    Your favourite lyrics?

Really tough deciding this as have so many favourites, Strange town the Jam, Strawberry Fields For Ever The Beatles etc but I’m going to go with The Rain Song Led Zeppelin, Roberts masterpiece.
    I’ll be in your choices

It is the springtime of my loving
The second season I am to know
You are the sunlight in my growing
So little warmth I've felt before
It isn't hard to feel me glowing
I watched the fire that grew so low, oh
It is the summer of my smiles
Flee from me, keepers of the gloom
Speak to me only with your eyes
It is to you, I give this tune
Ain't so hard to recognize, oh
These things are clear to all from time to time, ooh
    Oh, oh
    Oh
    Talk, talk, talk, talk
Hey, I felt the coldness of my winter
I never thought it would ever go
I cursed the gloom that set upon us, 'pon us, 'pon us
But I know that I love you so
    Oh, but I know
    That I love you so
These are the seasons of emotion
And like the wind, they rise and fall
This is the wonder of devotion
    I see the torch
    We all must hold
This is the mystery of the quotient, quotient
Upon us all, upon us all, a little rain must fall
Just a little rain, oh, yeah
    Oh, ooh, yeah-yeah-yeah

This sums up why I like much of Echo & the Bunnymen

    The sky seems full
    When you're in the cradle
    The rain will fall
    And wash your dreams

    Stars are stars
    And they shine so hard

Now you spit out the sky
    Because it's empty and hollow
    All your dreams
    Are hanging out to dry

    Stars are stars
    And they shine so cold

    I saw you climb
    Shadows on the trees
    We lost some time
    After things that never matter

    I caught that falling star
It cut my hands to pieces

    Stars are Stars (1980)

Surf's Up by the Beach Boys. Lyrics by Van Dyke Parks.

A diamond necklace played the pawn
Hand in hand some drummed along, oh
To a handsome man and baton
    A blind class aristocracy
Back through the opera glass you see
The pit and the pendulum drawn
    Columnated ruins domino

Canvass the town and brush the backdrop
    Are you sleeping?

    Hung velvet overtaken me
    Dim chandelier awaken me
To a song dissolved in the dawn
The music hall a costly bow
The music all is lost for now
    To a muted trumpeter swan
    Columnated ruins domino

Canvass the town and brush the backdrop
    Are you sleeping, Brother John?

Dove nested towers the hour was
    Strike the street quicksilver moon
    Carriage across the fog
Two-Step to lamp lights cellar tune
The laughs come hard in Auld Lang Syne

The glass was raised, the fired rose
The fullness of the wine, the dim last toasting
While at port adieu or die

A choke of grief heart hardened I
Beyond belief a broken man too tough to cry

    Surf's up
    Aboard a tidal wave
    Come about hard and join
The young and often spring you gave
    I heard the word
    Wonderful thing
    A children's song

    Child, child, child, child, child
A child is the father of the man
    Child, child, child, child, child
A child is the father of the man
    A children's song
Have you listened as they played
    Their song is love
And the children know the way
That's why the child is the father to the man
    Child, child, child, child, child
    Child, child, child, child, child
Na na na na na na na na
    Child, child, child, child, child
That's why the child is the father to the man
    Child, child, child, child, child

Almost anything by Jason Isbell is on my list, but Songs That She Sang in the Shower is a masterpiece, as is Cover Me Up.

    On a lark
    On a whim
I said there's two kinds of men in this world and you're neither of them
    And his fist
    Cut the smoke
I had an eighth of a second to wonder if he got the joke

    And in the car
    Headed home
She asked if I had considered the prospect of living alone
    With a steak
    Held to my eye
I had to summon the confidence needed to hear her goodbye
And another brief chapter without any answers blew by

And the songs that she sang in the shower
    Are stuck in my head
    Like "Bring Out Your Dead"
    "Breakfast In Bed"
And experience robs me of hope
That she'll make it back home
So I'm stuck on my own
    I'm stuck on my own

    In a room
    By myself
Looks like I'm here with a guy that I judged worse than anyone else
    So I pace
    And I pray
And I repeat the mantra's that might keep me clean for the day

And the songs that she sang in the shower all ring in my ear
    Like "Wish You Were Here"
How I wish you were here.

And experience robs me of hope
    That you'll ever return
So I breathe and I burn
    I breathe and I burn

And the church bells are ringing for those who are easy to please
And the frost on the ground probably envies the frost on the trees.

And the songs she sang in the shower are stuck in my mind
Like "Yesterday's Wine", like yesterday's wine

And experience tells me that I'll never hear them again
    Without thinking of then
    Without thinking of then

    Here you go.

    I looked to the sky
    Where an elephant's eye
    Was looking at me
    From a bubblegum tree
    And all that I knew
    The hole in my shoe
Was letting in water (letting in water)
    I walked through a field
    That just wasn't real
    Where a hundred tin soldiers
    Would shoot at my shoulder
    And all that I knew
    The hole in my shoe
Was letting in water (letting in water)
(I climbed on the back of a giant albatross
Which flew through a crack in the cloud
To a place where happiness reigned all year round
Where music played ever so loudly)
    I started to fall
    And suddenly woke
And the dew on the grass
    It stuck to my coat
    And all that I knew
    The hole in my shoe
Was letting in water (letting in water)

    Your favourite lyrics?

Perhaps not what you’d expect of me, and I don’t understand why this stirs me. I also feel I’ve known the girl(s)..

