Home and Contents Insurance - HELP !!!

So my Renewal has just come through . Premium has been increased by 50% !!!!

Premium has gone from £1194 last year to £1741 . This is with M&S Home Insurance the Premium policy that I have used for the last 5 or 6 years . Incidentally a recommendation that was on this forum .

Obviously I have a fairly big house 5 bedrooms and a watch collection with jewellery . 2 watches and a diamond ring insured outside the home limit 15k . One and only claim over 2 years ago - burglary claim approx 5k .

I really can't see how this can be justified , premium in 2020 was £562 , It seems Car Insurance has gone substantially this year so how come ?

Does anybody have any suggestions for other companies giving better value for the same conditions please ?

Start a fresh new quote with M&S and you might be surprised. I’ve had to do that previously to get back to the normal price. Even after calling the provider, they have said to just go with the new quote.

Otherwise, also try one of the comparison sites but unsure if M&S is on them.

If you do start a fresh quote, use a different email address…

Always get quotes 21-25 days before the new policy starts.

Mine's due in February so that's something to look forward to

The claim wiped out 5 years of premiums and presumably put you in a higher risk bracket, I'm surprised it didn't jump up sooner!

I just had my renewal from M&S which had gone from £500 to £742. I did a comparison quote and ended up with Tesco £487 with watches and jewellery added as items

Unfortunately, Household & Contents claims tend to be more expensive, especially if its due to Burglary.

We've had a couple of bad winters with storms and flooding and this year looks to be heading the same way, so numbers of claims are up, along with the value of claims that are made.

This has increased premiums considerably accross the board as insurers have to re balance their books.

Talking to a specialist broker this week they're saying that it lookslike the market will be staying like this for at least the next couple of years.

The US Insurance market has been similarly effected with insurers pulling out of certain areas (Florida) due to hurricanes and theres dicsussion of how long insurers will continue to write home insurance in California due to the large numbers of wildfires in the last couple of years.

Trouble is with that all your nice stuff if out of reach … so are you getting any pleasure from it?

Is the box insured or is the assumption that it’s 100% safe?

The below text is from the Metro Bank page.

    Things to keep in mind

Your valuables will be safe and sound in your Safe Deposit Box, but you still need to make sure they’re properly insured to their full value.

Okay, the box is in a location we frequent every week so I just drop in and swap watches round, likewise with wifey’s watches and gems.

There is insurance included to a level and we just add a layer policy for the additional cover.

For us this was the only solution and we have a fireproof safe at home.

Not everyone’s cuppa but it is nice not having my collection at home.

Sounds like a good set up, handy to have such a facility nearby.

I use Select Premier Insurance from Direct Line.
Just had renewal letter through premium this year is £1840.93 up from £1783.91 last year.
Didn’t think it was an unreasonable increase. At the end of the day I think it’s better to have as much cover as possible.
Started out with nothing. Still have most of it left.

£.[emoji[emoji6]]k pa, madness. I looked into SDBs but the additional insurance up to £[emoji6][emoji[emoji6][emoji6]]k was £k pa. Not worth it for me.

    =

£1.8k pa, madness. I looked into SDBs but the additional insurance up to £250k was £2k pa. Not worth it for me.

Direct Line have had lots of problems, and increased many customers premiums by a lot more than that so you are pretty fortunate.

They have just been taken over by Aviva so you will be an Aviva customer some time this year.

Also with M&S and had to deal with heavy increases last two years.

Didn't realise that this was still a think. I had thought insurers now are supposed to offer existing customers the same prices as new, or am I missing something? Is that car insruance only? Anybody know the rules on this?

Presumably the cover I have will remain the same.
If it changes drastically next year in terms of cover or premium I guess we’ll have to look around again.
Nobody likes paying insurance premiums but when you need it the original premium seems a distant memory.

Honestly i think it’s simple never auto renew and always look around before the renewal date i think it’s called doing the dance.I was also an M&S customer but now Aviva due to the last proposed increase.

It started with a comic reference to your premium costs, which seem incredibly high. I have no further point to make.

Do you sometimes find yourself shouting at your own reflection in shop windows?

So high they are nearly the same as the OP's. And they were actually the lowest I could find which still gave the cover I wanted.

And no I don't shout at my reflection in shop windows, I'm normally too busy admiring my impeccable dress code and sartorial elegance.

Only with the OP's recent renewal hike.

Last year he paid £1194 and you paid £1783, £589 more than the OP, so to me, your premium is substantially more.

This year there is more parity with yours and the OP's premium, unless he shops around and finds cover more in line with his premium last year.

    Agreed?

I don't know what value of watches, jewellery etc are included in the OPs premium so it's impossible to tell. He may have paid less partly because he lives in an area deemed less risky than my village. It may also be that the premium he paid last year was reasonable for the value of contents and buildings insurance, but this year is unreasonable if nothing else has changed. I tried a lot of companies when I was renewing last year and the one I used was the most reasonably priced for the level of cover. And that is with safes, an alarm and CCTV installed.

Unless all the cover and risks were identical then trying to say I paid too much is just nonsensical. The OP states that he has '2 watches and a diamond ring insured outside the home limit 15k', suffice to say I have a bit more covered than that.

Again I don't know what point you're trying to make?

FFS. We're back to the reflection in the shop window.

The only point I was making was that your premium was high compared to say, mine. I wasn't saying you were paying too much, just that it was a lot of coin.

The day I start getting quotes of over £1k insurance every year is the day I reconsider what possessions I really want in my house.

I'm out now so anything you reply will be considered final

M&S Home insurance is underwritten by Aviva anyway. I moved from M&S to Aviva mid last year and got a very similar quote, in terms of cover, cheaper. The main different was the valuables part in that M&S did not need them documented whereas Aviva did for individual items. Which is a slight pain and less flexible but I saved money overall.

Didn't think there would be anymore replies after my posted thanks , so only just read again .

For information , the jewellery outside the home is 50k total with maximum of 15k for anyone article .

Using the Stealth modes advised by previous posters I received a quote of £250 less with M & S puzzling as I thought it was against consumer law to quote lower for new customers .
