Thread: Those aftermarket G-Shock metal cases...

    Those aftermarket G-Shock metal cases...

    These kind of things:

Anyone got one? Not really thinking of the "premium" titanium ones, more the cheapo steel (?) ones as pictured. Blue, maybe.

I am tempted for my DW-5600 as a bit of fun, but worried they might just be tat, despite the above claims of quality.

Bought one to replace a broken case on this....

And another because I fancied a metal case on a Casioak. Both cheap as chips off Aliexpress and both are ok for the money.
Started out with nothing. Still have most of it left.

I remember seeing that. And I like it too, but my humble DW costs much less than the Ti mods. So I was thinking of the cheap steel ones instead. If they are tat though, I might just change the bezel with a genuine Casio colour resin one.

TL;DR - I'm bored and have a few points with an online shop to spend. Not enough for anything grand. The steel bezel and bracelet mods are less than OEM resin equivalents, so I was tempted.

Looks fantastic. My metal G is a negative module, wish I had the standard one, looks so clear.

The negative is more tactical when tabbing to the FOB, Milton Keynes.

It is Walt spec battle worn.

At the time I sold the positive display and always missed it.

Expensive to buy another to rectify unless anyone wants a neg module.

I did this to my DW-5600 and I'm really happy with how it turned out:

I paid about £40 for the steel bracelet and case. It comes well packaged and with all the tools and bits and pieces necessary for installation. While the tools aren't great quality, they are sufficient for the job. Two screwdrivers are supplied, because for whatever reason it was decided that the new screws for attaching the case should be the flat-head type, while the original Casio ones that you have to take off are of the cross-head variety. Anyway, it was all very easy to install and resize the bracelet.

The quality of the case is very good. The bracelet, in contrast, feels a bit tinny when handling, but once on the wrist it wears fine. There's a nice heft to the watch now, which I like a lot. One thing I noticed at first was some hair pulling due to the gaps in the bracelet links, but that stopped happening after a short while.

If you can find a case that doesn't have the Casio branding, then well done! When I was looking, even the ones that--like in your picture--omitted the G-Shock logo were only that way for the marketing images; all the review photos had branding. So that's a downside if it's the sort of thing that bothers you.

Another thing I enjoyed about this little endeavour is the juxtaposition of taking a relatively cheap and unassuming watch and transforming it into something far more shouty and blingy, way beyond its wheelhouse. That's a fun aspect to it!

All in all, I'd recommend giving it a try. It's not a lot of money to completely change the humble DW-5600 into something very different. I'm less sure about recommending the colourful ones (on grounds of taste if nothing else! ) as I've no idea about how the colour is applied and its longevity. But apart from that, I'd say go for it, and I'll be interested to see what it turns out like if you do go for the blue!

    Quality is perfectly ok.

Modded my 5610 with a black distressed look.

Arrived with G-Shock lettering etc,but not on the one on the website!.....as mentioned.

I've had a couple of the Ti lits for the GMW-B5000. Very impressed with the quality although they're a bit more expensive than the steel ones.

Many thanks for the detailed replies and pictures. The ones I see for sale here (online) do not show the G Shock branding. I'd be unhappy receiving one that did, to be honest. So I think I may pass. Although, looking at online reviews here, the amateur "customer pictures" also do not show the branding. Either paid-for / shill reviews, or perhaps some vendors do ship the unbranded ones?

    Explorer still on the go?

I found one without branding and took the plunge. It's aluminium, so quite light. And not shiny:

The main parts, with the patient:

It's quick to change over. Albeit, the usually struggle with the (quick release) spring bars.

The supplied screwdriver and split-pin pusher were land-fill quality. Truly, awful. The bezel screws were longer than the originals. They work, but I am not sure that they haven't made a deeper hole in the case. And they are flat-head.

Having said all that, the kit cost less than £40, and I like it.

Looks very futuristic from the late 1980’s! Cool.