“Dry your eyes mate” - The Streets

In one single moment, your whole life can turn 'round
I stand there for a minute, staring straight into the ground
Lookin' to the left slightly, then lookin' back down
The world feels like it's caved in, proper sorry frown
Please let me show you where we could only just be for us
I can change, and I can grow, or we could adjust
The wicked thing about us is we always have trust
We can even have an open relationship if you must
… I look at her, she stares almost straight back at me
But her eyes glaze over, like she's looking straight through me
Then her eyes must have closed for what seems an eternity
When they open up she's looking down at her feet
    … Dry your eyes, mate
I know it's hard to take, but her mind has been made up
There's plenty more fish in the sea
    Dry your eyes, mate
I know you want to make her see how much this pain hurts
But you've got to walk away now, it's over
… So then I move my hand up from down by my side
Shaking, my life is crashing before my eyes
I turn the palm of my hand up to face the skies
Touch the bottom of her chin and let out a sigh
'Cause I can't imagine my life without you and me
    There's things I can't imagine doing, things I can't imagine seeing
It weren't supposed to be easy, surely
Please, please, I beg you, please
… She brings her hand up towards where my hands rested
She wraps her fingers 'round mine with the softness she's blessed with
She peels away my fingers, looks at me and then gestures
By pushing my hand away to my chest, from hers
    … Dry your eyes, mate
I know it's hard to take, but her mind has been made up
There's plenty more fish in the sea
    Dry your eyes, mate
I know you want to make her see how much this pain hurts
But you've got to walk away now, it's over
… And I'm just standing there
    I can't say a word
    'Cause everything's just gone
    I've got nothing
    Absolutely nothing
… Trying to pull her close out of bare desperation
Put my arms around her, trying to change what she's saying
Pull my head level with hers, so she might engage and
Look into her eyes to make her listen again
I'm not gonna fuckin' just fuckin' leave it all now
'Cause you said it'd be forever and that was your vow
And you're gonna let our things simply crash and fall down?
You're well out-of-order now, this is well out of town
… She pulls away my arms that tightly clamp around her waist
Gently pushes me back as she looks at me straight
Turns around so she's now got her back to my face
Takes one step forward, looks back, and then walks away
    … Dry your eyes, mate
I know it's hard to take, but her mind has been made up
There's plenty more fish in the sea
    Dry your eyes, mate
I know you want to make her see how much this pain hurts
But you've got to walk away now, it's over
… I know in the past I've found it hard to say
Telling you things, but not telling straight
But the more I pull on your hand and say
    The more you pull away
    … Dry your eyes, mate
I know it's hard to take, but her mind has been made up
There's plenty more fish in the sea
    Dry your eyes, mate
I know you want to make her see how much this pain hurts
But you've got to walk away now

And though your dreams may toss and turn you now
They will vanish away like your dads best jeans
Denim blue, faded up to the sky
And though you want them to last forever
    You know they never will
    You know they never will
And the patches make the goodbye harder still

    Cat Stevens, Oh Very Young.

Whole song reminds me of stuff from the band "America" - where I'm convinced it's just a jumble of words................

That whole album (A Grand Don't Come For Free) was epic. All the tracks led into each other all and added to one big story and it meshed perfectly. Original Pirate material was utterly brilliant, this record came along and it was a completely different beast but equally as good.

Drugs don't work - The Verve

All this talk of getting old
It's getting me down, my love
Like a cat in a bag, waiting to drown
    This time I'm coming down
And I hope you're thinking of me
As you lay down on your side
    Now the drugs don't work
They just make you worse but I know I'll see your face again
    Now the drugs don't work
    They just make you worse
But I know I'll see your face again
But I know I'm on a losing streak
As I pass down by your street
And if you wanna show, then just let me know
And I'll sing in your ear again
    Now the drugs don't work
    They just make you worse
But I know I'll see your face again
    'Cause baby, oh
If heaven falls, I'm coming too
    Just like you said
You leave my life, I'm better off dead
All this talk of getting old
It's getting me down, my Lord
Like a cat in a bag, waiting to drown
    This time I'm coming down
    Now the drugs don't work
They just make you worse but I know I'll see your face again
    'Cause baby, oh
If heaven falls, I'm coming too
    Just like you said
You leave my life, I'm better off dead
    But if you wanna show
Then just let me know and I'll sing in your ear again
    Now the drugs don't work
They just make you worse but I know I'll see your face again
Yeah, I know I'll see your face again
Yeah, I know I'll see your face again
Yeah, I know I'll see your face again, oh, Lord
Yeah, I know I'll see your face again, oh, Lord
I'm never coming down now, I'm never coming down
No more, no more, no more, no more, no more
I'm never coming down now, I'm never coming down
No more, no more, no more, no more, no more
I'm never coming down now, I'm never coming down
No more, no more, no more, no more, no more
I'm never coming down now, I'm never coming down
No more, no more, no more, no more, no more
I'm never coming down now, I'm never coming down
No more, no more, no more, no more, no more, no more

    Bowie's Five years.

Woody Woodmansy's haunting drum beat, which he created on the spot during the recording sessions, ties the whole thing together beautifully.

