    Internet Speed - 500mb or 1Gb ?

    Hi Peeps

Bit if a query that I wondered if anyone can advise?

I’m currently with Virgin Media and have 500mbs with an upload of 52 mbs. However they have offered 1Gb with an upload of 104mbs as part of a renewal.

Whilst it’s only another £4 a month am I really going to notice the difference?

I don’t game, but do work from home (general admin tasks) and the children play the odd online games and steam Netflix and Amazon etc.

I have a TP mesh system that’s been bombproof and works a charm.

I’m bit of an old fart in these matters as I once celebrated the fact that my broadband increased from 28k to 52k back in the day when BT increased the gain on the line.

No complaints with VM as I’ve been with them for almost 5 years.

    Thanks in advance

    B

Given the usage you've described you won't see any difference. Your current speeds are more than enough, save your money

For £4 I would probably do it but I can’t see you noticing the change even once, let alone on WiFi.

A 1gig connection would allow 40 streams at full 4k

I’ve got 67 Meg, BT tried to flog me fibre to the premises but what’s the point? I can do everything I want to with what I’ve got.

500 mb is plenty. To get that speed over wifi you have to be in the same room or have repeater/mesh network in your house. I have 1Gb and can't get more than 600mb standing next to router.

We’ve got 720mbps both download and upload and to be honest see very little difference from when we upgraded from 64mbps a few months ago, that’s with 2 constantly gaming while using their phones and iPads while the other half sits infont of Netflix's all evening and is on her phone.

I was on 500mb and reduced down to 350mb during the last negotiations.

We have two teenagers who stream a lot, some PS4 gaming and I work from home most days.

We haven't noticed any change except for my lower bill each month.

When I moved to my home 3 years ago, BT offered me 1mb, I’m more than happy with my current 32mb.

Openreach have recently put fibre overhead on the main road and to mine as an offshoot, waiting contact regarding upgrades.

It would be like upgrading a three lane motorway to a six lane motorway, but still only driving two cars along it.

Unless you're regularly downloading large files, it'll make no difference.

I have 1.2Gbps mean and 1.9Gbps peak here, but the only time I see the full potential is when I download operating system installers (18GB takes around 2 minutes), which I do regularly. Other than that there's little to show for that speed.

If you are a spider and watch 8 TV shows at once you are still good with 500mb.

Thanks all for your replies. Very informative.

Clearly there is very little benefit in upgrading to 1 GB. I’ll stick with the 500 GB.

    Thanks again

    Too flipping right!

Gigabroadband and all that, above 100Mb is a con.
Of course, in the future we might need these speeds, but unless you are running a TV station from your home, leave it.

We have 46mb, and four heavy streamers in the house AND my son is a serious Fortnite gamer. No issues.

I’m rural and we typically get about 20mbps. We do all the things you describe.

    The upgrade would be pointless.

Correct decision, I took the offer a few months ago and there really isn't much difference.

Plus you need to upgrade Virgins router at a cost of 35 quid

We have about 35mb. I think that's all we can get no matter what speed we opt for without upgrading cables to fibre.

Looking to switch to a new contract at the moment but all prices go up in April. Seems pointless getting a new contract now only for it to go up in 2 months.

It's annoying most contacts are now 2 years. That's a hell of a long time.

I have 500 mbps on Zen FTTP. It is enough for anything I do, and get 500 on all cat 6 cabled rooms, plus 150-350 by WiFi according to different areas.

I have been told that most TV stream at 100-120 max, so plenty bandwidth for any application.

I have the same package with Zenn. Our 4k Sky box shows as being connected at FE which is a 100Mbs limit vs the 1,000Mbs router it’s connected to.

4k is 25Mbs so easily enough. I might even downgrade at renewal depending on the deal at the time.

Did they offer you a discount on your current speed? If not make sure you get a better deal. And don’t be afraid to threaten to leave . They will always come back to you with a better deal.

Yes the renewal price was 129 with TV. After going around the houses and removing TNT Sport I’m now paying 42.50 but this goes up to 46 from April for 18 months.
I’m happy with this price but am as always, disappointed that I had to have several conversations with various departments!

VM seem to be slashing prices at the moment - We went from £137 to £71 with 500MB, although not as good a deal as yours.

With the demise of Eurosport, we've added TNT Sports for a try (rolling 30 day contract) at £12 a month.

I renewed 3 months ago for £49 including TNT (a must-have for me) and 350mb internet.

It goes up in April by the usual scam calculation of RPI + 3.7% or whatever it is. Still cheaper than it would have been if I hadn't called and threatened to leave.

From next renewal VM will have to state an actual price increase rather than RPI and %. No such thing as a fixed price contract anymore.
