When removing the pins, you typically want to push them out in the direction that allows the collar to come out easily. If you notice the collar is on one side, that’s usually the side you want to work from.
I have a watch incoming in the next few days (42mm Panerai).
Whilst I’ve owned Panerai on bracelets before, they’ve all been screw links. Unfortunately, my watch is from a time (2019) when, in Panerai’s infinite wisdom, they reverted to non-screw links.
I presume they’ve used pin and collar, but:
- there’s no direction arrow on the reverse side of the links; and
- there are two pins per link.
This means I’m unsure which of the two pins to remove when removing a link (does it even matter?), plus I’m unsure in which direction to remove the pins.
Presumably I’m missing something obvious but I’d very much appreciate if someone could educate me accordingly.
Thank you.
(Random internet photo - similar to but not my actual incoming watch)

Makes sense - thanks.
I’ve never owned a watch with a pin and collar bracelet. Are you saying I should be able to see which side of the bracelet has the collar… i.e. one side should have a solid pin “head” and the other side a smaller pin ‘head’ with some form of ring (i.e. the collar) around it?
No, with a standard pin and collar link, the collar sits in the middle link so I’m not entirely sure what the previous poster means about working out a better side…you won’t be able to see the collar until the bracelet is split. Unless this is some Panerai specific bracelet thing? I’ve never handled a Panerai so can only speak about normal pin and collar.
If there are no arrows, then you should be able to go out/back in any direction. I’d probably choose to hammer the pin out one way then insert it back in reverse.

Updating in case this may help others in the future.
The watch in question is a 42mm Panerai 722 (PAM00722), which takes a narrower bracelet versus its 44mm counterparts… 22mm at the lugs tapering to 20mm.
- pins are 18mm x 1mm (caveat: measured by my very cheap calipers).
- collar sits in the middle part of the link; the diameter of the hole in the middle part of the link is larger than that of the outer parts of the link, so the collar stays put centrally.
- the pin can be removed or inserted from either side.
- the process of removal and insertion is straightforward and not particularly fiddly; whilst I would encourage the use of a link removal tool, in a pinch a ‘DIY style’ method would work.
Nice one, did you manage to size and get a good fit?
Pics welcomed, see the Panerai appreciation thread.
Bracelet style sounds similar to one I got recently, collar sits in the middle and has a slight kink in the middle to bite the pin.
I guess if you have had Panerai before you may have a strap or two and the bracelet may not stay on for long