    Pushing through the market square
    So many mothers sighing (sighing)
    News had just come over
We had five years left to cry in (cry in)
News guy wept and told us
    Earth was really dying (dying)
Cried so much his face was wet
Then I knew he was not lying (lying)
I heard telephones, opera house, favorite melodies
I saw boys, toys, electric irons and TV's
My brain hurt like a warehouse, it had no room to spare
I had to cram so many things to store everything in there
And all the fat, skinny people
And all the tall, short people
    And all the nobody people
    And all the somebody people
I never thought I'd need so many people
A girl my age went off her head
    Hit some tiny children
If the Black hadn't have pulled her off
I think she would have killed them
A soldier with a broken arm
Fixed his stare to the wheels of a Cadillac
A cop knelt and kissed the feet of a priest
And a queer threw up at the sight of that
I think I saw you in an ice-cream parlor
Drinking milk shakes cold and long
Smiling and waving and looking so fine
Don't think you knew you were in this song
And it was cold and it rained, so I felt like an actor
And I thought of Ma and I wanted to get back there
Your face, your race, the way that you talk
I kiss you, you're beautiful, I want you to walk
We've got five years, stuck on my eyes
    Five years, what a surprise
We've got five years, my brain hurts a lot
Five years, that's all we've got
We've got five years, what a surprise
Five years, stuck on my eyes
We've got five years, my brain hurts a lot
Five years, that's all we've got
We've got five years, stuck on my eyes
    Five years, what a surprise
We've got five years, my brain hurts a lot
Five years, that's all we've got
We've got five years, what a surprise
We've got five years, stuck on my eyes
We've got five years, my brain hurts a lot
Five years, that's all we've got
    Five years
    Five years
    Five years
    Five years

So many great ones poetic, whimsical, intellectual, stirring, clever or ones that just make you smile.

"Well, I'm a-standin' on a corner in Winslow, Arizona
Such a fine sight to see
It's a girl, my Lord, in a flatbed Ford
Slowin' down to take a look at me"

    WAR PIGS?

    Generals gathered in their masses
Just like witches at black masses
    Evil minds that plot destruction
    Sorcerer of death's construction
In the fields the bodies burning
As the war machine keeps turning
    Death and hatred to Mankind
    Poisoning their brainwashed minds...
    Oh Lord yeah!

    Politicians hide themselves away
    They only started the war
Why should they go out to fight?
They leave that role to the poor

Time will tell on their power minds
    Making war just for fun
Treating people just like pawns in chess
Wait 'till their judgment day comes, yeah!

Now in darkness, world stops turning
    Ashes where the bodies burning
No more war pigs have the power
Hand of God has struck the hour
Day of Judgment, God is calling
On their knees the war pigs crawling
    Begging mercy for their sins
    Satan, laughing, spreads his wings...
    Oh Lord, yeah!

Some folks are born made to wave the flag
Hoo, they're red, white and blue
And when the band plays "Hail to the chief"
Ooh, they point the cannon at you, Lord
It ain't me, it ain't me
    I ain't no senator's son, son
It ain't me, it ain't me
I ain't no furtunate one, no
Some folks are born silver spoon in hand
Lord, don't they help themselves, Lord?
But when the taxman come to the door
Lord, the house lookin' like a rummage sale, yeah
It ain't me, it ain't me
    I ain't no millionaire's son, no, no
It ain't me, it ain't me
I ain't no fortunate one, no
Yeah-yeah, some folks inherit star-spangled eyes
Hoo, they send you down to war, Lord
And when you ask 'em, "How much should we give?"
Hoo, they only answer, "More, more, more, more"
It ain't me, it ain't me
I ain't no military son, son, Lord
It ain't me, it ain't me
I ain't no fortunate one, one
It ain't me, it ain't me
I ain't no fortunate one, no, no, no
It ain't me, it ain't me
I ain't no fortunate son, no, no, no
It ain't me, it ain't me...

Two songs from the album Dusk by The The

    True Happiness This Way Lies

"Hey man, I got what you need!"
And have you ever wanted something so badly
That it possessed your body and your soul
Through the night and through the day
    Until you finally get it
And then you realize that it wasn't what you wanted after all
And then those selfsame sickly little thoughts
Now go and attach themselves to something or somebody new
And the whole goddamn thing starts all over again

Well, I've been crushing the symptoms
But I can't locate the cause
Could God really be so cruel?
To give us feelings that could never be fulfilled

Baby, I've got my sights set on you, I've got my sight set on you
And someday, someday, someday, you'll come my way
But when you put your arms around me
I'll be lookin' over your shoulder for somethin' new

Cause I ain't ever found peace upon the breast of a girl
I ain't ever found peace with the religion of the world
I ain't ever found peace at the bottom of a glass

Sometimes it seems the more I ask for, the less I receive
Sometimes it seems the more I ask for, the less I receive
The only true freedom is freedom from the heart's desires
And the only true happiness this way lies

    Bluer Than Midnight

Save me, save me, save me
Save me, save me, save me

The candles are lit, the curtains are drawn
There's still no sign of rain nor dawn
Our lips touch, our limbs entwine
But the ghosts that haunt me won't leave my mind

Save me, save me, save me
Save me, save me, from myself

One sin leads to another one
    Oh, the harder I try
I can never, never, never find peace in this life
I ask myself where does lust come from
Is it something to yield to or be overcome
    I ask myself

They sat together in the park
As the evening sky grew dark
She looked at him and he felt a spark
    Tingle to his bones
    'Twas then he felt alone
And wished that he'd gone straight
And watched out for a simple twist of fate

They walked alone by the old canal
A little confused, I remember well
And stopped into a strange hotel
    With a neon burning bright
He felt the heat of the night
Hit him like a freight train
Moving with a simple twist of fate

