleman.

With regards to the film, I shall make a note to watch it within the next day or so.
