    As retirement beckons...

I've decided to have an initial cull of my current collection. Initial thoughts are that all of these will go over the coming weeks.

The next five will be far harder to pick, and will involve a little pain (so may well be delayed for a while, given that I don't need to sell them).

Any thoughts on the choices above?

Hi Tony. Congratulations on reaching a life phase when are in the “spending” rather than the “saving” phase of life. I hope you enjoy yourself and time with the family.

Personally, I would hesitate to sell any watches until I’ve sorted out any major lifestyle changes. You may find the “cheaper” watches suit you more than others. I would question why you want to sell as well (just my opinion).

But looking at that set and having to sell - I’d keep the Omega PO sell the rest.

What’s the objective of the cull?

Seems you have a serious collection and this looks like it reduces numbers but only releases a small percentage of the investment…

Thanks all. I just have too many watches to even rotate in any meaningful way. Agreed that I could liquidate more funds by selling others in my collection, but the process is more to make my collection manageable now.

If I were reducing the collection I’d start by thinning the most similar watches so that would be the Submariner / similar group.

You have 3 subs and SD, I’d chop two of them and one GMT.

I wouldn’t end up wearing any of the ones you have selected, so agree with the initial choices. Add the TT Submariner and GO to the sell list and you would be off to a good start.

The 5513 and 116600 would definitely be staying if I were you, so as mentioned would look at the similar watches to move on.

    Lovely collection by the way.

I think the GO is a keeper, actually. Probably right about the TT Sub though - or rather, that or the BLNR.

I would keep one Rolex (a sub), one Seiko, one G-Shock and the PanoInverse. That would cover divers, holidays, gardening and a dress watch/technical marvel.

Just because you are retiring why have less watches ?? You will have more time to indulge hobbies !
Having said that I am at the same life point and doing something similar. I am trying to consolidate from 13 down to 6. I hardly wear more than 3-4 of them in reality so having 13 was uncomfortable and just a waste so by consolidating I should be able to have a stunning 6. Overall about half way there for me.
Anyway my point is be clear reasons behind why you are doing the chop which is I think you are uncomfortable with so many watches not because of retirement otherwise you might start resenting the retirement ‘limiting’ you which is not a good spot to be in.

That's pretty much exactly what I said!

Since it's not about the money, I would draw up a strict rotation schedule and see how you feel about strapping on each watch on the day you are meant to wear it. If you feel less than enthusiastic on any day, then that's probably one for the chop.

Another way to do it would be to work through them with tosses of a coin. I'm each case: heads it stays, tails it goes. If you find yourself wanting to re-toss the coin at any point, then that possibly tells you something about how you really feel about that particular watch. If nothing else, it might be quite an entertaining exercise ...

I'm sure you love them all, but you must love some more than others!

I fear you may regret losing the tuna, you’ve been a big fan of them for a long time.

Do you have anything similar to the IWC? If not, I'd be keeping that on the basis of something different in rotation.

I was about to say the same. It’s probably the lowest value watch you own but you’ve always loved them. Great match day watch.

I’m sure whatever you decide will be right.

Is an active rotation that important? I have many watches that are hardly worn, but I still think they are great and don’t wish to sell them. It’s a personal thing. Once you require them to be in a regular rotation it becomes difficult when the numbers get above 5-6 watches.

    Of those choices:
Bother Seiko are straightforward sells as neither are IMHO the purist versions, ie the SBDX001 for the MM300 and SBBN007 or 7549 for a Tuna. Doxa is an interesting thing, but you can find it interesting without having to own it. I find the green IWC dial a bit trend following and as much as I like the PO, I think your Submariners are the icon.

Good luck with whatever you decide

    Dave

Ditch the unnecessary- the unworn, lighten the load, good move...best of luck.

All acceptable candidates for the cull except MM 300.

This makes sense to me but I'd go a step further. I operate a strict rotation and if I'm not GUTTED to have to put a watch back in the box after it's alloted wrist time it's up for replacement.

I'd ask myself why retirement beckoning would be the catalyst for this decision? If it's not for financial reasons.
How do you struggle to 'manage' your collection now and will fewer watches make it easier?

I'd guess it's just another step in our hobby of enjoying and collecting watches.
Lust after, collect, consolidate, grail, bored, add more, repeat.
Very extreme but maybe sell the lot and enjoy retirement with a new interest hobby to fulfil your TIME.
Enjoy whichever path you decide to take Tony

Tony - over the years you’ve tried to cull. Can’t see you being content with [emoji6] or [emoji[emoji6]] watches. You have worked hard for decades and your watch collection is part of that endeavour. Personally I would not link it to a life event such as retirement. See how you feel in a years time and how you wear the collection in the next chapter of your life. I have a funny feeling you are not done with commercial endeavours of some kind

Exciting times Tony! I’ve always loved pics of that PO version but it just does not sit well on my wrist so I’m just jealous you can pull it off.

You need a beater/under the radar watch so maybe one of these should stay, the tuna sounds good - the rest of your collection is far from under the radar! Intrigued to read about the next [emoji6]

Like others, Tony, I don’t necessarily see your retirement as an obvious reason to significantly reduce your collection size. Perhaps it’s more that you just
    want to change things up?

I’ve recently retired because of my wife’s health problems, and since then I have actually been seriously thinking about culling 3 or 4 of my collection (including watches I am very attached to), but only because I’ve recognised that there’s a watch I’ve wanted to own for years and life is too short not to pursue it!

Yeah, I’m wearing it today, and suspect it’s going to have to stay.

In the scheme of things, it is a rounding error vs the others.

Keep it and enjoy it. I never got on with them, but still miss them. Daft hobby this sometimes lol.

Strongly advise the OP not to sell any watches until the dust has settled on his change of circumstances, give it 6 months before making any decisions.

What’s the fun in that? Sell them and 6 months later buy some more it’s the fun of this hobby

    No!

His employment/ early retirement situation had changed significantly, that' s a major life change and it isn' t the right scenario for making knee- jerk decisions. If he sells these and regrets it he' ll end up buying them again with all the attendant risks that involves. If you class that as fun and part of the hobby we' ll agree to differ.

I was in a similar situation in 2014, serious health issues almost persuaded me to sell most of my collection, thankfully I didn' t, I' m still here and I still own the watches.

I' m trying to advise the guy and be helpful, I don't think flippant comments help him at all.

Hey it’s only watches I can’t see the harm, like I’ve said I’ve flipped nearly all of them watches including a black lung version of the doxa and had zero regrets, in fact I haven’t regretted selling anything once it’s gone

It all depends on how comfortable you are with your financial situation once you are out of the job. If you’re worried, by all means cash in. Your peace of mind is way more important than trinkets.
On the other hand, if you’re relatively serene about the next few months / years, take your time and only part with the ones you would have sold anyway.

My old Planet Ocean, I would keep that Tony, everyone needs a Sports watch.

The way the market is now, I'd not be selling at all unless I needed the cash.

Having retired just under a year ago, I'm also minded to reduce down my collection, but I'm in no rush.

I think that's where I've ended up, Andy. There really isn't any rush, so perhaps I'll just take some time before I decide on anything.