A saxophone someplace far off played
As she was walking on by the arcade
As the light bust through a beat up shade
    Where he was waking up
She dropped a coin into the cup
Another blind man at the gate
And forgot about a simple twist of fate

He woke up, the room was bare
    He didn't see her anywhere
He told himself he didn't care
    Pushed the window open wide
    Felt an emptiness inside
To which he just could not relate
Brought on by a simple twist of fate

He hears the ticking of the clocks
And walks along with a parrot that talks
Hunts her down by the waterfront docks
Where the sailors all come in
Maybe she'll pick him out again
    How long must he wait?
One more time for a simple twist of fate

People tell me it's a sin
To know and feel too much within
I still believe she was my twin but I lost the ring
    She was born in spring
But I was born too late
Blame it on a simple twist of fate

Shane Macgowan - The body of an American

"This morning on the harbour, when I said goodbye to you
I remember how I swore that I'd come back to you one day
And as the sunset came to meet, the evening on the hill
I told you I'd always love you, I always did, I always will"

/\ love Simple Twist of Fate

    Here’s one of mine

I come from down in the valley
    Where, mister, when you're young
They bring you up to do like your daddy done
Me and Mary we met in high school
    When she was just seventeen
We drive out of this valley
Down to where the fields were green
We'd go down to the river
And into the river we'd dive
Oh, down to the river we'd ride
    Then I got Mary pregnant
And man, that was all she wrote
    And for my nineteenth birthday
I got a union card and a wedding coat
We went down to the courthouse
And the judge put it all to rest
No wedding day smiles, no walk down the aisle
    No flowers, no wedding dress
That night we went down to the river
And into the river we'd dive
Oh, down to the river we did ride
    Yeah, yeah
I got a job working construction
    For the Johnstown Company
But lately there ain't been much work
    On account of the economy
Now all them things that seemed so important
Well mister they vanished right into the air
Now I just act like I don't remember
Mary acts like she don't care
But I remember us riding in my brother's car
Her body tan and wet, down at the reservoir
At night on them banks I'd lie awake
And pull her close just to feel each breath she'd take
Now those memories come back to haunt me
They haunt me like a curse
Is a dream a lie if it don't come true
    Or is it something worse
That sends me down to the river
Though I know the river is dry
That sends me down to the river tonight
    Down to the river
    My baby and I
Oh, down to the river we ride-ide

And here’s my other as I can’t decide between them.

The ragamuffin gunner is returnin' home
    Like a hungry runaway
He walks through town all alone
"He must be from the fort"
He hears the high school girls say
    His countryside's burnin'
With wolfman fairies dressed in drag for homicide
    The hit-and-run plead sanctuary
'Neath a holy stone they hide
    They're breakin' beams and crosses
    With a spastic's reelin' perfection
Nuns run bald through Vatican halls
    Pregnant, pleadin' immaculate conception
And everybody's wrecked on Main Street
    From drinking unholy blood
Sticker smiles sweet as Gunner breathes deep
    His ankles caked in mud
And I said, "Hey, gunner man, that's quicksand
    That's quicksand, that ain't mud
Have you thrown your senses to the war
Or did you lose them in the flood?"
That pure American brother, dull-eyed and empty-faced
Races Sundays in Jersey in a Chevy stock super eight
He rides 'er low on the hip
On the side he's got "Bound for Glory"
In red, white and blue flash paint
He leans on the hood telling racing stories
The kids call him Jimmy the Saint
    Well, that blaze-and-noise boy
He's gunnin' that bitch loaded to blastin' point
He rides head first into a hurricane and disappears into a point
    And there's nothin' left
But some blood where the body fell
That is, nothin' left that you could sell
Just junk all across the horizon
    A real highwayman's farewell
And I said, "Hey kid, you think that's oil?
Man, that ain't oil, that's blood"
I wonder what he was thinking
    When he hit that storm
Or was he just lost in the flood?
Eighth Avenue sailors in satin shirts whisper in the air
    Some storefront incarnation of Maria
She's puttin' on me the stare
    And Bronx's best apostle
Stands with his hand on his own hardware
Everything stops, you hear five quick shots
The cops come up for air
And now the whiz-bang gang from uptown
    They're shootin' up the street
Oh, that cat from the Bronx starts lettin' loose
But he gets blown right off his feet
Oh, and some kid comes blastin' 'round the corner
But a cop puts him right away
He lays on the street holding his leg
    Screaming something in Spanish
Still breathing when I walked away
And someone said, "Hey man, did you see that?
His body hit the street with such a beautiful thud"
I wonder what the dude was sayin'
Or was he just lost in the flood?
Hey man, did you see that?
Those poor cats are sure messed up
I wonder what they were gettin' into
Or were they all just lost in the flood?

And who could forget Pink Floyd's Time.

Ticking away the moments that make up a dull day
You fritter and waste the hours in an offhand way
Kicking around on a piece of ground in your home town
Waiting for someone or something to show you the way

Tired of lying in the sunshine
Staying home to watch the rain
And you are young and life is long
And there is time to kill today
And then one day you find
Ten years have got behind you
No one told you when to run
    You missed the starting gun

And you run, and you run to catch up with the sun, but it's sinking
Racing around to come up behind you again
The sun is the same in a relative way, but you're older
Shorter of breath and one day closer to death

    Every year is getting shorter
Never seem to find the time
Plans that either come to naught
Or half a page of scribbled lines
Hanging on in quiet desperation is the English way
    The time is gone
    The song is over
Thought I'd something more to say

    Home, home again
I like to be here when I can
When I come home cold and tired
It's good to warm my bones beside the fire
    Far away across the field
The tolling of the iron bell
Calls the faithful to their knees
To hear the softly spoken magic spells

Streets of London - Ralph McTell - one of the saddest songs I ever heard.

