    Sea dweller values

Is it me or have the values of 90s sea dwellers dropped?

Change one of the few constants...A trillion wiped off US tech companies, poof!...I read the other day that even Diamonds have slumped, losing around a quarter of their value.

I think they present great value. The best horological engineering that Rolex could offer, extensively ‘field’ tested by commercial divers, whilst remaining both iconic in design and highly wearable. Many Rolexes have come and gone, but the 16600 has stayed and remains a near daily wearer.

I found the 16600 a little heavy so when I decided to sell one of my two Rolex watches, it was the 16710 GMT which stayed.

I would definitely consider buying another one though.

The later 116600 is probably the perfect one - ceramic bezel. However I did find it a bit too heavy and as a consequence a bit shouty - I suppose if you have a larger wrist ymmv.

I wouldn’t say the prices have dropped – they’ve more or less stabilized. The Sea-Dweller (SD) was never a huge seller. For the average buyer looking for a Submariner, 99% of the time, they’d choose the Sub. The SD was thicker, heavier, more expensive, and its extreme depth rating just didn’t make sense for most. However, it’s a true enthusiast’s watch, designed for harsh underwater conditions and built like a tank.
I’ve been watching the SD market for six months now, and while prices are slowly falling, it’s nothing dramatic. Interestingly, the Sub is still more expensive, which I find crazy. The SD has a much cooler story factor and is far rarer compared to models like the 5513 or 14060.

I was offered an OK price on a trade in last week but still a bit less than I paid in August (unworn/stickered at the time 2020 126600 model). Have kept an eye on prices but probably hang on to mine. I think it was fantastic value and still do but was exploring moving on as wanted funds to buy the mrs a watch.

Market definitely had a big reset.

Back when these were much cheaper and readily available I had a Seadweller and a
Submariner in rotation, and despite having large wrists I found the Seadweller wore too small due to its noticeably smaller diameter dial and crystal. Being a little thicker also made it taller which for me wasn’t a great combination. Of course the extra depth rating was also of zero consequence so even though I had a couple they never lasted long.

Yesterday an acquaintance who is almost a friend offered me his 116600 SD dated 2017 which was serviced by Rolex two years ago and hasent been worn since so like new. He has mislaid the service paperwork and the box and papers are in another country (he lives between two countries as his wife is not British) I remember him getting it and showing me at the time.

The watch looks like new and a perfect buy, he has asked me to make an offer, what price ?

Update: I have made my offer and its been accepted so I will see what happens now, due to his work we are unable to complete until next week, so............

Good luck with the deal. One of the best SD I think. Shame about the loss of papers but if you can get to RSJ I think they could check the provenance for you via their database? Does he still have any spare link? Maybe factor that to any offer.

Thanks, we have arranged to meet Thursday, he dident mention any spare links but I would imagine they would be in the box abroad, he thinks he has the Rolex service box but not the paperwork.

It all seems a bit too good too be true and if I was dealing with someone I dident know I would not consider carrying on with the deal, but...................

    Seadwellers

IMHO with the Sub non-date and these are the best watches Rolex make in all but the cyclops SD serials.
I would rank my favourites as the 1665, 16600 and 116600. Then they went a little sideways. Always a little special with their engraved case backs and lower production numbers. Almost the Moon watch of the sea.

cracking watch! Best iteration of the SD I think - all the good bits in the size of the old one - and a transitional model so will (most likely) keep its value. Enjoy!