With God on Our Side - Bob Dylan - one of the most powerful anti war songs I ever heard.

I won't post the lyrics as they're best listened to. (both videos show the lyrics)

Started out with nothing. Still have most of it left.

They bring you up to do like your daddy done
Me and Mary we met in high school
    Great Song but I think

The screen door slams, Mary's dress sways
Like a vision she dances across the porch as the radio plays
Roy Orbison's singing for the lonely
Hey, that's me and I want you only
    Don't turn me home again
I just can't face myself alone again
    Don't run back inside, darling
You know just what I'm here for
So you're scared and you're thinking
That maybe we ain't that young anymore
Show a little faith, there's magic in the night
You ain't a beauty, but hey, you're alright
Oh, and that's alright with me
You can hide 'neath your covers and study your pain
Make crosses from your lovers, throw roses in the rain
Waste your summer praying in vain
For a savior to rise from these streets
Well now, I'm no hero, that's understood
All the redemption I can offer, girl, is beneath this dirty hood
With a chance to make it good somehow
Hey, what else can we do now?
    Except roll down the window
And let the wind blow back your hair
    Well, the night's busting open
These two lanes will take us anywhere
We got one last chance to make it real
To trade in these wings on some wheels
Climb in back, heaven's waiting down on the tracks
    Oh, come take my hand
We're riding out tonight to case the promised land
Oh, Thunder Road, oh, Thunder Road
    Oh, Thunder Road
Lying out there like a killer in the sun
Hey, I know it's late, we can make it if we run
    Oh, Thunder Road, sit tight
    Take hold, Thunder Road
Well, I got this guitar and I've learned how to make it talk
And my car's out back if you're ready to take that long walk
From your front porch to my front seat
The door's open but the ride ain't free
And I know you're lonely for words that I ain't spoken
Tonight we'll be free, all the promises will be broken
There were ghosts in the eyes of all the boys you sent away
They haunt this dusty beach road
In the skeleton frames of burned out Chevrolets
They scream your name at night in the street
Your graduation gown lies in rags at their feet
And in the lonely cool before dawn
You hear their engines roaring on
When you get to the porch they're gone on the wind
    So Mary, climb in
It's a town full of losers
I'm pulling out of here to win

    Just pips it

There's a video (link below) on YouTube of him doing a short set for Paste Magazine. Streetlights, Alabama Pines, Goddamn Lonely Love, Daisy Mae and a couple of others. Each song is a roller coaster. Alabama Pines made me long for Alabama and I've never been there!
The man is a songwriting legend.

Several examples on Rain Dogs, but this one always makes me smile.

    Uncle Vernon, Uncle Vernon
Independent as a hog on ice
He's a big shot down there at the slaughterhouse
He plays accordion for Mr. Weiss

    Uncle Biltmore and Uncle William
Made a million during World War II
But they're tightwads and they're cheapskates
And they'll never give a dime to you

    Auntie Mame has gone insane
She lives in the doorway of an old hotel
And the radio is playing opera
All she ever says is "go to Hell"

Uncle Violet flew as a pilot
And there ain't no pretty girls in France
Now he runs a tidy little bookie joint
They say he never keeps it in his pants

Uncle Bill will never leave a will
And the tumor is as big as an egg
He has a mistress, she's Puerto Rican
And I heard she has a wooden leg

Uncle Phil can't live without his pills
He has emphysema and he's almost blind
And we must find out where the money is
Get it now before he loses his mind

    Cemetery Polka, Tom Waits

I'll sing it one last time for you
Then we really have to go
You've been the only thing that's right
    In all I've done

And I can barely look at you
But every single time I do
I know we'll make it anywhere
    Away from here

    Light up, light up
As if you have a choice
Even if you cannot hear my voice
I'll be right beside you, dear

    Louder, louder
And we'll run for our lives
I can hardly speak, I understand
Why you can't raise your voice to say

To think I might not see those eyes
Makes it so hard not to cry
And as we say our long goodbyes
    I nearly do, hmm, oh

    Light up, light up
As if you have a choice
Even if you cannot hear my voice
I'll be right beside you, dear, oh

    Louder, louder
And we'll run for our lives
I can hardly speak I understand
Why you can't raise your voice to say

    Light up, light up
As if you have a choice
Even if you cannot hear my voice
I'll be right beside you, dear

    Louder, louder
And we'll run for our lives
I can hardly speak, I understand
Why you can't raise your voice to say, ooh

I'm not doing whole songs, just favourite bits

    Simon and Garfunkel - America

"Kathy, I'm lost", I said, though I knew she was sleeping
I'm empty and aching and I don't know why

Pink Floyd - Wish You Were Here

So, so you think you can tell heaven from hell?
    Blue skies from pain?
Can you tell a green field from a cold steel rail?

    and

Did you exchange a walk on part in the war
For a lead role in a cage?

Oh, and I've always enjoyed the tour de force that is Eminem's The Real Slim Shady.

"My bum is on your lips, my bum is on your lips"
And if I'm lucky, you might just give it a little kiss
And that's the message that we deliver to little kids
And expect them not to know what a woman's clitoris is
Of course they're gonna know what intercourse is
By the time they hit fourth grade
They've got the Discovery Channel, don't they?

I am a dull and simple lad
    Cannot tell water from champagne
And I have never met the Queen
And I wish I could have all he has got

I wish I could be like David Watts
And when I lie on my pillow at night
I dream I could fight like David Watts
And lead the school team to victory
Take my exams and pass the lot

I wish I could be like David Watts
I wish I could be like David Watts
I wish I could like, like David Watts
I wish I could be like David Watts

He is the head boy at the school
He is the captain of the team
His is so gay and fancy free
And I wish I could have all he has got

I wish I could be like David Watts
And all the girls in the neighborhood
Try to go out with David Watts
The try their best but can't succeed
For he is of pure and noble breed

I wish I could be like David Watts
I wish I could be like David Watts
I wish I could be like David Watts
I wish I could be like David Watts

I wish I could be like
I wish I could be like
I wish I could be like
I wish I could be like

    David Watts
    David Watts
    David Watts
    Cheers,
    Neil.

This from Can You Forgive Her? by the Pet Shop Boys...

"...Remember when you were more easily led

Behind the cricket pavilion and the bicycle shed

Trembling as your dreams came true

You looked right into those blue eyes and knew

    It was love..."

I believe it's the only song written to have the term 'Cricket Pavilion' in the lyrics.

    I can take the mud
    I can take the slaughter
But I don't talk to Sun reporters

    or

And there's only two teams in this town
And you must follow one or the other
Let us win, let them lose
    Not the other way round
    In a northern industrial town

    or

    Call up the craftsmen
    Bring me the draughtsmen
Build me a path from cradle to grave
    And I'll give my consent
    To any government
That does not deny a man a living wage

Just three verses of Billy Bragg lyrics, picked almost at random.

First one that came to mind

May God bless and keep you always
May your wishes all come true
May you always do for others
And let others do for you
May you build a ladder to the stars
    And climb on every rung
    May you stay forever young
    Forever young, forever young
    May you stay forever young.

May you grow up to be righteous
May you grow up to be true
May you always know the truth
And see the light surrounding you
    May you always be courageous
    Stand upright and be strong
    May you stay forever young
    Forever young, forever young
    May you stay forever young.

May your hands always be busy
May your feet always be swift
May you have a strong foundation
When the winds of changes shift
May your heart always be joyful
And may your song always be sung
    May you stay forever young
    Forever young, forever young
    May you stay forever young.

The second was Woody Guthrie’s “Deportee”
'Against stupidity, the gods themselves struggle in vain' - Schiller.

    I liked the Philosophers' Song

Immanuel Kant was a real pissant
    Who was very rarely stable.
Heidegger, Heidegger was a boozy beggar
Who could think you under the table.
    David Hume could out-consume
    Wilhelm Freidrich Hegel,
And Wittgenstein was a beery swine
Who was just as schloshed as Schlegel.

There's nothing Nietzsche couldn't teach ya'
'Bout the raising of the wrist.
    SOCRATES, HIMSELF, WAS PERMANENTLY PISSED...

John Stuart Mill, of his own free will,
On half a pint of shandy was particularly ill.
    Plato, they say, could stick it away;
Half a crate of whiskey every day.
Aristotle, Aristotle was a bugger for the bottle,
Hobbes was fond of his dram,
And Rene Descartes was a drunken fart: "I drink, therefore I am"
    Yes, Socrates, himself, is particularly missed;
A lovely little thinker but a bugger when he's pissed!

when my mum was dying jagged guitar chords kept popping into my mind. only later did i realise it was jimi:

    I love my friends
    And they love me
    We're just as close
    As we can be
    And just because
    We really care
    Whatever we get
    We share!

    I got it from Agnes
    She got it from Jim
We all agree it must have been Louise who gave it to him
Now, she got if from Harry, who got it from Marie ·
And everybody knows that Marie ----
    Got it from me!
    Giles got it from Daphne
    She got it from Joan
Who picked it up in County Cork, a-kissin' the Blarney Stone
Pierre gave it to Sheila, who must have brought it there
He got it from Francois and Jacques, aha! ---
    Lucky Pierre!
    Max got it from Edith
    Who gets it every spring
She got it from her Daddy, who just gives her everything
She then gave it to Daniel, whose spaniel has it now
Our dentist even got it, and we're still ----
    Wondering how!
But I got it from Agnes
    Or maybr it was Sue
Or Millie or Billie or Gillie or Willie, it doesn't matter who
It might have been at the pub, or at the club, or in the loo
And if you will be my friend, then I might
    Mind you, I said "might"

    Give it to you
Don't just do something, sit there. - TNH

I wrote this song two hours before we met
I didn't know your name or what you looked like yet

I am sick and I am dull
    And I am plain
How dearly I'd love to get carried away
Oh, but dreams have a knack of just not coming true
And time is against me now

    And in the end
    The love you take
Is equal to the love you make

A Mark Knopfler masterpiece, delivered by Tina Turner...

Well, the men come in these places
And the men are all the same
You don't look at their faces
And you don't ask their names
You don't think of them as human
You don't think of them at all
You keep your mind on the money
Keeping your eyes on the wall

    I'm your private dancer
    A dancer for money
I'll do what you want me to do
    I'm your private dancer
    A dancer for money
And any old music will do

I wanna make a million dollars
I wanna live out by the sea
Have a husband and some children
    Yeah, I guess I want a family
All the men come in these places
And the men are all the same
You don't look at their faces
And you don't ask their names

    I'm your private dancer
    A dancer for money
I'll do what you want me to do
    I'm your private dancer
    A dancer for money
And any old music will do
    I'm your private dancer
    A dancer for money
I'll do what you want me to do
    Just a private dancer
    A dancer for money
And any old music will do

    Deutsche Marks or dollars
American Express will do nicely, thank you
Let me loosen up your collar
Tell me, do you wanna see me do the shimmy again?

    I'm your private dancer
    A dancer for money
Do what you want me to do
    Just a private dancer
    A dancer for money
And any old music will do

All the men come in these places
And the men are all the same
You don't look at their faces
And you don't ask their names
You don't think of them as human
You don't think of them at all
You keep your mind on the money
Keeping your eyes on the wall

    I'm your private dancer
    A dancer for money
I'll do what you want me to do
    I'm your private dancer
    A dancer for money
And any old music will do
    I'm your private dancer
    A dancer for money
I'll do what you want me to do
    I'm your private dancer
    A dancer for money
And any old music will do

I'm your private dancer, a dancer for money
I'm your private dancer, a dancer for money
I'm your private dancer, a dancer for money
Just a private dancer, a dancer for money
And when you can imagine yourself in the room with them all, such is the fantastic storytelling, thanks to Billy Joel...

    It's nine o'clock on a Saturday
    The regular crowd shuffles in
There's an old man sittin' next to me
Makin' love to his tonic and gin
He says, "Son, can you play me a memory?
I'm not really sure how it goes
But it's sad and it's sweet and I knew it complete
    When I wore a younger man's clothes"
    La, la-la, di-dee-da
    La-la, di-dee-da, da-dum
Sing us a song, you're the piano man
    Sing us a song tonight
Well, we're all in the mood for a melody
And you've got us feelin' alright
Now John at the bar is a friend of mine
He gets me my drinks for free
And he's quick with a joke or to light up your smoke
But there's some place that he'd rather be
He says, "Bill, I believe this is killing me"
As the smile ran away from his face
"Well, I'm sure that I could be a movie star
If I could get out of this place"
    Oh, la, la-la, di-dee-da
    La-la, di-dee-da, da-dum
Now Paul is a real estate novelist
Who never had time for a wife
And he's talkin' with Davy, who's still in the Navy
And probably will be for life
And the waitress is practicing politics
As the businessmen slowly get stoned
Yes, they're sharing a drink they call loneliness
But it's better than drinkin' alone
Sing us a song, you're the piano man
    Sing us a song tonight
Well, we're all in the mood for a melody
And you've got us feelin' alright
It's a pretty good crowd for a Saturday
And the manager gives me a smile
'Cause he knows that it's me they've been comin' to see
To forget about life for a while
And the piano, it sounds like a carnival
And the microphone smells like a beer
And they sit at the bar and put bread in my jar
And say, "Man, what are you doin' here?"
    Oh, la, la-la, di-dee-da
    La-la, di-dee-da, da-dum
Sing us a song, you're the piano man
    Sing us a song tonight
Well, we're all in the mood for a melody
And you've got us feelin' alright

Hey, that's me and I want you only
    Don't turn me home again
I just can't face myself alone again
    Don't run back inside, darling
You know just what I'm here for
So you're scared and you're thinking
That maybe we ain't that young anymore
Show a little faith, there's magic in the night
You ain't a beauty, but hey, you're alright
Oh, and that's alright with me
You can hide 'neath your covers and study your pain
Make crosses from your lovers, throw roses in the rain
Waste your summer praying in vain
For a savior to rise from these streets
Well now, I'm no hero, that's understood
All the redemption I can offer, girl, is beneath this dirty hood
With a chance to make it good somehow
Hey, what else can we do now?
    Except roll down the window
And let the wind blow back your hair
    Well, the night's busting open
These two lanes will take us anywhere
We got one last chance to make it real
To trade in these wings on some wheels
Climb in back, heaven's waiting down on the tracks
    Oh, come take my hand
We're riding out tonight to case the promised land
Oh, Thunder Road, oh, Thunder Road
    Oh, Thunder Road
Lying out there like a killer in the sun
Hey, I know it's late, we can make it if we run
    Oh, Thunder Road, sit tight
    Take hold, Thunder Road
Well, I got this guitar and I've learned how to make it talk
And my car's out back if you're ready to take that long walk
From your front porch to my front seat
The door's open but the ride ain't free
And I know you're lonely for words that I ain't spoken
Tonight we'll be free, all the promises will be broken
There were ghosts in the eyes of all the boys you sent away
They haunt this dusty beach road
In the skeleton frames of burned out Chevrolets
They scream your name at night in the street
Your graduation gown lies in rags at their feet
And in the lonely cool before dawn
You hear their engines roaring on
When you get to the porch they're gone on the wind
    So Mary, climb in
It's a town full of losers
I'm pulling out of here to win

    Just pips it
    Beat me to it

So many great songs. Some that always stick in my mind.

    Brothers in Arms -

    Through these fields of destruction

    Baptisms of fire
    I've witnessed your suffering
    As the battle raged high
And though they did hurt me so bad
    In the fear and alarm
    You did not desert me
    My brothers in arms

Ohio - CSNY Re Kent State. Such a powerful message especially in the context of it's time.

    Tin soldiers and Nixon coming
    We're finally on our own
This summer I hear the drumming
    Four dead in Ohio
Gotta get down to it, soldiers are cutting us down
Should have been gone long ago
What if you knew her and found her dead on the ground
How can you run when you know?

One that I'm listening to a lot from his new album:

    Eternal Lullaby - Myles Kennedy

    Did you lose your way?
Were you down on your luck?
Was your last nerve spent before you closed the door?
    One big mistake
I guess that I will never know
Fell on black days now you're gone forevermore
    Beyond the ache
    The here and now
    One last refrain
    Is ringing out
    It carries on
Know your song will never die
    Like an offering of love
    A sacred rite
    You'll carry on
A million hearts will beat in time
    To an aching melody
    That will survive
    An eternal lullaby
I can't pretend what you did didn't hurt
No I can't pretend it doesn't break my heart
Your true intent in the end we'll never know
But we piece together what was torn apart
    What's done is done
    So let it be
    Let solace come
    Through a melody
    It carries on
So your song will never die
    Like an offering of love
    A sacred rite
    You'll carry on
A million hearts will beat in time
    To an aching melody
    That will survive
    And here we are
    Torn apart
They say that time can mend a broken heart
    My shooting star
    You left your mark
    But the question still remains
Tell me why you chose to leave us in the dark?
    It carries on
So your song will never die
    Like an offering of love
    A sacred rite
    You'll carry on
A million hearts will beat in time
    To an aching melody
    That will survive
    An eternal lullaby
    An eternal lullaby
    An eternal lullaby
    An eternal lullaby
    Did you lose your way?
Were you down on your luck?
Was your last nerve spent before you closed the door?

    Here's a little song I wrote
You might want to sing it note for note
    Don't worry, be happy
In every life we have some trouble
When you worry you make it double
    Don't worry, be happy
    Don't worry, be happy now

Ooh, ooh ooh ooh oo-ooh ooh oo-ooh ooh ooh oo-ooh
    (Don't worry)
    Ooh oo-ooh ooh ooh oo-ooh
    (Be happy)
    Ooh oo-ooh oo-ooh
    (Don't worry, be happy)
Ooh, ooh ooh ooh oo-ooh ooh oo-ooh ooh ooh oo-ooh
    (Don't worry)
    Ooh oo-ooh ooh ooh oo-ooh
    (Be happy)
    Ooh oo-ooh oo-ooh
    (Don't worry, be happy)

Ain't got no place to lay your head
Somebody came and took your bed
    Don't worry, be happy
The landlord say your rent is late
    He may have to litigate
    Don't worry, be happy
    (Look at me I'm happy)

Ooh, ooh ooh ooh oo-ooh ooh oo-ooh ooh ooh oo-ooh
    (Don't worry)
    Ooh oo-ooh ooh ooh oo-ooh
    (Be Happy)
    Ooh oo-ooh oo-ooh
Here I give you my phone number
When you worry call me, I make you happy
Ooh, ooh ooh ooh oo-ooh ooh oo-ooh ooh ooh oo-ooh
    (Don't worry)
    Ooh oo-ooh ooh ooh oo-ooh
    (Be happy)
    Ooh oo-ooh oo-ooh

Ain't got no cash, ain't got no style
Ain't got no gal to make you smile
    But don't worry, be happy
'Cause when you worry your face will frown
And that will bring everybody down
    So don't worry, be happy
    Don't worry, be happy now

Ooh, ooh ooh ooh oo-ooh ooh oo-ooh ooh ooh oo-ooh
    (Don't worry)
    Ooh oo-ooh ooh ooh oo-ooh
    (Be happy)
    Ooh oo-ooh oo-ooh
    Don't worry, be happy
Ooh, ooh ooh ooh oo-ooh ooh oo-ooh ooh ooh oo-ooh
    (Don't worry)
    Ooh oo-ooh ooh ooh oo-ooh
    (Be happy)
    Ooh oo-ooh oo-ooh
    Don't worry, be happy

Now there, is this song I wrote
I hope you learned it note for note
    Like good little children
    Don't worry, be happy
    Listen to what I say
In your life expect some trouble
When you worry you make it double
Don't worry, be happy, be happy now

Ooh, ooh ooh ooh oo-ooh ooh oo-ooh ooh ooh oo-ooh
    (Don't worry)
    Ooh oo-ooh ooh ooh oo-ooh
    (Be happy)
    Ooh oo-ooh oo-ooh
    Don't worry, be happy
Ooh, ooh ooh ooh oo-ooh ooh oo-ooh ooh ooh oo-ooh
    (Don't worry)
    Ooh oo-ooh ooh ooh oo-ooh
    (Be happy)
    Ooh oo-ooh oo-ooh
    Don't worry, be happy

Ooh, ooh ooh ooh oo-ooh ooh oo-ooh ooh ooh oo-ooh
    (Don't worry)
    Ooh oo-ooh ooh ooh oo-ooh
(Don't worry, don't worry, don't do it, be happy)
    Ooh oo-ooh oo-ooh
(Put a smile on your face, don't bring everybody down like this)
Ooh, ooh ooh ooh oo-ooh ooh oo-ooh ooh ooh oo-ooh
    (Don't worry)
    Ooh oo-ooh ooh ooh oo-ooh
(It will soon pass, whatever it is)
    Ooh oo-ooh oo-ooh
    Don't worry, be happy
    Ooh oo-ooh oo-ooh
    I'm not worried, I'm happy
